I love Motoaki Takenouchi's music, so I decided to upload all I have and post it together here, in one place. Some of these are rather difficult to find, so I hope you enjoy them. They are mostly mp3 VBR V0, but a couple are V2. I've recently been searching for missing track titles, and have added them for Shining Wisdom, Shining Force CD, Sword of Hajya, and Gungriffon. I believe the only ones without correct titles are Double Moon Densetsu and Final Conflict which I can't really find enough info on. Enjoy!

Excellent post! Takenouchi is one of my favourites too - such effortless musicality. Shame he doesn't seem to be composing for videogames anymore (or at all?).

Shining Force CD is giving me a real Mario Galaxy vibe. The main themes resemble each other very closely.. I wonder if Mahito Yokota had this in mind? Then again.. I might just have have a strange fixation with that melodic shape - it also reminds me of the Cosmic Key theme in Conti's Masters of the Universe and the 'Hallelujah' refrain from Ben-Hur :)

Looking forward to trying Gungriffon and Double Moon. Thanks!

So, i'm still looking for this one:

SD Gundam Over Galaxian (PlayStation)

Jessie tried to rip the .da files from the .iso of the game itself, and so did I, but with no luck. It looks like this game is disgustingly rare (as in it appears in almost no lists of PS1 games) If anyone has this or finds it somewhere, I would love it.

If you haven't listened to Takenouchi before, I would definitely start with the Shining Force II OST. I also really enjoy Jewel Master, Shining Wisdom, and the SF2 Suite, of course. The game gear games have great music, as well, and is copied in the Shining Force CD game.

I don't get it. I've looked at this wikipedia page before, are you attempting to respond to me asking if anyone knew of anything else he has done? If you notice the OP, I have everything from that page except for E.V.O (where he only arranged), SD Gundam over Galaxian, and the three albums in "other." I can't see what the wikipedia page is going to give me...

@lens

I'll upload a track with the best conversion I can get. The quality is really bad, I don't get it. I'm using audacity, and I tried to use Goldwave to cut out some frequencies that it seemed were the noise, but I couldn't make it sound too great.

Could it be that the sampling rate is causing problems? If you post one of the .da files as is from the iso (or is that not possible?) I'll have a mess around with it. I don't know much when it comes to ripping psx, but you've got me very curious now.

May I add the soundtrack release for Landstalker? You get some nice suites of the game music, with enhancements to the midi, and the first two tracks are arrangements.

There's love here! I just haven't downloaded yet. At some point I'll be grabbing pretty much everything in the thread :)

Great quote btw VyseLegend! Shining Wisdom has always looked very appealing to me being an action rpg. I'm assuming music plays an important role in the game.. Is it at all Zelda-ish?

Oh, cool!! I didn't know there was an official release for that one, yay! That art looks a LOT more like shining force art than the box art for the genesis. I'm getting this--Would you mind if I added the link to the OP?

Well, it is an action RPG. It feels really different than zelda. I remember you get some weird little car eventually, but its been quite a while. It has some beastly puzzles in it, but I don't remember the battles being very difficult. I still have the disc for this one.

Personally, my favorite "shining" game for the saturn was "Shining the Holy Ark" which was a dungeon crawler, but that one had music by Motoi Sakuraba (Jessie has it (Thread 57031) if you want it), not Takenouchi.

Please do. The cover art for the American and European releases is hideous (obviously good enough to make me buy the game though!). I think you'll enjoy this one - the music works pretty well in suite form, and 'Seeking Treasure' benefits from the added timp hits.

Sadly I never had a Saturn, even though I fantasised about getting one for years and followed many of the game releases. Had to remain content with my Megadrive untill the N64 came along. Now that I'm getting back into retro stuff I may well pick one up.

One more to add to the collection:

http://uploadmirrors.com/download/ZIRTXZCE/Symphonic

This is an arrangement of the music from Shining Force CD. It's synthesised orchestral, but the first track features the following real instruments: 2 violins, viola, cello, flute, trumpet, horn and trombone.

