I actually saw an old thread about this a moment ago in a different area of the forum which dated back to 2007. So, I've decided to help people down this path of righteousness! A lot of this particular genre, for me at least, was the spawn of contemporary orchestrated pieces used in modern film. Much of the music is epic, deep, and very cinematic. You could build hundreds of movies based on the music alone! So, I figured I'd share a few artists/composers whom some may, or may not know, which I admire in this musical genre:

Immediate Music: Google will literally explain this entire group. All I can say, is they're amazing. Especially check out their new album, Trailerhead.

Globus: An off-shoot group formed by Immediate Music, they released one album, Epicon, but it was a good listen nonetheless.

Hans Zimmer*: A flagship composer in the contemporary film industry, any piece he's composed should be fine.

Harry Gregson-Williams*: Very notable composer, done many film score's, a personal favorite being the score for "Man on Fire"

Klaus Badelt: Composed the score for Pirates of the Caribbean, no doubt a timeless score.

James Newton Howard: Yet another interesting composer to admire, a favorite from him is the "Lady in the Water" soundtrack.

One of the most "epic" bands in my opinion is Muse. Everything about them is insane. The piano can get so intense in some of the songs and they also have very deep lyrics.
