So, I was actually thinking of maybe buying FFXIII when it comes out, but I wanted to ask if the FF games are connected story wise. If they are, most likely I will not get it, but if it isn't, that may persuade me more to get it.

Seeing as how I've never played a FF game, that's why I'm asking this.

I still find it so damn weird that you're in an Final Fantasy (sort of) forum and you haven't played a single one.

None of them are connected in any way story-wise unless they have the same number. As in Final Fantasy VII had a prequel and two sequels that had the same number (FFVII Crisis Core for example).
You can pick up XIII if you want. Story-wise you won't be lost. :D

This should've been posted in the General Final Fantasy (http://forums.ffshrine.org/forumdisplay.php?f=19) sub forum.

No, the Final Fantasy games are NOT all linked together storywise. True there are some exceptions as Smarty pointed out regarding The Final Fantasy VII Compilation, but that's about it.

FFXII, FFT, FFTA and some others are part of the Ivalice Collection, as they're set on the same world, though at varying times through it's history.

For more information, go to the Final Fantasy Compendium (http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/) and look around that site. Has a lot of information about crossovers in the games etc.

You have 1,300 posts on an FF forum and you don't know :S

Final Fantasy games have different strories and characters in every game, unless it is a sequel, spinoff or prequel eg Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII

So, I guess it's safe to assume that most people here are actually FF fans? :D

Thanks for the answer to my question guys. :)

That's what I thought. A lot of the shriners here claim no allegiance to FF at all, but still love posting here. Smarty's response sort of threw me off a bit.

I thought it was a bit odd at first that there was a community largely uninterested in Final Fantasy in the "Final Fantasy Shrine Forums" but then realized that there are quite a few that are interested in the series. Those that are interested in it are outnumbered by those that aren't, for sure. It would be intriguing to see the results of a "Do you like Final Fantasy" poll in general discussion or general gaming (because those that aren't interested probably never go into the general FF subforum and putting it there would give bad results.)

pretty simple, the first FF on NES was gonna be sakaguchi's last game, hence the title.
it turned out massive profits

Actually no. The series began in 1987 as an eponymous video game developed to save Square from bankruptcy; the game was a success and spawned sequels.

Sakaguchi stated that if the game didn't work out, then it would be Square's 'Final' Fantasy.

Pisces Knight

i was gonna say that too, it was squares "final" game if it flopped due to squares near bankruptcy, however, i recall reading in a videogame magazin (gamepro i think, not sure) that sakaguchi said it was gonna his last game, so im kinda conflicted actually

Darth Revan

It wouldn't of just be Sakaguchi's last game, it would've been the last game made by anyone in Square period.

I've heard this story already and what DH says is true. If anything, I think he meant it will be his last game for Square (if it did flop).

Sakaguchi, he's the one that did Blue Dragon right?

He shouldn't have left square enix.

Buy a good game instead. FFXIII looks pretty awful.

You should probably just avoid the whole jRPG genre since it's not very good.

Don't you just love it when people think their opinions are facts.

Just for the record, I love (most) final fantasy games, of course I'm going to play FFXIII. Stick with the General Discussion forum if you don't like FF.

FF13 really does look pretty shitty though. It's insanely linear (literally - you walk down hallways/paths and get to a boss at the end) and the story/gameplay seems to have taken second billing to the graphics.

I also liked Final Fantasy until I realised they aren't actually all that great.

This is general gaming, by the way. You're allowed to talk about whatever games you like.

FFX was the same with the linearity ie walk a while, cutscene, boss and that was one of the best FF's (IMO) so i'm not bothered about that.

Again though, it's your opinion they aren't that great. I think they are.

FFX was pretty linear, but nowhere near as linear as critics/fans have said FFXIII is. A lot of Japanese critics/fans dislike the game a lot. FFX also had sidequests/minigames which FF13 doesn't have until about ~40 hours in, I hear. You also can't do anything other than what the game wants you to until that far in.

All I'm saying is it's probably worth waiting to see how the game is received rather than buy it just because it's Final Fantasy. This seems like a step down for the series. Well, maybe a step up. FFXII was also really, really awful.

I've read a few reviews of it actually, most rate it highly. only a minority that I have seen have given it a poor review.

As for FFXII. The story and characters were terrible but I actually really liked it. It was different.

This segway from your post, started with this one:

Hence the discussion going off towards Final Fantasy history, instead of the history of Final Fantasy Shrine. So if you want to blame someone for the conversation leaning away from your question, look to CATASTROPHE.

i believe we just got owned

Not really, just the conversation went off on another tangent than what was asked.