*edit* VGMdb proves me wrong. Well, that's exciting. I'll add that to the OP tonight! Thanks!

(if you haven't listened to the original game gear versions of SF Gaiden, which is where the Shining Force CD music comes from, I like them a lot)

*edit* UPDATE

Shining Wisdom Arranged Album now in OP. I also changed the album art for the Saturn rip of Shining Wisdom to the box art of the game. It's a little large, but all the other ones looked terrible. There are great scans of the boxart of all of the older shining games at Shining Force Central (http://www.shiningforcecentral.com/artwork.php?m=0&g=8) for those who want them.

Here's a thread I can get behind 8) he's one of my favourite video game composers, my second most listened to artist on last FM behind hayato matsuo (at the moment.) I'm responsible for much of the information on the wikipedia article, so if there's anything incorrect on it, be sure that i catch hell :p

A few things I'd like to mention:

Gamera: Gyaosu Gekimetsu Sakusen (SNES) -- there's currently no complete SPC rip of this released, however the last time I spoke to KungFuFurby on snesmusic, he said he had a finished rip that just needed tagging or something like that. It'll appear on snesmusic eventually, just a question of when... you could try e-mailing him and asking him to get his arse in gear and release it. The more people who ask for it, the more likely it'll appear. Shame the sound quality on his SNES soundtracks is complete ass, because all the ideas are there musically.

SD Gundam Over Galaxian (PlayStation) -- Like you guys, I downloaded an ISO of this a couple of years back, though I managed to rip the redbook audio. I also checked for the presense of XA and sequenced music but I couldn't find any, so knock-on-wood this should be the entire OST (though really it needs someone who's familiar with the game to verify.) The tracknames/tags are likely garbage though as they're based off of the CDA filenames.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZHT4812H

Jessie tried to rip the .da files from the .iso of the game itself, and so did I, but with no luck.

Yeah, you'd probably need CD Mage for that, for some reason I don't think you can just drag them off the CD. Or you could just open the entire ISO in Goldwave or something and manually trim the chunks of audio data, which is what I did for this because the track start times were all messed up - not a lot of fun, but doable if it's your only option. Should be ok if you make sure opened as 16bit 44.1KHz PCM. Might be helpful with other ISOs you find that give you trouble~

Shining Wisdom rip -- I was working on tags for the SSF set of this but I never finished since there were some I couldn't identify (I was using names from the game rather than the names from the arranged CD.)

Shining CD -- is your rip good quality? The one I have has clicks and pops all over it, and also doesn't have tags. Let me know so I know whether or not I should download :)

Has Takenouchi done anything recently?

The most recent thing he's done that I'm aware of (or is common knowledge) is composition and arrangement of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoJ_rCp9j_g). Nice tune :) other than that though, no idea. He may still be freelancing, though maybe not as a game musician.... who knows, his homepage has been dead as a dodo for many years.

Shining Wisdom provided me with my favorite quote of all time:

"Information is not knowledge; knowledge is not wisdom; wisdom is not truth; truth is not duty; duty is not love; love is not music; music is...the best!"

Cosmic Distortion! Irregular Time! Polyrhythm! FLASHING KEYBOARD SOLO! WILDLY DISTORTED GUITAR! Uninterrupted flow of melody!

so great.

So, I got unreasonably excited when I found the gungriffon arranged album (THANK YOU Goniochromism)

Aye, you have no idea how excited I was when I found it. It's also one of my favourite soundtracks of his, along with Shining Wisdom, Jewel Master and Granhistoria. Carl at slightlydark was who originally found it on jp2p.

Stuff you're missing -- tracks from shinji hosoe's omnibus albums on Troubadour (TOURS, Great Wall, GTR, which you should have now), and his tune on the Cho Aniki Show II CD/compilation/thing (http://vgmdb.net/album/6176), called "Saw-kwa Dance". It isn't clear whether this is from a Cho Aniki game (which might mean he composed for one at some point) or if it's a one-off track unique to this CD and not actually from a game.

