So, I've been trying to figure out some new RPG's to get and I wanted your guys' opinions as to what games that are out there that you think are worthy and also about the games I am thinking about getting. I have the GBA, PSP, DS, and PS2 (don't bother telling me about games on other systems, because I'm not going to bother buying a new system just for a game or two). I'm not a fan of tactical games (which is why I haven't played any of the the Breath of Fire games), nor am I a fan of the new FF graphics on the DS. I'm a pretty big fan of the 2-D style graphics btw which is why I was looking at some of the games like Star Ocean.

RPG games I have played, so you get an idea of what I prefer, are:
Almost all the FF's (I've played on the NES, SNES, GBA, DS, PSP, PSX, PS2)
The rest of these were all on the PSX:
Chrono Cross
Threads of Fate
Legend of Dragoon
Vagarant Story
Parasite Eve

I do have Chrono Trigger for the PSX and I have Legend of Heroes II for the PSP but I haven't gotten to into them yet.

Games I am thinking about getting:
Golden Sun (GBA)
Sword of Mana (GBA)
Dragon Quest series (DS)
Disgaea (DS)
Ragnarok (DS)
World Ends with You (DS)
Black Sigil:Blade of the Exile (DS)
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes (DS)
Children of Mana (DS)
Star Ocean:First Departure and Second Evolution (PSP)
Phantasy Star (PSP)
Valkyrie Profile (PSP)
Legend of Mana (PSX)
Brave Fencer Musashi (PSX)

Breath of Fire isn't a tactics series so maybe you should go ahead and try them?

Tales of Eternia for the PSP. Very good story and strange but fun battle system.
Pokemon games? I enjoy them.

Dragon Quest series dude, all of them on the DS.

Ooooh, yeah. Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 is fantastic. Chapters of the chosen on DS was decent. Not amazing though. Hands of the Heavenly Bride I found fantastic though.

Avoid Dragon Quest Monsters at all costs. A poor mans pokemon.

Stay away from Breath of Fire V... that game is terrible. Breath of Fire II is the best imo.

Try the Suikoden Series as well, even though there is a pseudo tactical part to the main battles, the majority of the game is like your standard RPG.

Btw, what consoles do you have that you're looking for games? Would be a little easier to make recommendations knowing what consoles you have.

One of my friends had one of the Breath of Fire games and told me it was a tactical game similar to FFT, which was why I never bothered to even check it out. If it's not like FFT then I'll have to check it out.

Pokemon games? I enjoy them.

Tried them, couldn't stop laughing at the fact that it was Pokemon enough to play any of them seriously.

Definately enjoy oldschool style stuff.

Hmm, could've sworn I put it in the first post; I've got the GBA, PSP, PS2 and DS.

yeah... BoF doesn't play like that at all. They play like traditional JRPGs mostly. 'except for BoF V.

Quoted for additional assurance that Breath of Fire is a straight-forward JRPG. Maybe your friend was thinking of Fire Emblem?

Regardless, Breath of Fire II is a lot of fun and worth your time. I've only played the SNES version, but it's on the GBA, too.

And I definitely second the Suikoden recommendation. Suikoden I-III are awesome, and most who have played the others say IV is mediocre but V is great. Besides the interesting stories and fun game play, they also have a lot of mini-games. In Suikoden II, you can play in a cooking competition, a fishing game, a gambling game, a climbing game, create plays in a theater, send detectives off to get dirt on characters (of which there are 108 playable ones), receive mail, etc. They're all on Playstation or Playstation 2.

Man, I just don't know enough games to make any recommendations :( But certainly if you have Chrono Trigger you're good to go!

