what does that mean? the original wwise is low quality? OP said he's not touched the quality. perhaps the 360 version may have better quality audio. don't lose hope yet.

Each game that uses the wwise audio platform uses different bitrates and sample rates. he has kept the original ogg codec that is compresed with the codec, 360 might use xma BUT almost all wwwise games the newer ones use ogg,

Im assuming hcs's tool was used?

Cool, thanks.

Edit

Not to rain on your party, of course, but this rip is very poorly done. Why have you included all the ambience and natural wind sounds. The tracks aren't looped or faded or edited when needed (e.g. layered tracks). The tracks aren't numbered. Plus, there are duplicate tracks all over the place, and the themes are scattered all over the album - e.g. The Illusive Man is track 78, and has eleven duplicates?!

Anyhow the rip/complete score mix that my cousin is working on will be organized based on the game's storyline and will have tracknames. I've only got three tracks that she sent me, but I'll see if she can send me some more.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9PKHWFVO

And again, no offense is meant to you, Maklai, you made a great preliminary rip for the game but simply it was not executed into a rip that I or other people picky to my level could enjoy listening to.

i dont get why VGM legacy is attacking this guy. people need to stop being picky. its a gamerip and it can take alot of personal time to perfect a release. all he's done is convert a tricky audio format to ogg and give it to people in record time. sure its nice to have it loop, labbelled etc but this can happen alongside this speedy release. the 360 release may have better audio quality so perhaps having learnt this information we can better the situation with a new rip, in the mean time you can enjoy the extra tracks on this release not featured in the normal ost release.

Thank you, VGM Legacy Member. Next time I think twice before spread something on this elitist forum.

OrangeC
01-31-2010, 09:32 PM
AFC is just an archive, inside them are Wise riffs wavs that nedded to be converted with ww2ogg from hcs tools page to normal ogg vorbis tracks.

cut out the riffs with a hex editor or riff scanner you should spot the headers easily.

can you recommend me any good hex editor?I dont have any experience with hex editors but I'd really like to learn it, do you think i can figure it our by myself? I just know that those numbers in a hex editor represent various 0 and 1 combinations xD

oh and you got a link for the ww2ogg programm? I googled it but i cant find any download link lols

You can get hex workshop.

Then search for the "RIFF" strings and cutout the data in between them including the RIFF at the beginning of eatch file.

save as wav and convert.

In hex you have to highlighr riff along with the ret of the data to the next rifd, cut that out to a track repeat for the next riff.

Or you can use a simple riff scanner like nova extractor and it extracts the riffs to wav files, then use ww2ogg.

hmm i see why some files are not converting, Those particular tracks are not ogg vorbis inside the WWise containers but they are some adpcm which i am not sure what they are? all other files with qvorb tag in hex can be converted.

anyway i have no time for this rip.

I finally found out how to playback the Ripped tracks from Mass Effect2 that were not getting converted by Audio Kinetic wise.

The Tracks in Citadelhubstreaming are compressed in voxware byte aligned (whatever that may be , probaly a special codec) I wonder why they didnt compress that one in Vorbis, too O.o
Also there were some tracks in Kasumis Stolen Memories that couldnt be converted. They are also Voxware byte aligned.

After ripping the Wav's from AFC you havto open up those Wav's n a hex editor.
In the header at offset 0x00000014, change the Data from 69 to 11 and save. Now the Wav Data is playable in VLC player or Winamp and Quicktime. Unfortunately the music sounds kinda crappy , but if you listen carefully you'll hear the Dark star lounge music beat.
I upoladed the dark star lounge music here.

Does some one have an idea why the file playbacks so fuzzy?

There's a particular bgm from the kasumi DLC that I'm really interested in, its the bgm with the beautiful piano piece that plays when you first enter the mansion.

could some one try to rip that bgm?

I kinda researches about the x0069 string, Seems to be used in Xbox ADPCM audio also! There are codecs to play back it on the comp , theres even a winap plugin that can playback the Wav x0069 audio but it didnt work for me. hmm:(

Well i think this little program solves all audio extraction problems, the best part is it extracts all tracks with filenames and converts the voxware tracks as well.

So not sure about if it works for dlc or not but hey why not.

Managed to record the bgm I mention earlier. volume's a little low but otherwise a fantastic piece of music.

Track is looped.

Here it is: the Piano Trio heard in Donovan Hock's mansion.

All files have to be in the .afc files, just point it to the whole mass effect 2 directory and let it run, does everything for you.

Do you have an explanation for Bioware using Voxware codec for some of their tracks? Why didnt they just use the vorbis codec just like for the majority of the files.

