Obviously if you're reading this now, then by the time you get around to posting the last thing you've read is going to be a forums post, but I'm thinking more along the lines of books, articles, short stories, comics, etc. If the last thing you read was somewhere on the internet, post a link so that interested people can read it too!

The last thing I read was this article (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-world/20100524/EU.Britain.Autism.Doctor/) about the crazy autism/vaccines doctor finally losing his license.

It's a graphic novelization of Franz Kafka stories that's a lot of fun (can be found on Amazon, but their images from inside the book don't show you much so I'm linking to Google Books). I had previously read Kuper's graphic novel for the Metamorphosis, which is what got me interested in this.

I got a chance to watch the youtube video of this you linked to me this morning, it was pretty neat!

The last thing I read was issues 1-5 of Joe the Barbarian. It is imaginative and wonderful and the art is spectacular.

It's not finished yet, but I'm happy to send the issues out so far to anyone who is interested. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes reading adventure comics and doesn't mind a little weirdness. Gonna try and get to my nearest comic shop later this week and buy some actual issues of it too, I want to make sure this sells well enough to get a trade.

Finished Regulators. Didn't end the way I remembered it ending, tbh. The appendix to the last chapter is the same, though, so it must just be my faulty memory.

Star Wars Omnibus Menace Revealed

Takes place between ep. I & II and like most prequel books I've read, while not bad the stories aren't all that captivating and the characters are rather bland. The Aura Sing parts being the most interesting and but make be angry at the CGI Clone Wars series for making her weaker than she is. The artwork for the Jango Fett Story is very good, sort of a realistic caricature of the "live action' stuff. The last 20 or so pages where lame, I thing they're just toy adds or something becasue they all end with "With the new Republic Gunship and force FX lightsaber, the possibilities are endless! The force is in your hands!

Not bad but wouldn't recommend it.

The Problem With Colorblindness (http://www.racebending.com/v3/background/the-problem-with-colorblindness/)

Leonard Nimoy screens Star Trek IV, talks about his career, all things Trek! (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/45445)

- Nimoy ragged on Michael Bay following up a comment about great effects still need a great story. “I can say that because Michael Bay is my wife’s cousin! But he’s never invited me to be in any of his projects! I sat by the phone night and day, but Michael Bay never called me!”

- Sometime in the late‘60s, Nimoy was in Cleveland at a restaurant in a private room. Someone came up to him and said, “Jimi Hendrix is in the restaurant. He heard you were here and wanted to know if it was okay if he came in and said hello.” He said of course and there’s a photograph that exists of him with Hendrix from that night.

Nimoy stuff is neato. I saw him at a Trek con when I was really little.

Scp, is that a Sackboy thing?

I read Star Trek Countdown which takes before the Abrams Trek movie.

In it The destruction of Romulus is even more tragic because Spock's reunification deal actually worked out and the Romulan culture began to open up so much that Spock was a legal resident and the ambassador of the Federation. He brought the whole star going nova deal up with the Romulan counsel and stated the only way to prevent this cataclysm was if Vulcan & Romulus pooled their tech together so as to collapse the explosion. Well both Vulcans and romulans refused to let any of their secret tech fall into the hands of the other side so Spock along with Nero who was at the system when the start first began blowing up set out to mine enough of the stuff to make the red matter to use with the vulcan's device.

Along the way the ran into the Enterprise who Data is now the captain of with Picard now the ambassador to Vulcan. The romulan grand poobahs did the math and decided that Spock was right and began evac all too late. Nero went back home to ad in evacuations while Spock promised him that he'd do everything to save both their worlds. Nero returned in time to see Romulus blown up. Data and Picard called up Geordi who had retired from starfleet to design and build his own starships, one of which being the squid thing that Spock was going to use to collapse the super nova. Meanwhile Nero found the Romulan leading party adrift in space and brought then aboard to kill them himself. (that staff he has in the movie was the tribal spear thing of the Romulans so it's not just a poker for poker's sake) and using their starmaps found the secret romulan starbase where the Narada was outfitted with experimental thinking Romulan/Borg nanotechnology which can repair itself as well as upgrade and augment it's abilities according to it's use and environment. Using this Nero attacked Fedi, Klingon, & Cardassian territories until Worf lead a fleet to subdue him. All but 1 of Worf's ships was destroyed and he was ordered to surrender so naturally, Worf just flew to the Neruda's hull in a shuttle and cut his way first in then through Nero's men. Worf battled his way the the bridge where Nero had a tentacle thing impale Worf through back. The Enterprise having Spock's ship and the red matter joined the Klingons in fighting the Nerada and when asked to surrender and lower their shields did so, beamed Worf aboard, and got away with intermediate damage.

And so Spock set off with the red matter, fully realizing that this was a 1 way trip and his final act for all of his people, Vulcan, Human & Romulan.

Then the movie stuff happened.

Neon Genesis Evangelion vol. 3

I had no intrest in reading these when I heard that Sadamoto changed the Asuka/Rei/Shinji dynamic plus that fact that he doesn't know how to end it.
But now that I don't have to pay or read them online I don't mind some light reading.