Also, Symphonic Synth Suite "4.6 Billion Year Story" -The Theory of Evolution- (http://vgmdb.net/album/1495) - which was an arranged CD for the PC98 version of the game, rather than the SNES one you linked. I never checked both discs out so the music between the two may be different.

Finally, I have a request -- if you could find a rip of this incredibly rare release (http://vgmdb.net/album/10422), that would be spectacular. I have had no joy. It's the only thing he's worked on that I haven't been able to locate.

How was the quality of yours? I got the CDDA files to open in Audacity, but they sounded like total garbage. At first I thought there was just noise, but then I realized all of the samples sounded distorted as well.

These files come from a version of the game I downloaded. They are 192kb mp3 and sound terrific. The track titles are only the title of the game and track number, however. I don't really pull this out much to listen to it, as I prefer the game gear versions for most of the tracks.

I really like Syvalion, Sword Maniac, Super Hockey '94, Tengai Makyou Kabuki Itto Ryoudan, Master of Monsters Neo Generation and Let's Smash (ripped in USF not too long ago :)), as well as his tracks on the trobadour compilations, which are just ridiculous. Basically all his older progressive/fusion-style stuff. Most probably know him for Ogre Battle, Front Mission 3 and Final Fantasy XII though, which also have their moments.

Well, you can check in the set I uploaded; perfect as far as I can tell. I'm not sure why you didn't have any joy with Audacity. You could try just opening the entire ISO in Audacity instead, though some audio editors are a bit iffy about opening non-audio files.

Wait, there are two arranged versions, or just the two games?

Both, and it seems like one of the arranged albums is for the PC98 game while the other is for the Super Nintendo version. It is confusing. Additionally, Sugiyama composed the music in the original PC98 version, while Takenouchi arranged/programmed the tunes for the SNES version, as well as writing some new tunes as well... never did investigate that fully though.

vbr -0 I think for both, it has been a while.
Edit: Before I forget, the Originalname is "Land Stalker" for the franchise according the romanji translation on the Original Soundtrack, not Landstalker and/or LandStalker ;)

This is great. Thanks! :)

The 4.6 billion year synth suite is in the OP (at the very bottom, but Goniochromism says this is the arrangement from the SNES game and that there is another one from the PC-98 version. jakob.nelson: sort of interesting - found a log of the convo i had in #usf when i was fighting with SD gundam over galaxian a couple of years back. now i remember it giving me heaps of trouble as well :D

http://cereal.rutgers.edu/~agashlin/usflog/index.cgi?2007-11_2007-11-14

i was just looking inside the ISO again today, the .str files in the MOVIE directory piqued my interest. it's possible those also have audio... no guarantee though. gonna look into it.

EDIT: tried XA extraction with vgmtoolbox but it didn't turn up anything with the str files... i can only assume that means they don't have any audio. really what it needs is someone familiar with the game.

I might have seen that log, lol, that's totally it... there is an irc conversation from hcs that is one of the only results that come up for SD Gundam over Galaxian on google, and that's the one it was. I can upload a flac set of the Landstalker gamerip (in-game music) but I can't help you with the arranged version, promo, or supplement. Lucy gave me the Promo and supplement CD rips (see page 2 of this thread) and Lens_of_Truth posted the landstalker stuff, so those mp3s are the only versions I have. Let me know if you're interested in a flac set and i'll do it for the game rip.

(Also, calling it the "original flac" doesn't really make sense as the file format was not originally FLAC, but redbook CD audio or midi for the genesis/md)

Update:

Added, for the sake of completeness, Symphonic Suite: 4.6 Billion Year Story ~ The Theory of Evolution. This album is a synth arrangement of the music from the NEC PC-98 game, whereas the other album with a similar name posted previously here is from the SNES/Super Famicom music.

These 4.6 Billion Year albums haven't really caught my attention in the past, but having listened to more Koichi Sugiyama, it's interesting to hear the two very different styles of the the composers involved. For example, track fourteen (japanese title) is very exemplary of the Takenouchi Style, whereas track seventeen is very much Sugiyama. I hope you enjoy it, and thanks again to Acid Beast for this one.

