Now I have a question for the more program savvy people, is it really that difficult to create a town in these HD games? If there were to be a remake of Final fantasy 7 ('if' is the key word) how long would it take to work on a town with interesting NPCs as well as the towns attractions?

I say it will take a very long time. FFVII (though pre-rendered) towns and everything looked beautiful and detailed.

There ARE towns in XIII. I think they shot themselves in the foot by saying that there aren't.

You just happen to run through them, not hang out and shop. That works for the story, though. You're playing FUGITIVES.

SQUARE ENIX has stated that the reason there will be no FF 7 remake and that there were no towns in FF 13 was because of the "difficulty of working in such a demanding graphical environment & Considering the amount of work to make graphics that deserve HD, it is hard to make towns in the conventional style."

Anyone else not buying this? Seriously there have been other older HD RPG's with towns Oblivion, Dragon Age, WNK. Granted Dragon Ages graphics were crap but that was largely due to the bad engine they took 4 years to make for it, if they had of used the UR engine like in Mass Effect 2 it would of been better.

HD games have been out for how long and now they're basically saying it's HD graphs that's killing towns in RPG's. So in a way they're saying HD killed RPGs and that's why FF 13 was so liner and had no towns...............................yeah OK.

I honestly don't think they're problem lies with creating graphics for HD (or room if were talking Blu Ray here.) It sounds like they're trying to use the whole "HD Graphics and towns are too hard for us" as a scapegoat. If they weren't so hell sell bent on trying to pass a movie for a game they could easily come out with another gem like FF 7.

FF 7 was actually an evolution towards western RPGs with choices how certain things play out, dialogue choices, romance mini games, mini games, optional battles, optional characters, more freedom for sidequests, exec, and since then they have been developing from it. Why who knows, I honestly think they just don't want to do it and are making excuses.

It seems like square-enix just can't be bothered. They took the easy way out to make money faster :/ Although FF Versus XIII must have towns if it has a world map right?.... I want a remake personally but I doubt they will put the effort in.

And no XIII did not have towns it simply had the same corridor that is used throughout it's 13 chapters but changed the wallpaper....

it's not an issue of it being "hard" it's more an issue of time and money. since it takes more time and money to do that sort of thing, they either need to 1) sell more copies of the game or 2) cut other things from the game to save money.

the former isn't easy to control and the latter is something that isn't probably justifiable to them.

These factors are a big part of why I'm dissatisfied with the way the FF series has been going recently. The old campy style of going from town to town is a major part of the charm of these games, and improving the graphics contributes absolutely nothing to the enjoyment of the game outside of a fleeting "whoa, pretty lights" factor. How much I would love to have a new FF game of the old style!

Dragon Age was released in October of last year, and Oblivion over 5 years ago, so the two shouldn't be compared to each other. You may've hated the graphics of DA, but to me graphics aren't the end all-be all for a game.

True, FFVII had a heap of extras to it... but people going on about wanting a remake or comparing recent games with FFVII (which was released 13 years ago) is pure fanboy swelling.

Wanting a remake is not fanboy swelling. It's just wanting a remake to a game you like. I really hate this attitude that if you like FFVII then you are a fanboy. It's childish and pathetic. Personally I do want to see a remake, not because I think it is the best game ever or anything like that, although I do really enjoy it, ut because I would like to see more things added to it. Hunts for example, more side-quests, more materia, a graphical upgrade. It's just things like that that would increase the enjoyment of the game.

No it is fanboy swelling. The incessant amount of people who think FFVII is the greatest game ever, to the point of excluding all other gamers and flaming others, all the while stating how great and 100% perfect FFVII is. I'm not saying that you fit into that category Harkus, but there are a lot of others who DO fit the bill. Do I hate FFVII? No, I think it's a good game but doesn't really deserve all this hype about it, nor wishes for a remake. However, considering as SE hasn't really made anything groundbreaking etc in the last few years, FFVII remake rumors are the only thing keeping SE fresh in a lot of people's minds who think it's the best, perfect game ever made and nothing else comes close to their idea of gaming perfection, which in my mind there is no such thing as a universally accepted, 100% perfect game.

Myself, I don't want a remake of FFVII. Updated graphics? Pssh... that's overrated. More side-quests? Doesn't need them. Hunts? Why? That's not really applicable for the world of FFVII imo. More Materia? There are a few more materia in the game, available if you have a Action Replay/Gameshark/Jenova (Cheat program for PC version, works similar to the other two).

FFVII should remain as it is, not be remade. All the people crying out for a remake, leave it alone and get over it. It's just a game, not the coming of Gaming Nirvana which some people think it is. It IS a good game, not a great game and most certainly not the greatest game ever made!!