Seeing as how Sadamoto also did the artwork for the show it's like getting a comic that looks just like the cartoon. And already this early on I get naked Misato bottom & Rei boobies <3

They gave Toji that gruff Osokan/Broklyn/southern dialect and I can't welp but read him with Meoth's voice & Kensuke with Scooter's.

I don't think of Year One as being all that short since The Long Halloween and Dark Victory pretty much follow up on them. I know Miller didn't write them, but still. There are so many great early Batman career stories out there in general, really. Lately I have been all about Batman: Gothic.

The last thing I read was a book I bought because it was a dollar called Like Being Killed. It was kind of annoyingly written and a lot of the characterization was inconsistent, but I barely ever read novels anymore so I am glad I read it all the same.

Someday I will read the Harry Potter books. It's on my list.

The Plague touches on some of the same themes - particularly, of course, the notion of the absurd - but in quite a different manner to The Stranger. Not sure if it's 'better' (it's bloody stupid trying to assess that anyway a lot of the time, I think) but I'd definitely recommend it! There's also a nice reference to The Stranger in the novel which made me smile.

Anyway, in the interim I read The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi, which was pretty good, and I'm currently halfway through Gabriel Garcia Mrquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. I'm trying this summer to read a lot more novels, having read about 3 in the past 9 months.

The Philosopher and the Wolf by Mark Rowlands. A book about wolves and people and more besides. It's an excellent memoir - funny and moving - but more than that it's a good work of philosophy, challenging commonplace attitudes to humanity, animals, death, the primacy of happiness etc. Pretty easy to read as well, so, basically, get hold of a copy. It might not change your life but it could well change your mind.

I can't really say without giving you massive spoilers. I'm a great fan of King's early work, and loved the idea of him doing fantasy in the Dark Tower series.

His ability to characterise is almost unsurpassed in his genre, but there are things in the later DT books that just don't work. There is a Deux ex Machina that I'd think most people will either classify as pure genius or the pinnacle of ridiculous plot devices. I went for the latter. Anyone that has read them all will know what I mean.

I will say the very ending of the whole series was interesting; I wasn't expecting it.

Also... I'm going to spoiler this in case you don't want to read it, it IS a spoiler:

He attempted to do what Asimov attempted decades before which was to merge characters from other books and make it plausable. It kind of works but kind of not. I know, that sounds weird but its how I felt.

If you want to get more into it after you're read them all get in touch then. :)

Carrie was more of a tragedy than a horror movie. Sorta like a realistic X-men story.

Personally any series that can survive and retain any measure of interest after a fifth book is worthy of some accolade. The Dark Tower certainly held mine till the end though it was a diminishing parabola of interest only repeaking with the final book. At least it didnt go the way of robert jordan poor sod.

Reread Roger Zelazny's chronicles of amber. very intriguing novel

Dr Faustus

I think you can read Carrie in many ways. As a tragedy like Tom says of the movie, as a traditional suburban horror, as an emotionally charged metphor for puberty and repressed sexual awakenings, even as an (admittedly warped) parable.

From a literary perspective it obviously tends to favour a feminist analysis but it's possible to undertake a structuralist reading, or a psychoanalytic reading, or even a formalist one; that's the beauty of it. And all in less than 250 pages.

Nowadays King churns out phone book sized novels that still have a literary value but his editor needs a lesson in brutality; cut some of that crap out and make it more immediate.

That's my rant over. Back to topic. :)

lol a bookclub-esque intellectual discourse in a fantasy forum. nice rant:)

Still, some of that 'crap' enables the structured world building in novels. i mean the dark tower series wouldnt be as engaging if King went vegetarian and pruned off much of the unnecessary backstory and went straight to the tower in one book.

Back to stuff recently read

I read geralds game both in german AND in english, I do not know why but it was better in english :D

Yes, I liked it too!

What a pity you do not like his son's work, I appreciate this a lot too, it "rounds" the picture for me. (does one say that in english as well?)

I much prefer Dune to 'lord of the rings', although I adore the movies.

I admit I love the 1984 movie (dune) as well.

And yes, all six books, I am fascinated by the the way he narration changes with the changing of the worm, the different meaning of time, understanding of the universe, I have read those in german though.

More than once. I understand what mnakes it difficult for some people to read the last 3 books, they are different but no less fantastic....

Dr Faustus
07-31-2010, 05:05 PM
I appreciated what his son tried to do but he didn't have the intricacies that Frank had, or the ability to stir the emotions. For me, anyhow.

"The God Makers" is similar in places; it's by Frank. It has many parallels with the socio-political and religious aspects of Dune.

I didn't know you were german. I read Herman Hesse some years back, though it was in translation into English, but it was astonishing. "Steppenwulf" it was called. He did simply amazing things with the narrative and the "person"... you know first person, third person? I hope you know what I mean.

On topic:

I finished the 6th in the Lucifer series of collected editions today. There were 11 in all, by Mike Carey. I'm missing 2 though. :(

sorei

I know Hesse is good. Sadly we were tortured with hesse at school, I never found my way back to him, when i am in the right modd I like Bert Brecht, Max Frisch though.
[And yes, don't worry, I know what you mean. :) ]

Besides Sci Fi and Thrillers ;)

I haven't read much of Herbert besides Dune.