I went out and found and got the two Star Ocean games for the PSP. I really couldn't find anything else! I realize that I will have to buy PSX games online and probably GBA ones as well since there's not a real big selection in games stores for the GBA anymore since the DS came out. Speaking of the DS, I couldn't find a single Dragon Quest game for the system in any of the game stores I went to! But I will check out Breath of Fire then and Suikoden from the desciption you gave sounds pretty good. Thanks guys :)

I was talking to jakob.nelson about Suikoden a while ago and sent him these YouTube links so he could check out some playthroughs. Here they are in case you want to see what the games look like:

My bad...

I'd recommend the following games:

Gameboy Advance
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II
Golden Sun
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Rare to find nowdays)

PlayStation Portable
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Breath of Fire III
Breath of Fire IV

PlayStation 2
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Suikoden IV (Even though the story is a little weak, the gameplay is solid.)
Suikoden V (Big improvement over Suikoden IV)
Star Ocean Til the End of Time (A lot of people don't like this game, but I enjoyed it.)
Legaia 2 Dual Saga
Xenosaga

Nintendo DS (Haven't played many on the NDS... only this one)
Final Fantasy III

I would recommend Suikoden Tactics, set 5 years before then 2 years (I believe) after Suikoden IV but as it's a tactical RPG, I don't think you'd like it (As from your response in a earlier post).

However, it's not like Final Fantasy Tactics in that you don't change jobs (as in FFT), or choose different paths of job progression once you hit a certain level (as in Vandal Hearts), or micro management of Vandal Hearts II.

Gameplay wise it's similar to how Vandal Hearts is played: 3d graphical sprites moving around in turns, with set radius for attacks (Both melee and magic). All the characters have their own set job from the beginning and they stay as that job til the end of the game.

It's a 'beginner' TRPG imo, simplified menus and gameplay, but as it ties in with Suikoden IV (Some of the characters re-appear in this game, even the Hero of Suikoden IV) it's an 'ok' game.

These all look pretty good to pick up thanks. It looked like the first two or three of Suikoden series looked better to my liking graphics wise, but it's always good to play them in order anyways :) Breath of Fire looked awesome, I'm not sure why my friend said it was a tactical game...perhaps he was thinking of the Fire Emblem series.

I actually have and have played one of the Zelda games on GBA, I believe it's Four Swords though, I'd have to check. I have also played and forgot to mention Crisis Core (which I did enjoy) and Dissidia as wellas the Xenosaga series for the PS2. I will have to check out the others then.

I'm not a big tactical gamer, for some reason the way the battle system is set up turns me off the most. I don't like having to move on a minature chessboard for battling. I also am not a big fan of job changing and when you throw that into the mix with the chessboard battle setup...well I'm probably not going to play it. But since you say you don't change jobs in Suikoden Tactics, it may be more tolerable for me and may actually turn me into tactics then, who knows ,anything is possible right? :)

Well Suikoden Tactics does tie in to Suikoden IV (The first part of the game does, then after that only bits and pieces due to ST being set a few years iirc after S4), so to get the full story/feel to S4 I'd recommend giving ST a shot. It's not a overtly difficult game to finish so you could just rent it out.

It does follow the old 'chessboard battlefield' per se, but if you can look beyond that, it is a decent TRPG imo.

If you play games on the PC, I would recommend the following:

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Quest for Glory series (If you can find any in this series by Sierra, definately give them a try. Old RPG's yes, but the gameplay is solid, the music and voice acting fits perfectly and the stories are brilliant. I highly recommend this series to anyone who plays RPG's on a PC.)
Any of SSI (Strategic Simulations Incorporated) RPG, particularly Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn and Dark Queen of Krynn (Based off the universe created by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman in the Dragonlance novellas.).

However, those choices are only IF you play games on PC. If not, the disregard the above.

feralanima

I may have to give ST a try then, once I get through the other four, esp if it does follow in the same story in the beginning.

The only PC game I play is Wow and that's only on the weekends when I'm over at my one friends place because he enjoys having someone to play with and I'm the only one who will at the moment. I have heard of most of those games and heard plenty of good things about them, but I'm not a PC gamer.
