There's no definite answer. Some people consider the birth of anime as the propaganda cartoons of WWII Japan. It's all up to the viewer and how he sees it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't it start with Astro Boy? My mom used to watch that show so it probably started in the 60s.

The earliest anime I know of was Astro Boy, which my parents used to watch when they were *wee* young ones. I can't imagine my parents as kids sitting in front of the T.V. watching cartoons. They're so...mature...now.

Yeah, it's weird picturing your parents as little kids watching cartoons.

One time I was in a bookstore and I showed my mom an Astro Boy manga and asked "Isn't this the show you used to watch when you were little?" She started singing the Astro Boy theme song in the middle of the bookstore.

Yeah those paintings were Japanese art which were radically different from anime today. I own a book on East Asian art and believe me the two are nothing alike.

I can't relate that to anything, can you?