My father left me his sci fi 'library' of 700 pocket books, many 'old' ones, Heinlein, Darlton, Sheer, and others, I grew up with sci fi books.

I have read and loved 'a planet called treason' by Orson Scott Card, even heinlein 'stranger in strange world' (afterwards learning about discussions), and Darlton "der Sprung ins Jenseits" (german title, sorry, no english title included in the book) ->dealing with reincarnation

and an amazing book by one the early and rare women in the genre : Maria Szepes.
In german it was called 'der rote Lwe', again dealing with reincarnation, I was stunned she seems to have written this in 40ties....

I do not expect Brian to be Herbert. It is impossible to do a Frank herbert-Dune, I guess, but - for my taste - Brian did a piece that goes well along with THE 'Dune'....

Wasn't that edited primarily by his (anti-Semitic, proto-Nazi) sister?

Thus Spoke Zarathustra is pretty good (but avoid the Thomas Common translation). It's an overview of the philosophy he advocated in his later works - the ubermensch, the will-to-power, eternal recurrence et al - which is also a pretty good piece of literature. Nietzsche is not someone whose philosophy I always agree with, perhaps in part because it can so easily be distorted into something horrible, but his strong affirmation of life is something that I admire greatly.

Sorry! I didn't see this until now.

I don't see any homosexual context behind it, at all. To me, it was more concentrated on morality ... but, I can't even begin to discuss the plot of it now. I was so concentrated in Heart of Darkness that I barely remember the significant points of The Secret Sharer. During my winter break, I plan on reading both of those stories over (just because I am on a mission to really get Conrad) and I'll probably end up PMing you to discuss it further.

Last book read: The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford. Fascinating read. The beginning was a bit slow and it didn't really peak my interest until 1/3rd of the way through. However, the manner in which it is written, in a non-linear way, made it quite interesting to read. You sort of had to follow when the protagonist was talking about the past or the present. So, essentially, he was telling you the story in a conversational manner. Which is easy enough to follow after awhile because I feel it follows the natural flow of conversation. Has anyone read it? I'm dying to discuss it - outside of the classroom setting.

I asked Junot Diaz about this topic, since so much of Oscar Wao is explained by the narrator instead of done in-scene. His comment was "But it's showy telling," which I think is smarter than he meant it to be. If tension is present, then the information is going to have an impact. The trick is to maintain the tension through the explanation, and that requires knowing when a reader is going to want a piece of information, withholding it from them, and then delivering it at another time when it's still relevant. Tough thing to do because you have to lead up to the revelation as well.

Solaris

When did you get to see Junot Diaz? He was speaking in one of the colleges here in NYC and I missed him :(

Last book read was The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West. Short read with quite the interesting plot. A lot of it could be related back to Ford's telling of The Good Soldier[I], but I wouldn't compare this [nearly] linear novel to Ford's ... memory mess, is all I can call it, for lack of better words.

He spoke in either 2008 or 2009 at my program, then had a Q&A with the MFAs, which is when I asked him. I remember he never took his hand off his right cheek, like it was glued there. When someone would ask him a question, he'd stand still with his eyes closed and his hand covering half his face, speaking in a dreamy, quiet voice. It was odd, but kinda relaxing. And he was very humble.

One of the other smart things he said was about the writer's relationship to his/her subconscious. He said it's like riding a horse. The horse is separate from you with its own will. But through daily practice it will work with you, and surprise you sometimes.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't want to hold on to any frustration and disappointment for Mr. Lucas any longer. He could make a thousand more Star Wars films, each more terrible than the last, and they wouldn't do anything to diminish the feeling inside my chest that wells up when I see an AT-AT stepping out of a Hoth blizzard or hear the sound of a lightsaber being brought to bear.

James Joyce is such a difficult author to read! The novel was incredibly interesting and beautifully written. There was a lot of depth and a lot to analyze. We read an excerpt of Finnegans Wake and it seems that towards the end of his life Joyce was absolutely losing his mind! He certainly is an interesting man, I find him to be quite brilliant. But in all honesty, Portrait is another book I have to pick up at some other time and reread to truly understand it. I have to be in a certain mood to read this modernist novels! They are so detached from everything and take you down so many different paths to lead you to a conclusion...I'm not ready for them! I feel its perhaps because I am in a juncture in my life where I want the answers in my face and everything straightforward. A modernist novel just doesn't do that for you.

It isn't so much not having anything to read as it is not being able to read it as well as I need.
I think that would be a great idea ndi, Start it on Jan. 1 and see how well we all do. I'd have to be a somewhat informal contest seeing as how the only real way so judge who's faster and better-er is if we read the exact same books in the same order and test how much we remember from what we read and that's just too much work.

I actually didn't do that, it was a refrance to an episode of south park where the boys have to write essays on The Old Man and the Sea. With zero time to accomplish this they wire Mexican day ladorers at home depot to "Read the book and write an essay" which they do by first reading the book ("There's an old man and me goes to the sea to catch the feesh, but he no catch feesh, then me catch feesh but then feesh get away.") and write a letter to their essays.
