In the general sense, think they will mostly stay as they are,(mostly).....while games may get worse, there wil still be enough good games now and then to redeem the genre,or they may get better, but become more mainstream, resulting in some less desirable games, that's what I think.

Who knows, depends on how driven and experienced the development teams are in the future.

As long as there is imagination, and as long as there are good writers to create substantial plots, then the RPG genre will continue to prosper. Look at Morrowind, Dungeon Siege and Neverwinter Nights. Three different RPGs, but all have prospered with different fans, and that's just on the PC.

Graphics will continue to evolve as the storage medium of DVDs and the future grows, and as hardware grows faster. So we could start seeing even more realistic looking RPGs. The basic gameplay will remain the same, with tweaks and new things bought in by the brave that might stick.

The graphics never concern me, what I really look for is a good battle system, well thought out characters, the level systems, abilitys and most important: the story(s). The music is very important for a good rpg becouse it gives you a mood for a scene (eg if a main char dies and there is this happy music playing then i wont take the game seriously). But as long there are people who make games like Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights and the (hopefully) soon to be released Kingdom Hearts, I am not worried that the games will get worse.

I think they're definitely going downhil...

Think about it..back then, we had great RPG's like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 1 through 9, Dragon Warrior/Quest, Mario RPG, Legend of Legaia, Shining Force, Phantasy Star 1 through 4..

.....Now we have:

Final Fantasy 10 & 11, Phantasy Star Online 2, Kingdom Hearts (dunno if that's a good or bad game), and other titles that I don't know about because I don't own too many recent systems besides the PS2...

....Basically, I think RPG's are goin to hell. x.x;; Old skool for me!

I dont think they are going downhill!
Sure there will be bad games, but there have always been bad games.
Some rpgs will rock.
Nowadays developing teams have to find new ideas in order to get a game sold. Characters... villains... In the really old rpgs villain were just evil and wanted to destroy the world, however, today they are given a proper motivation... quite often. I think... games are getting better.
The good games, I mean.
But of course for some reasons totally unexplainable to me, the good old SNES rpgs were best...

Ah, I think I know. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of "old-skool" purists and next-gen haters get their fuel from a large dose of nostalgia. I wouldn't be surprised if the same people 10 years from now start praising the now "old-skool" FFX, with memories of the simple, but charming graphics, sounds, and 3D environments, while complaining about the more modern, non-traditional and complicated aspects of FFXX.
