Hi all. I would have to say among most RPG and general game fans; FF6, FF7, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana are probably the most highly regarded RPG games of all time. From the majority of peoples lists, it seems these 5 rank the highest. My personal favorite is Final Fantasy Tactics, but I don't believe it is among the most popular or most highly regarded. I want to know which of these 5 games did you see as the best if you HAD to choose 1? Thanks all for voting!

As much as I love FFVII, Chrono Trigger is best to me.

Secret of Mana is really, really awful. I'm not sure why anybody regards it highly. Never played Xenogears, couldn't get into Chrono Trigger and absolutely hate FFVI so I pick FFVII

I have not seen as big of a fan base more so than those 5 RPG's, so I did not add it. I had to put down the games it seems everybody has something good to say about. Even if you're not a fan of one of those, you are most like a big fan of at least 1 of those games up there. I have been across many RPG forums and rankings for game sites, and those 5 get the most praise.

Secret of Mana is from a different time. If you wanted to get hold of JRPGs bakc then, you basically had to import (in Britain anyway).

And more than that, most people had no experience of such games, so when SOM arrived with so much 'you must play this!' fanfare, it was something genuinely new to a lot of people.

To put it into perspective, until games like SOM (and most famously, FF7) came out over here, Zelda: Link to the Past held the top spot in ALL the SNES mags.

And Mana did have a multi-player function - that's still extremely rare (in RPGs anyway), all these years later. The story and characters weren't up to FF standards, but the gameplay was just fine (especially if as I said, you played it with a couple of mates).

Anyway, as to the 'Which is best', I'd have to say FF7.

FF6 was alright, but I really don't get why everyone loves it as much as they do. SOM is fun, but not in the same league and I didn't play Chrono Trigger until it came out on the DS recently and it's too dated for me to enjoy now.

And I haven't played Xenogears at all, so...

I can give you a plenty of reasons, but that doesn't mean that I agree with them too. xD

I went ahead on being the oddball to vote on VI to be my favorite. First of all I have nothing against FFVII, it's a great game. I'm not familiar with the rest of them to be honest, so that's kind of why VI got my vote. I know a little about chrono but not enough to decide on.

I'm not terribly familiar with Xenogears, but I've played at least a bit of all the others.

Chrono Trigger is probably my favorite console RPG of all time.

FFVI wins for me hands down. IMO, it's still the pinnacle of JRPG's even after all these years. FFVII is up there as well, but I tend to think that FFVI did everything FFVII did, just better (with the exception of the graphical upgrades FFVII had).

Interestingly enough I just replayed CT a few months back. It was still a great game, but I don't think it's aged as well as other RPG's from the mid to late 90's.

You're not alone! I voted for VI too. It's easily my favorite of those 5, even though I haven't played Xenogears or Secret of Mana.

Those five may get the most praise, but that doesn't mean that everyone likes one of them. Personally, I would've added a sixth option - Other Game, so that people who don't like any of the specified 5, they can still vote.

Myself, I place a 'No Vote' for any of them.

How about which one is the best of the 5? It doesn't specify but you could look at it like that.

FF6, easily.

FF7 sucked & is really really really overrated.
XG is a weird love-hate for me.
SoM was 'meh'.
CT is a nice game, but overrated.

I could, but after a re-evaluation of game genres I like and subsequently which games I like, out of the five listed, not one of them I would consider to be 'best' or 'better than the others' as I honestly don't like them anymore.

Before though... Xenogears had me in it's camp, then Front Mission 3 came along and blew that up for me, so I still cast a No Vote.

Two of those five games I don't own and have never played, but out of the other three, approaching the situation with an open mind (with regards to the whole FFVII 'thing'; i.e. its fanatical fanbase swaying peoples' judgment on it) I honestly accept them all equally. All three hold lots of great memories for me, and I personally would be doing an injustice to the other two if I chose just one as my favorite.

Although I gotta say, for in pixely sprite form, Terra sure can be easy on the eyes. . . .

Out of all of these, I haven't played Xenogears, but it is hard to decide on a top game for me. Chrono Trigger and FF6 are hand in hand for me and also FF9. FF7 was a great game with a great antagonist and protagonist but the storyline had some major drawbacks to me and it was highly overrated because it was the first 3D Final Fantasy game. I really enjoyed the Materia system because it was new but not as fun as FF8's system though that system could sometimes get really annoying for all the grinding you had to do.

I have to stick with Chrono Trigger... considering it's the 2nd released RPG out of the 5, I think (thinking it came AFTER Seiken Densetsu 2). If CT wasn't there, I would have to go with FF6.
