This is a topic that never fails to bring a smile to my face. What are some of the ways you pronunce the names of some of the major characters in FF games. There seem to be countless intepretations, and just about anyone could be right here. Here are a few of my ideas....

Rydia: Ruh-dee-uh
Celes: Sull-less (like Celeste without the "tuh", basically)
Locke: Lock
Aeris: Air-iss
Seifer: Sife-err (emphasis on the r)
Rinoa: Ruh-no-uh
Zidane: Zuh-dane (like great dane)
Vivi: Vee-Vee

And, here's one that's been greatly debated in the FFX forum....
Tidus: ty-dus

Well, those are mine. Feel free to show your pronunciation of any character's name, not just the ones I've done here....

Hmmm...

FF4
Rydia - Rid-E-a
Cecil - Cecil...so yeah
bah...all the others are pretty much self explanitory like Cecil...

FF5
Lenna - Lee-nu
Galuf - Gal-off (hehe...that is rather humorus to a sick mind)
Frais - Da-Cross-Dresses

VI
Gau - Gu-ow
Sabin - Sa-bin
Cyan - like the color
Celles - Cell-less
Umaro - Ooo-Mar-Oh

FFVII
Aeris - Air-is

I'll be skipping VIII

IX
Zidane - Zid-A-n

Bah...I'll leave it at that cause I'm lazy...

<font color=red face="comic sans ms">Hmm... I'll do some...

Tifa: Tiffa
Aeris: Air - ees
Yuffie: Yuff - ee
Selphie: Sell - fee
Seifer: Sie - fur
Rinoa: Rinn - oh - ah
Edea: Ee - dee - ah
Quistis: Kwis - tis
Quina: Quee - na
Eiko: Eye - ko

I think for most of the other characters (in FF7-9 at least) it can be commonly agreed on how to pronounce their names. ;)

FF4:

Most names are real ones (Cecil, Rosa, etc.)

Rydia is actually the Japanese spelling of the English name "Lydia," so I'm pretty sure the correct pronounciation is "RIH-dee-uh."

I cannot say "FuSoYa" without doing a horribly stereotypical Japanese accent, like some kind of cliched martial artist exclamation. "Foo-soh-yaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!" *breaks wooden board with forehead.*

FF5:

Reina: Like the Spanish word for "Queen." "Rey-EE-nah."
Faris: "FAR-iss."
Galuf: "Guh-LOOF."

FF6:

Locke: Like the English philosopher, John Locke. "Lock."
Celes: It should probably be pronounced like the name "Celeste," but I say "SEEL-ess."

FF7:

Aeris: Ey (like in "hey")-ris. Although the first time I played FF7 I thought it was pronounced "Iris," which would have been a good pun considering she was a flower merchant.

FF8:

Seifer: Like the word "cypher."
Quistis: "KWISS-tiss."
Rinoa: "rih-NOH-ah."
Edea: Like the Spanish word for "idea." "ee-DEY-ah."

Haven't played FF9 yet.

FF10:

Tidus: Tee-dus. Please don't hate me for it. :p

In an interview with Tidus's voice actor though it was pronounced Tee-dus. That's why Fujin said it was like that :). I too pronounce it Tee-dus after seeing that. I basically agree with every other pronunciation.

Oh....well I don't really make a big deal out of names, but I don't see why square doesn't jut put little pronounciation things in their books with the games....but with voice acting now.....I guess they don't need to.

Dr. Lucien Sanchez

Yeah, i've heard that interview, but the blokes' being a twat.

It is no way Tee-dus.
Tidus is like linking the water theme to his name. (if you haven't got it already, hopefully i'm not being patronizing, if I am ignore me)

They say Er-Vine because it's a real name. You can look it up in a baby name book if you don't believe me. :p

But it is funny how people will get defensive about their pronunciations. We really have no way of knowing any of these for sure. Even the voice actor who pronunced the name "Tee-dus" didn't seem to have checked with the other voice actors first-in the same interview, the actress for Yuna pronounces it "Ty-dus". I wish Square would put up a pronounciation chart so we could all check and see how many you got right.

Oh, and for some additional fun, try arguing how to pronounce a lot of the towns with other people. I think there's more discrepancy on that then on the names of the characters....

Hehe, that's totally true! Another thing is that some of my friends had their worlds turned upside-down when they found out CHOCOBO was pronounced "CHOE-ko-bow" (with all long o's). :D :D

Yeah, Tidus is a name that people seem to dissagree on most peacefully...

MogKnight
09-11-2002, 04:01 AM
Well, lets go through the word "Tidus"

As most people might look at say, they would say "Tie-Dus", Squaresoft and folks say it as "Tid-dus" or "Tee-dus"

If we look at the word "Tidus", we see two main parts of it, Tid being the first, Us being the second.

Tid then Us.

Now, if we look at the word 'Titus", sort of like the show on Fox, Titus can be pronounced as "Tie-dus" or "Tie-dis" We also see two main parts to this, Ti and Tus.

Ti then Tus.

Most of us confuse Tidus and Titus. Titus is a name that has existed for quite awhile, since the Roman Emperor Titus Flavius.

All the while, Tidus is a very different word. You can type in Tidus back in the year 1997 and you won't find any major hits at all. The word Tidus came from the word Tide, though you could get Titus right out of it... but I guess Squaresoft just didn't want to use the name Titus because it sounds too common.

I could say that the correct saying is "Tee-Dus" but thats for Squaresoft to decide.

Actually, Tidus is an Okinawan word. You may not find many non-FFX uses of it if you spell it "T-I-D-U-S," but if you spell it using the Japanese alphabet you should find something. :)
