Thanks for the upload. I'm a bit confused by the whole spectral analysis process so can anyone please confirm that this is indeed a lossless rip? My download got suspended due to a connection reset and those few cues I was able to extract showed a cut-off at around 20khz. Since it'd take forever for me to grab this all over again, I was hoping someone here could check it for lossless authenticity. Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, a lossy file cuts off around 16khz, it doesn't reach 20khz.

Pretty much all of my lossless albums go way beyond 20KHZ in the analysis. 20KHZ is where 320kbps rips are typically at about, to my knowledge. But like I said, I'm not entirely sure if I know how this analysis works.

You guys are lucky because some of you already have the CD's.
Mine has been order and shipped but will only come in the next week hopefully. One of the many disadvantages when you live outside of U.S. :whatever:

Give the music a chance and leave the technical analysis details aside, and your ears will be the one and only you can trust.
The music will speak for itself.

By using Abobe Audition, Back to the Future is an authentic lossless rip. It doesn't cut off at 20,000. It goes all the way pass 21,000 and beyond.

Piano

Your light on your screen is too low, it's for this reason you thought there is a cut-off.

Zoomed now:

There is no blocky and you can clearly see there is no cut-off.

Okay then it seems I sure don't know how this stuff works. Thanks for the report!

I should add the following:

It's ENTIRELY possible to force certain MP3 encoders to encode all frequencies up to 22khz. They just don't do it by default.

Seeing frequencies that go higher than 16 is *NOT* a foolproof way of determining a lossless rip. It works 95% of the time, but it's not a certainty.

Conversely, seeing a cutoff at 16khz (or whatever) is *NOT* a foolproof way of determining a LOSSY rip. Some recordings (older recordings mastered from analogue tape, vinyl, or shellac records, or from earlier digital recordings, for instance).

These methods can help you. But the best way to find out is to use your EARS.

If your EARS don't tell you whether it's lossless or not... then you can stop worrying right away because you just don't need lossless.

As I have said before, people need to stop judging audio quality by looking at spectral analysis, and start listening to it with those large vaguely-sattelite-dish-like things on the sides of their heads. ;)

Sirusjr
11-29-2009, 07:43 PM
The methods here used to determine lossless don't 100% deal with the cut-off but also deal with the lack of blocky stuff in the zoomed in part of the spectral analysis. Although otherwise I agree with you.

Piano
11-29-2009, 07:54 PM
Yep but you don't know if it's the recording who is bad, or if it's a mp3 transcoded. So it's always better checked with spectral, anyway there is not just the cut-off for noticed a transcode.

tangotreats
11-29-2009, 08:36 PM
No, there are other ways too - none of them are foolproof and none of them can offer conclusive results. ;)

I didn't say I had them. I was quoting the user who offered them, and basically saying "Please share 'em!". I want them as much as you, but I prefer mp3 format over lossless. But if they're in lossless, I can always convert them.

Can someone put up BTTF 2 in lossless if that ever got an official release? I'm asking 4 the expanded version, not original. And in something unrelated, can someone upload a lossless version of the La-La Land expanded Batkman The Movie 1966? I know an mp3 of it is here, but I very strongly prefer lossless for both.

BTTF (2 CD) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OURJTJ9R)Anyone have problems with this? Getting errors on trying to play any tracks and the file extensions all read ".m4a".

7zip indicates no errors withe the download. I'd try re-download though with a .m4a extension I assume this isn't FLAC anyway?

EDIT - OK think I figured it out, it's ALAC (People actually use that? ;)), not FLAC. Plays fine in iTunes, so obviously I must be missing the foobar2000 decoder.

Amanda

m4a is just a different format. Media player hates it. You'd have to convert it to a compatible format. But i dunno if m4a is lossless? I usually convert them to mp3 320. ????

All is well again, using foobar2000? You need this;

No bother, I'm only used to converting as FLAC (Lossless) -> M4A (Lossy) myself :) Apple uses M4A for both AAC and ALAC apparently. Anyway, decoder installed, can convert ALAC to FLAC and anything else I want now, thanks.

Quick question about the content here. Says this is the complete score, plus alternates. I have listened to the previous bootleg version of this score (with 17 tracks), which also included the 2 score pieces from the song album, including the long Overture, which doesn't appear to be listed on the Intrada version. Is that Overture music included under another title, or maybe just broken up amidst other cues?

All the Overture was, was re-recorded material from the score and different cues strung together. That is why it was not included. The 17 track boot was far from complete and not only that had very crappy sound quality for the most part.

The Intrada version is the most 100% complete version out there with great stellar sound. Support the label and buy the physical CD itself. I do believe Intrada still has the score in stock.
