Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima - Streets Of Rage I + II + III OSV
Vertiphon 2010 Remasters

New link (29/03/2010): http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5471038

This torrent contains the 66 tracks that make up the Original Sound Version soundtracks of the three Sega Genesis Streets Of Rage games. Light remastering, a solid bass end to worry your subs, and enough punch to make The Advent quake on his turntables. IMHO the copies of the sountracks available for download currently are horrible, and drastically required some low-end punch and boosted treble. But NONE of the material here is taken from the officially released SOR audio CDs. This is all VGM renders, and then 24-bit-quality remastering.

A couple of tracks from the SOR1 CD are not included here because I don't wish to remaster officially released sources, and put this even further into a copyright grey area. Also, the SOR3 soundtrack order is a mess on the official CD, so I've taken the liberty to reorder the songs so that they broadly follow the gameplay. However even then, some tracks are re-used, so try not to think about that too much!

Here is a preview track as MP3. (http://www.sendspace.com/file/168jfo)

I don't need to say much more, this is Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. This is Streets Of Rage, and it's awesome.

This is now updated to "version 2", and I promise you this time everything is correct and how it should be. The whole thing had an over-cooked top-end (Thunder Force, I still maintain, is fine, but I admit I f*cked this one a bit too much). There were a couple of mistakes in the artwork, and some tracks were a bit distorted. Even if you acquired and liked the first version, I recommend getting this and ditching the old one.

Yo Vertiphon thanks for this, I always thought the available soundtracks were rubbish too, this music deserves good sounds, cant wait to hear your version, thanks for your efforts.

I wonder if I could ask your remastering process? just theirs some tracks of other music I wouldnt mind giving the make over.

Still again thanks for your effort.

I downloaded it and I have issues with your rip Vertiphon. I'm not angry with you I'm just criticizing your methods of your remasters (this includes Gunstar Heroes and TF stuff).

* You boosted the floor volume waaaay too high (aka recorded too loud).
* 24-bit is useless for this type of source.

Running your rips on different setups (some middle end and some high end) the songs sounded like crap.

I would highly recommend not boost the floor volume and stop using 24-bit. Yes I do use have a 24-bit DAC and honestly for this type of source material its useless. I don't even think many members here have a sound card that supports a bit-rate that high.

That's just me, my opinion.

Vertiphon, these remasters are amazing, they have a lot more kick to them and actually sound like they could be played at a club now thanks to your touch ups. Well thanks for putting in the effort to remastering these and these versions are definitely replacing the official soundtracks on my iPod for sure.

Vertiphon
04-07-2010, 01:52 AM
I hope you are not disappointed Sound Reaper. Thanks, guys, for the comments. I'm not a pro, by the way, just someone who is very determined to learn to do this stuff properly.

I listen to a lot of techno, electro, dubstep and other "modern electronic genres" (sorry, that sounds elitist, but there's no better way to describe them). I'm used to how they sound when mastered, and I went for that with SOR. I'm not sure if the kick drums Koshiro-san used are PCM samples, or VERY good FM programming... but my remaster certainly gives my sub-woofer a workout. :)

I'm considering new games, but also real life and my own music is taking up my time. Don't expect one any time soon. (And as for Sonic, two problems: there's over a 100 tracks, and the VGM files for Sonic 2 and 3 do not specify the composers per track, only that 5 of them worked on "all" of them...)

Would you mind telling how you go about "remastering" the tracks? I only ask because there's a few games I wouldn't mind doing that to, that I doubt you or many others would want.

Despair, this is a free forum - I presume? - don't let me or anyone stop you from releasing your own remasters of video-game music. Although I would recommend taking from "VGM" sources, obviously, and not using officially, commercially released sources to start from.

As for "how", there is no short answer, except read the "bible" (http://www.digido.com/mastering-audio-book.html). :)

Ah, I see. Truth be told I had just ripped SoR1-3, Ristar, both Ecco's and Gunstar Heroes just before your remasters were posted. It's just once I get the vgm's transfered to wavs and all, I'm not sure what to do to "remaster" it. I assume audacity doesn't have the tools I need.