OrangeC

I am not sure why they have used this crap codec, but atleast with the little app i posted you can extract.convert every sound with filenames so you can also combine combat segments also.

I was able to rip the Dark Star Lounge music (finally). It doesnt work for the DLC's tho further more- the program crashes when I select the DLC Cooked PC dir.

The programm converts the Voxware files to normal RAW Wave files , so theres no particula Quality loss, even tho the quality doesnt seem to be good anyway. I recorded the Dark Star Lounge music , the quality of the recorded one was much better and also the ripped one lacks some sound effects and beat, it seems that unreal edits the sound before streamin it xD oh well.

I try to edit the Dark star wav in Soundforge.
Still thank you for this programm! Whoever did it probably should make one for the DLC's too :o

get ww2ogg08 and afcextr;

create a .bat file with:

@echo off
for %%a in (*.afc) do afcextr "%%a"
for %%a in (*.wav) do ww2ogg "%%a" --full-setup
del *.wav

let it run where you extracted all afc files with 7zip program from the original DLC exe.

and for the people who want the Kasumi music (including the party music) in original 320kbps quality - go to monarchaudio (official composer) and after playing all 4 files there check your temp internet files folder for the mp3 files and/or direct links.

MASSEFFECT
09-22-2010, 12:47 AM
You can also Extract the piano Music but I'd Rather recommend recording and encoding it. I extracted the piano music of kasumi but the Quality was kinda noisy , the engine in game edits the sound a bit so id suggest just recording it, but however im pretty sure someone has uploaded it already lols. Its the same guy who requested the piano music anyway.

ivsasg1
09-22-2010, 02:26 PM
The previously uploaded recording has a quite low recording volume/level - that's why I've recommended to get the official/original 320kbps mp3 files from the monarchaudio website as they have much better quality. As far as I can see the game uses lower quality encoding for storing the music files (compared to a 320kbps 44100Hz mp3 that is) and I thought that recording it externally and compressing it again would result in a much lower sound quality than it would be getting the original files, unless they are different music wise. P.S. thanks for all the effort!

Ogg Vorbis is more advanced than MP3. It needs fewer bitrate for the same perceived quality.

If you do a straight extraction of the audio from the AFC files and process them from RIFF-WAV to OGG (no re-encode) you get 32KHz VBR files somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 Kbps (I've seen ranges of ~75-105 or thereabouts). So yes, that is the bitrate in game.

WHAT! Why are they so low!? I thought they would be like 500Kbps or so.

Pre-extraction there are 1191 AFC files totaling 2.54 GB, at least last time I ripped it (might not include Arrival, I forget).
Dumping those and before removing dialogue, cutscenes and SFX, you have ~103,500 files totaling 2.88 GB. If that was all 500 Kbps CBR, you'd have more than 10 GB of audio for a game that itself is currently 19.2 GB with all DLC installed. So storage is a major consideration. Next up would be drive transfer rates.

In game, you're going to have to really, _really_ listen and have an exceptional soundcard, amps, and speakers to notice. Even listening to the files as extracted from the game, they are quite good. I might personally wish for at least 128 Kbps CBR, if not 256, but the game needs them to be small so it can grab what it needs, when it needs it (well a little before maybe) without smashing the drive interface flat. By default, ME2 allows 64 simultaneous sounds, so if those were all at the bitrate you expected, the drive could potentially be requested to instantaneously transfer anywhere from 15 to 60 Mbytes of data _for audio_ on top of all the data it's already pushing around for the graphics. On systems like mine with a dedicated sound card (first gen X-Fi in this case), you can reasonably edit the INI to allow 128 channels to prevent (potential) clipping in heavy firefights. ME2, based on Unreal Engine 3, uses a combination of streaming and caching for everything, it helps keep the load times down and allows some reasonably large maps at the same time.

TL;DR: it's not technically feasible for a game to spend as much or more IO on audio than it does on video. Audio is, and always will be, a second priority to the graphics system in a game. This is not a Blu-Ray where they can spend 10-15 Mbps on a 7.1 audio stream.

In the case of ME2, no. It's OGG that's just been encoded as a RIFF WAV using WWise. That's why the WAV > OGG 'conversion' is lossless in this case...it's just OGG with a funky header. So the extraction process for ME2 goes like this: extract all .WAV from the AFC archives then re-write the WWise RIFF header to be OGG standard. Done. The monumentally irritating part is the 100,000+ files.

Basically, I could say that vgm's sound quality has gone down since the PS1 and N64 days (or any game system using MIDI) since they were in a TRULY lossless format. So a Playstation 1 has better audio quality than an Xbox 360. HA!
Midi just can't be defeated...
A PS1 can STILL beat todays consoles in some aspects...

Thanks for info btw.
