...and to tell you the truth, I did not enjoy as much as I thought I would. Please let me explain before I get flamed away. First of all, please remember I just beat this game tonight (last ending) 15 years after it's make, and I still thought it was a great game. Awesome gameplay, great graphics for its time, and great characters. I was not too intrigued by the storyline I must admit. I went back and beat this game because I had heard so much good things about it and no negatives, so I had to go back. I really think games like like and most RPG's need to be played at least 5 years within its release date, hence may be the real reason why I didn't enjoy this game as much as I could have. Does anybody agree I may have waited way too long to play this timeless classic, or do you think that maybe I am just being negative and maybe i'm one of the rare few that just did not enjoy this game as hardcore as everybody else. (I would rate this game an above average RPG, giving it a score of around 7.5/10)

Try to play it again later, take your time, to me is the best SNES RPG & it achieved a lot of things.
There are plenty of sidequests that are just amazing.
Also play Chrono Cross, then try to make connections with this game & you'll see that the storyline is truly amazingly crafted, it uses simple elements that exploits them at it's best.
Give the game another try the day you don't have anything to play, there's plenty of multiple endings too.
The game is strong at exploting the details.

Probably you just had too many expectations for the game, that's all.

I don't enjoy it as much now as I did. I've said this several times. Still I played it like 3 times after I got the port.

It still has some power over me, clearly~

A 7.5 is a good rating. You're just another person on the list of people who like Chrono Trigger. Games like this don't get praise because they're everyone's favorites but because opinions in general are positive. There's not much of a discussion to be gained from "I think the game was quite good, but people who liked it slightly more than me have gone too far." It's like when people say something is overrated, often it just means they've discovered that other people like something more than they do. You can't really go into most things expecting to become a crazy fan without being disappointed very often.

I actually don't think Chrono Trigger has aged as well as some other SNES era RPG's. I played it last fall for the first time in probably ten years and while I still enjoyed it and thought it was a great game, I just thought that it left a little to be desired. Doesn't make it a bad game or anything, just that in today's era of RPG's CT's story, in my opinion, leaves a lot on the table.

It's interesting because the game is more or less a carefree light hearted journey through time with a pretty amazing cast of characters. That's the aspect where the game really excels I feel. However, when you look at the game a little deeper it actually deals with some pretty heavy stuff - time traveling, altering the past to make for a better future, changing history for your benefit. I think that there were a lot of areas in this regard that could have been better explored. For example, sure it's great that you take care of the Sunken Desert in 600 AD. But what about any negative consequences of your actions? I'd have like to have seen some more consequences built into the game as it relates to the story and sidequests. I realize the game came out in 1995, but I still think this type of story could have been told. Maybe that's just the BioWare fan in me coming out.

Either way, CT's a great game. But compared to some of the other Square RPG's of the mid-90's I don't think it holds up as well.

x2.

Also, it all boils down to personal taste. One man's trash is another man's treasure, I suppose.

Congrats.

I think it's enough that you enjoyed yourself. You don't have to come out thinking it was the best thing ever.

I think the storyline is good, as far as it goes. The trouble is that its not all that long. Unless you decide to do all the various side quests, the game won't take a seasoned RPGer long to crack.

And without the side quests, most of the characters (likeable as they are) get their one big scene in the limelight, before fading into the background.

This is perhaps understandable in the case of characters like Ayla for example, but Marie (or Marle or whatever her name is), also gets suprisingly little to do, after the first hour or so, considering that she is clearly the main heroine.

I just think that these days, we expect a bit more 'meat on the bone' with regard to character interaction and volume of quests etc.

But let's take nothing away from CT, because it still stands up as a superbly enjoyable game, all these years after its release.

It may have many rivals now, particularly in terms of how epic the story is, but its treatment of time travel is still one of the best you'll find in gaming (which is odd, considering that you would imagine there would be loads of time travel stories out there).

Anyway, good game.

Maybe experience other things has caused you to have low opinion on it (oh experience this from this game, that from that game, etc... just seems like a big compilation of other video games), but back then for me... when Chrono Trigger first came out for the system, it was more of a backbone for other RPGs. The battle system was a little weird at first, sometimes preset battles, but it was one of the few RPGs that actually handled a time travel storyline pretty well...
