Parasite Eve

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Get these two ASAP.
Everything about Parasite Eve is pure awesomeness, the battle system is awesome, the graphics are also great, the storyline is great & hooking, the soundtrack too, there's New Game+ with a something new to explore, so there's replayability. You can't miss this one.

Castlevania SOTN is the best title you'll ever see to give the best use to the MetroidVania formula, there's plenty to explore, awesome soundtrack, the gameplay is very variated, summon familiars, cast spells with button combinaton, shapeshifting, lot of equipment, relics. Epic boss fights. This game is very very fun.

Then I'll reccommend you:

Both Suikoden, I didn't finished neither of both, but the storyline is very intriguing, the thing is that the battle system kind of sucks.

Legend Of Mana, this game is fun, it's a very non-linear RPG.

Both Vandal Hearts, again, intriguing storyline, but I'm not a fan of TRPG's even though I love FFT.

Front Mission 3, You'll have some fun on this one. TRPG with Mechas beating the crap out of them.

both Tales Of. The battle system on this series is purely awesome & fun. It's like a fighting game.

Koudelka, the gameplay sucks in almost every single way, but the characters are purely awesome, very realistic personalities & very memorable dialogues.

There's still a lot of RPG's that I didn't played yet. Hail the PSX

SOTN rox...though it's really more of a sidescroller/action game than RPG, with rpg elements.

I own parasite eve and i must say it is insane. You can move everywhere during battle and that is quite intuitive to rpgs, but the story is pretty weird...mitochondria take over people and make them go aflame, youre the only person who doesnt go aflame and somehow you're related to "mitochandria eve" aka 1st "woman" in the world.

Still, I recommend.

Yeah Parasite Eve is INSANE, in the good way.
About SOTN you're right, but it still rocks. I'm a castlevania fanboy practically xD.

I liked (out of the games you mentioned): Grandia, Parasite Eve, Suikoden, Star Ocean: The 2nd Story, Koudelka, and Persona.

Rhapsody is like the super easiest RPG I've ever played. Pancake special just literally destroys nearly everything.

The Terminator

I'd still give Castlevania Symphony of the Night a look at just for the hell of it. It's a possible candidate for being my all time favorite game. Even if it's not much of an rpg game in the sense of like gripping story and battle systems. It does have a more side scrolling action rpg type of gameplay in the style of metroid with lots of areas to explore, hidden weapons, upgrades, spells etc. The music is great, it has a darkly atmospheric feel to it making it one of the most memorable soundtracks from the PSone game library. It's a cult classic that defines the castlevania series.

If you're looking more at a rpg similar to that of Final Fantasy, I'd give Parasite Eve a try. It was one of those short lived cult series made by Square. It's my favorite game outside of Final Fantasy that Square did. The music is great once again. The gameplay is pretty cool, it has a turn based battle system but you can still move to dodge projectiles, which makes for an interesting feature for a turn based rpg battle system. The story of the game was actually based on the sci-fi horror novel also titled "Parasite Eve" written by Hideaki Sena. It takes a little bit to follow but it's quite unique and interesting.

SOTN - Everything about the game is a must have including the song Dance of pales which may give you an eargasm.
Tales of Destiny - I'm just now playing this game.
Tales of Destiny 2 (Tales of Eternia) - Good game beaten it a few its one of the better Tales games.
Tatics Ogre - Never played it but I've heard its like FFT so it must be good considering its made by the same guy.
Legend of Mana and Legaia - GET THEM. It's somewhat like the old zelda games. IMO

Legend of Dragoon - It got me hooked on the RPG and if I had never played that at such a young age I never would have got into Final Fantasy, and therefore probably never would have built up a tolerance for cut scenes that fill up games (like in FF and MGS). If I never got into those japanese type RPG/Action games then I probably never would have been much of a gamer at all! I owe everything to this game

My 2 favorite Psx games would be FF9 and Legend of Dragoon. FF9 had the best storyline out of all the Final Fantasy games on the psx and Legend of Dragoon is so good for me I would play it again if I owned it right now and I've beaten it 4 times already. FF8 is close behind those two as well.

The actually do have a link & many references. Though I've finished only Suiko I, I only saw the beginning of II. But I did my homework before playing both games.
The thing is that it Suiko II is a direct Sequel, but you don't need to play one to enjoy the game, but having played the first game before, it will potentially enhance the experience.
Characters from the original Suikoden reappear & they are playable.
In fact, if you have a memory of Suiko I with all the 108 characters, in suiko II you can load that memory & start a new game with some additions & you can see the real & Cannonical ending.

