I just got back online today. A few days ago i downloaded a part of some music for the game Rachet & Clank, as i was downloading the file i got infected with the XP Antivirus 2010 trojan. This sucker was particularly nasty. It took me two days to clean the computer and then i had to delete my profile just to be sure! So i'm warning everyone right now!

Ever try Firefox and the plug-in: NoScript? Usually, it's the third-party advertisers that can become infected with some type of virus and, if the script is ran through your web browser, it might download the virus without you knowing, until it's too late that is.

I have issues with FileFactory. I also have problems with letitbit. I suspect that site gave me spyware.

Actually the rootkit/trojan/fake app pop up you speak of is mostly as someone previously stated linked to 3rd party advertisment servers/co's.

Same thing got a friend of mine on megaupload during a certain ad. Same thing got my kid brother last year on a wikia site. Most standard removal (av+one simple rootkit removal) WILL NOT kill it. Franky if it's been there more then a day and you constantly are connected to the net (like most of us) it's probably best to get ahold of a external drive, back up all important files (also if you know what a sandbox is..install one on a different pc, boot your extrenal drive with your files backed up on , and scan them for any infections INSIDE the sandbox) once your back up is done, reformat ... that is if reformat is easy for ya.

Also as a very common known fact, when going into murky waters.. (all file sharing sites will qualify) do not stop beign alert... most pop ups happen during the "wait" for file download time ( free user dl) or after you click on the LIVE download link (free and premium) 90 percent of the time that's when pops up happen. If you manage to right click and "close" fast enough on these pop ups they wont do jack to ya, but if you go que your dl, make a samich and then come back...well that's almost like leaving an unattended toddler in a pool. Last but not least, while i Know having to "reclick" on a few pages may take up valuable seconds...CLOSE THE TAB (one used for the DL) no need to keep staring at "click here you download is ready" along with those annoying envoy ads.....unless you like them so much you wanna keep looking at em. :)

Yeah...I got hit with that one while downloading from MediaFire at the beginning of the year...

Nasty little bugger masked itself as a Windows MS Office installer. Managed to get in even though I stopped the installer three times! Then it did it's thing and kept every program I had available from running (including the standard OS background functions). Locked my comp up good.

'Course, on the downside, I couldn't manage to save everything before I reformatted. Not enough free space on all my portables.

I figure it's generally a good idea to back up your files on a regular basis, if you're in a similar situation.

Hmmmm... sage advice... I have been fortunate so far not to get hit with anything like this, but I will definitely be keeping an eye out now.
