Everyone knows about gameshark codes that are used to cheat games and give you, unlimited health, items, magic..etc. Therefore hex coding is hated by most gamers who believe it is simply a platform for making a game simple. and i am talking about psx games not pc modding.

I myself am a massive fan of the final fantasy series. FF7 holds a special place for me as it was the first one which i played through, since then i have gone through the series (except for 11 and i finished playing X-2 after the opening scene).

I am now back playing final fantasy 7 once more, however this time i have made the game more interesting for myself. I learned how to write gameshark codes and started modifying things which i believe should be part of the game and other things simply for fun.

My initial idea was to create a "Sephiroth Playthrough" where you would go through the entire story as sephiroth. Creating this code has taken me over a year as there were many areas which i overlooked and the entire code is over 400 lines of individual code now.

Along the way i have stumbled upon many codes which i have found amazing and useful. For instance with a simple code enabled you can rematch the weapons, fight them as many times as you like. you can create your own materia (a little bit more tricky but exciting).

I created a Holy materia or "white" as it was never put in the game as a magic, i gave it the graphic of aero which don corneo's pet "raps" uses on you in wutai (liked the graphic so ran with it).

I also created a materia which i called "black" its action magic i named Meteo (would have liked to call it meteor but the games RAM didn't allow it). The interesting thing about the black materia which i created was that i gave it the ability to break the 9999 damage limit. The graphic was simply that of comet but its power was amazing. i made it consume 700 mp so as not to over use it, and it is a lot more satisfying than sitting through knights of round which can start to become repetitive at times.

Is anyone interested in customising FF7 so that you can play through it as ur own style game? have aeris or sephiroth in your party? I do not understand why most people hate coding. Once you have learned the basics you will be able to modify anything the way you want to!

In FF8 i made my party consist of only PuPu as i played through the game, watching as a little blue alien took on ultimecia (and lost, i could only attack and use magic. everything else froze the game).

Sorry for writing such a long post. But i hope some people are a little open minded to changing what you like to make a classic game something that is really yours.

I do have one question though,

Does anybody know if sephiroths black cape has a name?
i have named it "SOLDIER's Testament" which is a bit crap. if it had an actual name i would love to use it in my line of code.

Thank you,
Cheema

Ah, you are aware that the 'Sephiroth Patch' for the PC version was made years ago, and is available for download on the Qhimm Forums? (I've never tried it though, so I have no idea how stable it is).

Still, about the only thing I've hacked in FFVII (the PC version, not the PSX version due to lacking a suitable cheat device - Gamesharks aren't available in Australia), is I used a save file trainer to hack Aeris back into the party in disc 2 and 3, more for a change of pace than anything. Great fun, especially when her presence in certain story sequences causes the game to crash. :p

EDIT: Never mind, I'm sorry, I didn't notice you were referring to modding the PSX version with a Gameshark. :D

I am also from Australia, I live in Sydney. I am well aware of the patches and such at qhwimm forums (which by the way offers much of the kernel information required to write amazing hex codes).

The PC version does not pay the same amount of details to music and such. The original psx version feels much more gratifying.

I have played through the PC patch, and it is much more than you could ever to with the psx version (for example the sephiroth sprite can only be used in certain areas of the psx version as it is not loaded by the game until a certain point) however i am just a bigger fan of the psx version.

I am well aware of the lack of cheat devices in our country. I mostly use my PSP to play psx games or my xbox or even PC sometimes haha. Basically as the emulators carry cheat code capabilities.

And i know what you are saying about aeris stuffing up parts of the story hahaha. I ran into that very early when i started coding. there are ways around it though. you need someone else to come in for her when they need someone to talk. because she obviously has nothing to say after the end of disc one!

When I first started gaming I had a gameshark for the psx. That thing was a beast, I don't think I ever used it for FF, but my personal favorite rpg Legend of Legaia I did when I replayed it. Stuff like hitting R2 gave you 999 health, and at the start of the game that was a HUGE boost.

It's fun to play around with (I lost/threw it away years ago), but to me it started to take the feeling out of the game. As for a game like FFVII which I, and you too from what it sounds like, have played through multiple times would be fun to change certain things like you mentioned. But there have been coders on Socom: Combined Assault for a couple years, and it is extremely annoying. Extremely.

Offline coding: Thumbs up!
Online coding: Thumbs the fuck down.

Online coding is not acceptable. I myself have never coded an online game. The most that i have done in that respect was to re-code a video from online to make it look different. The actual gameplay was never affected.

However when you have played something through a number of times and begin to play with code it gives the game a new life. then after you get sick of your coded game you can go back and play it in the original format again. It gives a classic game some diversity, which is controlled by the coder.

If this is something that people would be willing to accept i would happily share codes which i have created and take on suggestions for codes which you would like to see created for the game.

If you would suggest me make a code please keep in mind that codes are simply changing a value to another for some cool effects. I would not be able to make cloud look like squall or anything haha.
