OK, I hate this song. I cannot express how much I hate this damn song. I have to hear it all the time and everyone has to put some random cutesy excerpt from this song in their fucking facebook status at least once a week. So I'm going to take this fucking song apart. I'm breaking it, destroying it. Here we go.

Owl City
Fireflies
-----
Verse 1

"You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep. Cause they'd fill the open air and leave tear drops everywhere. You'd think me rude but I would just stand and stare."

-Literal Translation and Response: Apparently he thinks we'd be shocked it ten million fireflies lit the entire planet every time he attempted to sleep. This would be true for several reasons. One, I'm fairly certain the insect world could give two shits about this particular gentleman and two, I know a place where you can see about 300 fireflies all at the same time glowing in synch. It covers a small area. 10 million fireflies would not even cover a state let alone the world. MAYBE a city. Maybe.

Also, I'm not sure if the lead singer is aware of this but fireflies, like many other insects don't have fucking tear ducts. They can't cry and even if they could they do not experience emotion like other animals.

And no, I wouldn't think it's rude if you were staring. You're probably dazed because you're attempting to sleep and I'd be stunned to if a city's supply of dim bulbs lit the entire planet.

-Possible Translation: I've found every theory to fireflies representing his fans to his ex's to his dreams. Only thing I couldn't find was verification. I even sent an email to Owl City's PR person and got nothing back. I wrote Paul Van Dyk's PR person once about his inspiration for For an Angel and I got a response in two hours. You know the different between Owl City and Paul Van Dyk? Paul Van Dyk is fucking famous.

I'm going to go with my theory which is random thoughts. If anything, this song was the clear work of someone dealing with ADD on a level a 9 year old Bakugon fanatic could only relate too. So he's basically attempting to say that we wouldn't know what it's like to try and fall asleep while thought after thought run through your head. Really? Yes, no one's ever stayed up conflicted before.

The whole filling the open are and crying all over the place I could only imagine would be that person's reaction to some of the thought's going through his head which leads me to believe that this person has a mind like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs or possibly even the guy from Cell so note, when inviting him to see your horse do NOT let him bring sharp sheets of glass.

I guess the last part is him explaining that he'd have no choice but to watch as his crazy, perverse thoughts flood your mind till blood pours from your nose thick as soup as you collapse to the ground, a defeated husk.

Verse 2

"Cause I'd get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs as they tried to teach me how to dance. A foxtrot above my head. A sock-hop beneath my bed. The disco ball is just hanging by a thread."

-Literal Translation and Response: The only thing I can gather from the first line is that he has so many insects flooding him that these special telepathic insects are working in legion to manipulate his arms and legs for the soul purpose of making him a spaz.

They are also holding outdated dances over his head to torment him as well as under his bed, which indicated that even though he mentioned the open air, we are now apparently in his bedroom. Why not.

Oh, and his cheap novelty disco ball in his bedroom is attached to the ceiling with a string just like everyone else who's even bought one from Spensor's Gifts.

-Possible Translation: If we're still looking at lightning bugs as passing thoughts we could say that they're constantly grabbing a hold of his attention making him toss and turn in bed, denying his ability to comfortably rest.

The foxtrot in his head could be another clue to these being random thoughts as well as the sockhop on being a reference to getting comfortable but can't.

The disco ball? It's a stretch but it may be a reference to his sanity. Who knows. He's SERIOUSLY reaching at this point of the song and we're only half way through.

Verse 3

"Leave my door open just a crack 'cause I feel like such an insomniac. Why do I tire of counting sheep when I'm far too tired to fall asleep. To ten million fireflies, I'm weird cause I hate goodbyes. I got misty eyes as they said farewell. But I'll know where several are, if my dreams get real bizarre, cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar."

-Literal Translation and Response: First off, why would you want more distractions when you have trouble falling asleep already. That's enough out of you young man, no be a big boy, close your door and go to bed.

And for the record you tired of counting sheep before falling asleep because, as I said, you have severe ADD and can't focus long enough for it to be effective.

Also, one, fireflies do not think anything's weird so likewise they also probably don't get misty eyed because, as I mentioned earlier, they haven't the goddamn tear ducts.

Oh, and as for your constant bitching about the fireflies? It may be because you're holding their family hostage in a jar. That could be why they're not leaving you alone.

-Possible Translation: AGAIN, going back to the flies being his thoughts, this could indicate that he needs some sort of distraction to be able to sleep while being bombarded with stray thoughts the same way I have to have something in my room make noise for me to fall asleep.

I made fun of it before but the sheep line could seriously be him having such a low attention span that he gets side tracked and bored of sheep counting before it does anything effect to him.

The whole goodbye thing could be him trying to fall asleep but saddened because he couldn't make sense of his thoughts or left things unfinished. Keeping them in a jar could mean anything from keeping a journal to keeping momentos to burying their bodies in a special place in his backyard. (What? It makes sense to certain Clevelanders.)

Chorus

"I'd like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns, slowly. It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'cause everything is never as it seems."

-Literal Translation and Response: As much as I'd like to believe it (no pun intended), you can't make yourself believe anything. Unless you're a Christian. They're crazy like that.

Also, it IS hard to say it because it's a lie. If you're mind would rather be awake when you're asleep it wouldn't have knocked your dumb ass out.

The last bit about nothing being as it seems? Who knows. I guess the song wasn't confusing enough so he wanted to leave a little cryptic poo stuck on the end. It's the equivalent of unwrapping a new pair of slippers and walking around indoors all day and never leaving the house only to take them off before bed and find shit on the top of them.

-Possible Translation: I think the Earth part is him wishing that there was more time to spend sleeping and dicking around with his thoughts. That's the bit that the little emo girls swoon for. The guy lost in his thoughts so much so he doesn't have enough time for all of them.

It almost seems like he can't decide whether being up with his thoughts is as good and enjoyable as his dreams because he can't interpret either properly. Or, it also seems like he shot out a clever rhyming cryptic one liner out of his ass and couldn't resist using it several times in a song.

--------

Final Synopsis: It's a song about him being scatter brained and using cutesy "aww" words to make it marketable. This is probably the same type of shpeel he tells a girl after fucking her and leaving her the next day. The whole, "I'm too conflicted to focus on one thing." It's a premise about as deep as a thimble about a premise as romantic as a colonoscopy marketed to impressionable girls. That's all this is. The sooner we stop blowing this fucking song out of proportion the sooner we can get back to our lives.

If you like this song but would actually like something with some depth and meaning, here's some songs with similar vibes that have a bit more depth to them:

David Bowie - Starman
Church - Under the Milky Way
Placebo - Running up that Hill
Alphaville - Forever Young

They all have that kind of weird atmospheric tone while having complex metaphors mixed with every day thoughts. The only difference is they're referencing more than something that can be fixed with a few Benadryl.

lol, eleni. My friend at work tries to get me to listen to all this weird indy rock, and when I actually listen to the lyrics, half the time they are so stupid I wish I hadn't.

song rotation thread

that is a good story jakob those songs must be pretty silly if you often think that the lyrics are very silly

I guess so, duo. I try to not listen to silly songs unless they are meant to be silly, but sometimes I fail.

I heard that Fireflies song for the first time the other day, I thought it was okay. It's like Postal Service lite or something.