If you haven't spent a lot of time listening to many different genres of music (and I mean, most of your life), and you are not using good studio monitors (speakers), you will find it difficult to get reliable results. Almost certainly what sounds good on your headphones and speakers/monitors, will turn out to sound weak/too muddy/too tinny/otherwise "not right" elsewhere (I've been there done that, look what happened with the first version of this remaster), unless you've - frankly - spent out on a good monitoring system, and are sitting in a room that has been well treated, and you have trained your ears. This is why I said: if you have any vaguely serious interest in the subject, read Bob Katz's book. I am NOT trying to discourage you from trying, I'm saying this is difficult and takes time to get right.

If Audacity allows you to chain VST effects, then yes you can do some things with it, but it's like when I used to remaster in Sound Forge... it does the job but you can do more if you use a professional DAW/sequencer such as SADiE, Digital Performer, Ableton etc.

I have already made a remaster of Gunstar Heroes (Thread 74347).

It could be possible that I could upload them, but I have two problems, one, they are conversions from the version 1 remaster that I got from Shadow1 since I am having some issues with torrents lately, so I can't get version 2, and two, I am not sure if Vertiphon would appreciate me uploading them and sharing them here since it could take away possible downloaders and seeders from his torrent.

I'm not concerned about that, Sohn, I'm just providing the original source. Perhaps I should have stated in the original post that, should anyone wish to provide MP3 copies, you are welcome to. Hell, I didn't write the music! :)

However if anyone wants to do this, I would recommend using LAME -V 0 or -alt-preset cbr 320. Please package the art and text files with them, too, but include a second text file stating that it's an encoding from the original FLACs, and that they can be found here.

The effort is commendable, but the VGM platform is far from perfect. Until an accurate core like that of Fusion's is implemented bit-for-bit in VGM players I'm taking the emulator route.

Vertiphon
04-10-2010, 05:24 PM
No new versions coming.

And Pulsar, if you try the sample MP3, and compare to the original VGM playback, you should be able to hear the improvement. But I'm not doing this for purists. KEGA's audio emulation is barely much different to what you'll hear on VGM.

Your choice, obviously, but I've listened to so much FM-based music (it's like the swiss-army knife for techno artists like Cari Lekebusch or The Advent), that it doesn't concern me - I have yet to hear any perfect emulation, VGM is quite close enough.

Torrents are currently down due to my server undergoing a renovation. I appreciate all the thankyou's, and I'm glad people are enjoying this.

Those "other" people, on the other hand, what did you expect? I have no wish to remaster officially released CDs (the redistribution of which is not legal) or make my own arrangements. I'm not a purist either, so minor differences in sound quality re: Gens vs Kega (i.e. they're minimal), don't concern me as long as it sounds close to the original Genesis. And having played all these games on the real thing, I can assure you, it's close.

Pain, I think you're better off looking into SOR fansites for more info about those, as I'm not sure what you're referring to. This, as all the remasters I made, was created using VGMs from the games. Whatever was in the game should be here. I'm no SOR expert (as in the game and it's lore etc) though, so please try fansites.

12-27-2010 05:58 PM"

Where is Vertiphon? I'd love him to do remasters of Sonic 1, 2, 3, K and 3D, as well as Revenge of Shinobi.

It also appears (by my time zone) that Vertiphon's last post up there was the same time as Vertiphon's last activity, so he obviously logged out immediately after that post. The question is, why did he SUDDENLY disappear, and why hasn't he been here for so long?

Also when (if) you return, please for the love of sanity, stay away from torrents. THey are nothing but crap. I'd rather download something in 1 hour or less ALL the time, than have to wait until there are seeders and even then, have to wait 5 weeks because the download speed is so slow. I have a 1.2 MB (10 Mbit) download speed, so speeds of the region of 300 to 400 bytes is very frustrating. Use mediafire, or megaupload or... something. Upload the actual files themselves, not the stupid torrents that should NEVER have been invented.

It is actually quite a long time ago, in terms of forums, and is rather odd how his last visit date is exactly the same as his last post, suggesting he logged off, immediately after making that post, and the fact he hasn't even visited the forums, let alone posted at all, since then, is rather odd.

No problem. :) TPB isn't the ideal place to list torrents, for these reasons, on the other hand they ARE ideal since submission is really easy, they take practically anything as long as it's properly tagged.
