(From Magicbox)
- Sony announced that a summer 2010 firmware update will enable the PS3 to play 3D games (3D effects that make objects pop out of the TV screen) and 3D Blu-ray videos. The effects can be seen by wearing 3D glasses.

Hmm... what do you think?

If it need glasses, why even bother? The technology has been around for decades. Look up Chromatek C3D.

I watched the press conference. It's going to be an entirely new Bluray spec requiring specific "Bluray 3D" players. Ps3 will only require a firmware update to play Blu-ray 3D. There will also begin to be 3D games supposedly. They're also doing an "ESPN 3D" TV Channel.

Technology sure is changing faster than I can keep up. Will the old/new Blu-Ray movies also be in this 3D thing or is it just for PS3 games?

Oh sorry, I forgot about this thread and missed your question. It sounded like it was going to be a new kind of bluray that requires the purchase of a "Bluray 3D" player, but that the ps3 would just need a firmware update to play them. Movies will be in 3d, and games as well, but they didn't really give any details other than a few movies that would be re-released for Bluray 3D (Cloudy with a Chance of meatballs is the only one I remember from the list) and that there would be games in 3d. Supposedly there will also be special 3d televisions, but i'm not sure how that will work.

So assuming I get a PS3/new blu-ray player for this 3-D deal (might just get the PS3 and sell the old player if this would be the case) and from what you've said, playing older blu-ray movies on the new player will NOT make them 3-D?

And because it's most likely going to happen for "milking" purposes, I have a big feeling Advent Children will be re-released for it...

From what they said it would seem that the new players (and the old ps3 with firmware update) would not make non-3d bluray into 3d movies. I'm sure they'll milk it for all it's worth. I'm not too excited about it, but I might try a 3d bluray if they get good reviews. meh.

Actually I've heard of those special TVs. But I don't know that much about it (practically nothing really). But I assumed that the TV itself will have some kind of depth perception so you wouldn't have to wear glasses period. That's what I assumed.

The new TVs come with glasses.

I look forward to the day when 3D doesn't require glasses.

That. Is. Retarded. Who would want to put on glasses whenever they want to watch/play anything on that TV?

At this point I could really care less about keeping up with the latest technology. If they want to start making games and movies in 3D then let them push their ridiculous gimmicks on mindless consumers. Because no matter what people say, no matter how stupid a concept is people are going to rave that this is revolutionary in some way and say if you are in denial of this that you are stupid and being stubborn by not embracing the future. I call complete bullshit on this personally but my opinion won't make a difference. I don't see the point in watching every freaking thing on tv and every movie in 3D because it doesn't add to the experience. It's a gimmick that's been around for decades and has not improved whatsoever and you are still required to wear stupid glasses on your face. I'm astounded that Sony is being so adamant about going the route of 3D with entertainment. But then again Sony is notorious for releasing crappy products and medium formats on consumers.

UMD
Betamax
Mini-Disk

The list goes on and on. I don't see this route going any different for Sony personally. I'm actually amazed they won the format war between HDDVD and Blu-Ray but give it a few more years and Blu-Ray will be a thing of the past once more people adopt the concept of digital distribution for movies and games.

I actually base my first paragraph on what I've personally seen first hand. There are actually people who say that entertainment should go 3D and that if you don't accept this fact you are wrong and therefore you're being too stubborn and want to live in the past. I'm not denying the fact that we are heading into this direction but I still don't agree with it nor do I like it. I've tried 3D, I really have. I just cannot find anything to like about it and it's a nice experience once in a while but it gets boring and causes headaches and eye strain after repeated use.

3-D does add to the experience sometimes. I'm going to take a wild guess here and guess that you haven't seen Avatar. Trust me, you won't get the same experience if you watch that movie in 2-D.

But I do agree that making TV's that only play everything in 3-D is a little ridiculous. Mainly because no matter what you want to do with it, you have to put on those glasses. And also, Sony didn't have anything to do with the Blu-Ray vs. HDDVD because Sony doesn't even own the rights to Blu-Ray. But it was obvious that it was going to win.

Yeah I don't like the idea of having to buy a tv set specifically for 3D. Wasn't it just a few years ago when Microsoft and Sony got millions of people to buy HDTV sets because they praised how High Definition was the future of gaming? Before the 360 and PS3 launched I didn't know a single person with an HDTV set actually. I could understand that route. It does make things more crisp and detailed (which don't matter to me personally) but I can understand the appeal of that. I'm still just confused about 3D and why all of a sudden it's become the latest fad.

IDX

I don't mind it in movies, but I'm still on the fence about the whole gaming thing. I got my HDTV because I've always wanted one and for movies when I got my Blu-Ray player. Of course, I play my games in HD on it (because standard on that TV is extremely fuzzy and dull), but I don't like how the pixels are more noticable. But I don't mind because on a regular tube TV, sometimes I can't read the texts because it's blurry but they're pretty clear in HD.

But just the fact of a TV that requires you to wear those glasses no matter what just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm still wondering why all the fuss over 3D TVs that requires one to wear glasses when watching 3D movies on TV had always required glasses and has been around for 20+ years.

We're fussing that if the TV requires you to wear the glasses all the time. Now that would be stupid.