Update:

Track titles added for Shining Wisdom Gamerip, Shining Force CD, and Shining Force Gaiden II: The Sword of Hajya. After having downloaded a couple versions of the game and looking online for more info, I'm not entirely convinced that Takenouchi actually did the music for Road Blaster FX (Road Avenger). Supposedly the psx version is a direct port of the LD game. I'm going to see if someone can help me rip it or if I can manage to figure it out.

Edit: Jessie helped me extract the audio, and here is the result!

http://rapidshare.com/files/391961263/RoadBlaster.zip

There are only seven tracks, and I'll tell you why. The game is basically one big video, and the sound effects are not separate as they are all mostly predestined, so all of the tracks not present in this mp3 set were VERY CONTAMINATED with sound effects and are unusable. This is the best we're getting, but honestly this is one of Takenouchi's weakest efforts, so I don't mind it being so small.

Actually, I think you're right. Unless those youtube videos you linked have the versions mixed up, the song in the background of the laserdisc version is nowhere to be found in the playstation version. I will keep looking, but it's rather annoying that you insist on repeating that I won't find it. I'm not "butthurt" . If you would like to contribute to the thread where you see it lacking, feel free to do so. Otherwise, if you dislike my thread and have nothing to add, stop posting in it. You also seem very knowledgeable in ripping music from games, so I'm assuming you could find the material yourself if you really want it in your preferred format. Problem solved.

I love Motoaki Takenouchi's music, so I decided to upload all I have and post it together here, in one place. Some of these are rather difficult to find, so I hope you enjoy them. They are mostly mp3 VBR V0, but a couple are V2.

This is from the first post of the thread. It is unreasonable for you to expect 320 kbps files if you had read this because while I do not provide the bitrate of every single album, I do give enough information for you to deduce that 320 kbps is not the format of the majority of the files.

I was simply requesting information in my previous post. Thank you for the link to the archive of his dead page. I will continue trying to find this, although you seem to think it impossible.

Edit: found a Road Blaster laserdisc rom...I'll let you know if I find anything.

douchebagfag
05-28-2010, 04:23 AM
You don't have to let me know, because you won't find it, ever. Mega LD dumps don't exist because the data on the disc isn't sequenced in tracks, it's just a big analog stream and no one has bothered to write a custom parallel transfer for the Laseractive because no one cares. The only way to acquire that music would be to search around specialty stores in Japan and plunk down the $400 or so to purchase the disc, and another $600 for the console required to play it, like I did.

I'm able to direct download all of this music in lossless format already, and I'm trying to help people out who aren't fortunate enough to be able to get the stuff that I get. Usually I don't say anything about these matters but Takenouchi is pretty much my favorite composer and you're basically shitting all over him as far as I'm concerned. If you followed my advice the quality of your links would go way up. If you're going to just farm stuff from other places then you should at least make it as accessible as possible. A badly encoded rapidshare is not the way to do that. I'm pretty sure you haven't even realized that your Agari Suzuki link is down.

Stop being a retard for a change and listen to someone with way more experience than you.

Honestly, I don't understand why you would call an effort by someone to share music by a composer you enjoy "shitting all over him" nor why you're still here, but I also like Takenouchi quite a bit. I don't think these are poor encodes as I did a good bit of them myself and listen to them frequently. You have a bunch of this stuff in lossless, great. I hope you enjoy listening to it, because you're not "helping people out who aren't fortunate enough to be able to get the stuff that [you] get" unless you share it, so get off your high horse unless you're going to do something other than complain, please. Seriously, we have a common interest and this is a hobby. Is there really a need to be so vicious? All I'm doing is making the music more available to people that might be interested to hear it. If they want lossless quality, they can get what's available to buy on CD, but otherwise there aren't many places on the internet you can find some of these albums. I would be interested to hear what brought you here.

