Not everyone will like a certain game. If you're a fan of the RE franchise, get it. Don't worry too much about what others think.

But if you liked RE4, you'll like RE5.

I would say rent it first - you will have your own opinion of the game, but this is what I think:

1) I am a HUGE RE4 fan. It was the first one in the series that really 'captured' me and for that I am a bit biased. Also, I loved Leon's sense of humor :P

2) You will only enjoy it if you have a partner to play it with - RE5 is meant to play co-op.

3) The game really isn't that hard, except for the final boss battle, you could probably beat in a couple days. Unless you are a gamer that goes for 100% completion, I would rent it.

4) I don't know what exactly it was about the game, but RE5 lacked the 'zing' that RE4 had to me. It didn't exactly capture my attention the way RE4 did.

All in all, however, you will have to play the game and see for yourself. Hope you like it anyhow :)

As a long time RE fan myself I enjoyed it for what it was. At points I really didn't care much for the game since story parts were being rewritten i.e. Wesker. Anyhow, for the most part...if you played 4 you're sure to enjoy to an extent. Only gripe I had is that the enemies were pretty plain. You mainly just fight infected people and sure boss fights are fun but still nothing too memorable for me. If I think of more I'll write it down.

I dusted it off after a few months to snag some emblems that I hadn't gotten already, and I nearly found myself screaming at the television. I couldn't even run straight. I died to the mirror puzzle.

I consider myself a HUUGE fan of RE4, despite the fact that there

are no actual zombies in it.

However, I just don't like RE5 that much. The controls just don't feel right. Shooting is a chore, especially when you find yourself missing enemies who are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. The partner AI ranges from 'mildly annoying' to 'pants on head retarded,' and the inventory system is shit.

While I absolutely adore the first four RE's, I mostly agree with old Yahtzee on this one. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/624-Resident-Evil-5

Oh, and I forgot my biggest gripe against the game. If you're one of those types who actually want to try to get everything (like me), you'll find yourself farming shit as if you were playing a fucking MMO.

I was going to buy RE5 since it came down to 30 bucks, but then I would have had to buy another controller for co-op with a friend. They came down to 40 bucks which is still lame and would defeat the low game price.

I felt the same way too. I played by myself and I got really annoyed with it (because Sheva kept dying, picking up shit when I was being surrounded by enemies, and her just getting in my way). Then tried Co-op and had much more fun. But after playing it for a little while, it started to grow on me. Sure there are parts of the game that are really boring, but I felt that way too with RE4.

Now I own it. And played it again last night.

A lot of my disliking for this game comes from the fact that Wesker and this Excella what's-her-face are complete Saturday-morning-villain cliches. They are the most generic, predictable, annoying, and overall bland antagonists I think I've ever encountered.

This is definitely my biggest problem with the game, there really is not an ounce of imagination in the writing for either of those villains. And I always get the feeling that Chris just doesn't like Sheva.

But apart from that, it's become one of my favourite games. I just wish I was better at Mercenaries!

Neg
01-14-2010, 03:57 PM
I dunno, I think Chris appreciates Sheva well enough. He's just kinda gruff, in nature, overall?

I still need to replay the original game (I have it on my PS3). I only played parts of it BACK IN THE DAY. So, I can't really say much about his personality OVERALL. That long-lost Redfield cousin from Germany doesn't count (FU, CVX. FU, Kristoph Redfield you ken-doll abomination!)

Yes, I'm a RE4&5 whore. Call me a n00b as is your want~

LOL! Sometimes I think you guys got bugged games. I've never had a problem with Sheva as my AI partner. In fact, I play better with the AI then I do with live players. I've found her to be completely reliable for me.

Probably the only thing I've noticed that many people have said in the past is that she burns through ammo really quick. Other than that, she's never used an herb on me when I didn't need it used.

Sheva totally uses Herbs on me the second she gets them if she or I are missing ANY health whatsoever! She also tends to use her handgun over anything else I give her. And, pick up stuff I don't need.

I think the developers put a "use-weight" on weapons for the game... where smaller less powerful guns were used before stronger ones, which does make sense you do tend to get more handgun ammo than anything else.

But yeah, I have *never* experienced the healing problem you guys have. The only time she heals me is when I'm in Dying Status, or if my health drops to orange status. It's hilarious to hear of these things I've never experienced. :D

I like 5 for having more elements of the main storyline, even if they are cheese. I sorta like cheese in my survival-horror, I guess! Guess you couldn't call 5 survival-horror anymore, but w/e semantics, I love the game, not too worried about what you want to label it.

I love Wesker's speech at the end of the game, and I was totally onboard til he started calling himself a god. Maybe I'm just too self-conscious to think of my self in those terms. I love the natural selection bent of it, though.

Separate so much chaff~

Arigeitsu159

Not only am I disappointed in the game, but I'm also disappointed that I just can't get past some of these setbacks and enjoy it. Wesker and Excella's corny dialogue really takes from a lot of the believability (after all, I thought realism was something they were going for; apparently not). However, I realize this is a game, not a movie, so I guess I can't be too disappointed, as the gameplay does have a lot to offer. As I said, it's very similar to RE4 in almost every way; it truly is the ideal sequel to that game, and now I understand why. It's just annoying that a lot of the story aspects won't make much sense to those who didn't play the first three titles, and then when you have, you're appalled to see Wesker turn into a cackling comic book villain with the most hackneyed personality in history, not to mention I saw every single one of his lines coming (once I realized he was so cliched). Even the original B-movie-quality game dialogue on the PSX was more tolerable than this. Ah well, I really just need to get over it. Apparently I misinterpreted what this game was going to be, so it's probably my own fault I don't like it, and I should be judging it on its own merits, not comparing it to the gamecube remake of RE1, which is my all-time favorite RE title. Hopefully my views will change with time; it is nice to fight against soldier enemies who actually use guns, not medieval crossbows this time around :D

Maybe your expectations are just too high? It's not like your marrying the game. Enjoy it for what it is. There are way worse games out there. Plus, as the title indicates, it's "Resident Evil 5"... if you haven't played any of the past games, or at least researched backstory, you deserve not to know what's going on.

Not sure how often it occurs, but if you fight Wesker long enough, he ends up saying something that causes Chris/Sheva to say some pretty funny stuff. I can't remember the exact dialogue, but I found it kinda cool how they managed to place that kind of stuff in the middle of a battle. Most games don't do that (unless it's an RPG).