So Bottom line, yes, It's almost imperative to play them in order.

Bump again. I have update my list. The games I am most certainly trying to purchase now are Suikoden 1 & 2, and Legend of Mana. I was looking into Tales of Destiny 1 and 2 and their battle systems looked awesome. I really liked the battle system of Valkyrie Profile and the Tales of series look similar. I was looking to purchase Tales of Destiny 2 more so than 1 because I heard it's better. Any recommendations on this, or any other games? Thanks all.

The first couple 'Legend of Heroes' were never released on our side of the pond, but they were highly enjoyable and you might be able to find something over in emulation, but NA has received PSP ports. 'Trails in the Sky' is also being released tomorrow on PSP if you want to look in to that. As for PSX recommendations, I see you already have 'Lunar' and 'Star Ocean 2', so I'll just add +1 to 'Alundra'.

Suikoden and Suikoden 2 are the best RPGs on that list besides Final Fantasy and Lunar series. Suikoden is a very interesting story that I could give details about if you are interested in the faqs. Xenogears is also an awesome choice.

---------- Post added at 11:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:49 PM ----------

yes fortunatly Suikoden and Suikoden 2 are tied right together. If you play Suikoden 1 it actually lets you continue into the second one with the oppertunity to play with the hero from the first one later in the game. Characters interact with how the first game played (the characters that actually came from the first that followed into the second...not all are from both titles). Its a great one-two punch for a RPG series!

Its been a while since I've played any games, but I did purchase Suikoden 1 on the PS store. Only played it for an hour and never got into the gameplay. I didn't even battle yet so I cant really comment. Any insight on Suikoden 1?

Shinzju
12-09-2011, 06:39 AM
Well Suikoden 1 starts out in Gregminster of the Scarlett Moon Empire...You play the son of a general to the empire that is killed at the beginning of the game, which you are forced to leave Gregminster to start your quest. Basically as the game progresses into the early stages you are contacted by Lakknat a bearer of the Gate Rune which directs you to take the Soul Catcher Rune one of the 27 True Runes (Runes create magic) and eventually join the rebel force and become the leader ( over time, you are not trusted by some of the main characters) to eventually lead the rebel forces to fight the Empire. The game itself in its fighting format gives you a total of 6 in your party which each player can be equipped with runes that create magic (a total of three). Weapons are upgraded by going to a smith never purchasing new weapons all originals for every character. The story itself gets better as you get into the game (took time for me to grow on it myself) but all in all you will fall in love by the end. Id say to get the second Suikoden first because its story and its all around gameplay surpasses the original in every way. The games tie together in a way but are also in there own respect there own stories. Seriously give it another shot you wont be dissapointed!

---------- Post added at 12:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:34 AM ----------

Also you can down the coarse of your journey collect the 108 stars of destiny which you can fight with all of them and also some parts of the ending will change if you collect all of them before a part in the timetable of the game. You also do battles in the game which makes it not only a rpg but a strategy type game! I mean its almost like Shinning Force in some sence but with a better story.

I thought Legend of Manna was pretty bad ass. Chrono Trigger and Chrono cross are good as well as most of the final fantasy’s (I am one of the only people I know who is not a fan of FFT) Parasite Eve was good but I wasn’t too thrilled about the second one. Jade cocoon was fun when I was younger, I don’t remember it too well now. Suikoden was alright too, but I don’t think I ever finished the game. Anyways, those are the games I have purchased and were bad ass.

SO im looking for a long lost RPG, cant remember the name, just played the demo once when i was a kid and now i want to the game :)
SO- all i know is its on PS1 the story line i think follows the hero and some evil fog that starts to cover the world. The hero has the ability to learn hand to hand combat/ when you learn the move you have to physical punch it in every time. So you know its classic RPG style turn base attacks, but you have to tab (O,X,OO) etc. it was fun...
sorry i cant give any more info..., hope this rings a bell.

One of my favorite rpg of all time is King's Field. I know it has horrible graphics, but I love the soundtrack, the ambiance and most of all the level design! My favorite map in 3D, better in my opinion then the one in Metroid Prime (and that is saying a lot)
By the way, Demon's souls and Dark souls are spiritual successor to this game
Also, for the time it is quite amazing to see that there is no loading screen in the game (except when dying :P)

Digimon World, Digimon World 2, and Digimon World 3 should all be on this list.