Also, the laser disc image must have been from the laser disc-based arcade game, because the music was the same as the psx version.

ignore the stupid tagging, obviously only Motoaki Takenouchi should appear in the artist field (for any subsequent MP3 releases as well.) some great songs here. i'd heard most of them before in a more-extensive untagged rip that KungFuFurby did. the soundtrack as a whole seems to suffer from the same poor sound implementation that Granhistoria had, but the underlying music is great. Thanks a bunch, Goniochromism! I have converted the files to mp3, removed the extra artist info, and it is now in the first post. This is more of the Takenouchi we love, ladies and gentleman, and while I don't love it as much as say Shining Wisdom, Gungriffon, or Jewel Master, it's pretty good.

The links in the first post have been updated, but here they are as well:

Reupload:

Shining Force Gaiden (http://www.mediafire.com/?mendjwckzumyzqh)

Shining Force Gaiden II: The Sword of Hajya (http://www.mediafire.com/?km5gznzwg2yzmom)

Keep in mind, from the OP about Gaiden 1:

Almost exactly the same music as Sword of Hajya, this includes ONLY the 2 tracks that are not in Shining Force Gaiden II: The Sword of Hajya.

I get what you're referring to, but game gear games are typically .kss . I do have that and can upload it if you want

Hey thanks for replying! I guess there are a few sound formats that are mixing me up... I have other game gear soundtracks that are in .vgm format. I like them because each track is it's own file and I can queue up individual tracks in winamp to make a playlist. Now I see there are also .kss files where all the tracks are bunched together in the one file. It's not ideal, but if you have it, I would still love to get it! I'm curious though do you know if it's possible to easily separate the tracks somehow? Thanks again!

jakob
02-11-2011, 03:26 AM
Okay, Neilman, so I have uploaded the .kss for Sword of Hajya here (http://www.mediafire.com/?gczl2npthyti3zn) (which I only ever found in one place which is now down) after not being able to find the .vgm set. I did, however, find a set of shining force gaiden: final conflict (the sequel to sword of hajya) <A HREF="http://www.smspower.org/Music/ShiningForceGaidenFinalConflict-GG">here</A> if you're interested.

Anyway, if you must have separate files for sword of hajya, you could always get my set of mp3s from the main page that I tagged and converted and from this .kss set.

Neilman
02-11-2011, 04:44 PM
thanks for the upload jakob, it sounds just like I remember it. I didn't know kss files were so hard to come by. I just did some more searching and found a little kss collection that coincidentally even has the sword of hajya in it too. Here it is in case any others are looking to find some more kss files: ftp://modland.com/pub/modules/KSS/-%20unknown/

I don't see any indication that motoaki takenouchi had anything to do with this.

Does anyone have the "Gungriffon: The Eurasian Conflict-Soundtrack Release" arrange soundtrack?

The file has been gone for a while, and I realllllly would like to hear it, given how much I love the arranged Shining Wisdom soundtrack release, and how much I like the original music in the Saturn rip of Gungriffon.

I think most of these links are down actually, but I have been really looking for that one specifically.

(By the way, thanks for this thread, since a while ago when more of these worked, I used this thread to get a lot his stuff that I didn't have. I sometimes consider Motoaki Takenouchi my favorite composer!)

Funny, we were talking about these two soundtracks in this thread a couple years ago (how has it even been that long??) but I completely forgot about them. Here are Cho Aniki Show II (http://www.mediafire.com/?b7od0cfser3b0hu) (takenouchi did track 5) and Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken TV Original Soundtrack (http://www.mediafire.com/?d44kn2kwmjm) (arranged by Matsuo and Takenouchi, taken from the earlier link by Cleri). Note that it's just the music that I've uploaded for Cho Aniki Show II, not the drama tracks.

Also, an upcoming surprise! I found a copy of the Landstalker Soundtrack CD and when it comes in the mail I will upload FLAC to complement the mp3 I already have of it. I've never been able to find lossless for this album, so this should be a nice update for everyone interested!
