Bal-Sagoth, Gorgoroth, Gaahl's former bands, Mayhem but only because Varg's story is intriguing. I love how Bal-Sagoth uses classical-like stuff in their songs, plus the book-long names are cool. that's why they're my fav.

I don't listen to a huge lot of black metal really (probably one of many many genres I should look into more), but I really dig stuff like Enochian Crescent, Darkthrone, ColdWorld, Drudkh, Burzum, Ulver, Akercocke,

but in its own style I do prefer the ambient and black noise. ^^

Yeah great band...

So Black Metal, Don't listen often but..

Emperor - The best of this genre to me

Cradle Of Filth - The first Decade of the band only, Until "Midian"

Dimmu Borgir - From "Entrhone Darkness Triumphant" to "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"

Anorexia Nervosa

There are other few, but I can't remember them now.

not anymore, but their first decade have great things, "forest whispers my name", "funeral in carpathia", "cthulhu Dawn", "cruelty brought thee orchids", "thirteen autumns and a widow"..
then they come up with things like nimphetamine, you say something like "WTF, go an join Korn dude".

Anyway screw the 2000's Cradle of Filth, I'll stick to their old albums and have a good memory.

Borknagar was another good band.

Yeah that's pretty much typical that so many people simply don't like Cradle of Filth anymore as a band but still they did have neat harsh songs like Cthulhu Dawn and all. It's most likely the same with bands like Dimmu Borgir and The Kovenant (although I really don't mind the industrial blend :3).

Blackend Death Metal works. Behemoth is a tight band of musicianship & Dimmu definitley pounds some riffs out. But in general Black Metal i do like early Burzum, Mayhem, but most black metal is sluggish, boring, no real riffs. Black Metal does hone some great drummers though.

I wonder how I only just noticed this thread.

1. Nokturnal Mortum
2. Emperor
3. Carpathian Forest
4. Peste Noire
5. Burzum

Beyond that, I don't know, I'm not in the mood to pick between them all right now. There are so many sub-genres of black metal that it's really hard to rank them. I generally fap to the French, Ukrainian, and Norwegian shit. USBM is ok. The Swedish sound doesn't really do it for me, most of the time, though Marduk kick ass.

Alcest's Le Secret is the greatest black metal album ever recorded. Peste Noire's Ballade cuntre lo Anemi francor might be second.

Post-black is delicious and I need to hear more of it. Agalloch, Krallice, and Klabautamann are not enough.

Opeth were never black metal. Their early material really defies classification, and you should go listen to it. Orchid, Morningrise, and My Arms Your Hearse are all probably top 100 metal albums of all time material.

Ahh, Black Metal… hehe :) Been listening to it for many years now. Back then in the 90s I started with the obvious ones like Enslaved, Emperor, Abigor, Satyricon etc. but rarely listen to them anymore (apart from Satyricon's first two albums and "Anthems.." from Emperor).
Though some of the following bands aren't 100% "kvlt" and "trve" and often cross the borders to Pagan Black or DSBM, these are my fave ones.

Above all: Bal Sagoth (though they aren't really BM but more a genre of their own)
After them in no particular order:

Skyforger (esp. "Latvian Riflemen")
Ulver (both "old" and "new")
Arckanum
Eljudner
Taake
Drapsnatt
Austere
Svarti Loghin
Nokturnal Mortum (esp. "Mirrovozzrenie")
Furia (POL)
Borknagar (only the first album)
Moonsorrow (only the "Veriskeet" album)
Morrigan

I'm also a lot into Viking stuff like Bathory, Crom, Manegarm, Ereb Altor etc. but that's another genre ;)

Honestly... Sorry to barge into this but you people seriously have no idea what black metal even is. I consider the whole thing rather silly and musically dull but even more hilarious I find the kids who while laughing at the bands they deem "kvlt" still listen to the music. That to me is the biggest state of idiocy. Even if you have to use such terms when talking about black metal is fucking dumb in my opinion. Black Metal is not supposed to be listened for fun or enjoyment. It is a vessel of sonic occultism, disgust and hate. Believe me, I think that is just as stupid as any of you but that is what the music is.

I hate revisionism and this to me is just another example of it. Like when doom metal turned from its theological and bluesy roots into this goth garbage it is today or when The Offspring became punk. People who pick Moonsorrow, Alcest or similar shit on their lists of favourite black metal bands should not even talk about the genre. If you think it's funny to laugh at some ridiculous promo pics or something at least don't claim that you are a black metal fan in the same sentence. Even the notion of someone listening to black metal because of "tight drumming" or something like that is utterly stupid.

"Society has no idea of what it is dealing with. By the Church's thousand year anniversary it has not grasped that the demand for logical consquence and rationality also can find a religious variety, which - contrary to the lie of eternal life - worships the ecstatic contemplation of truth, which is death, for nothing is more true. With that within sight, reality will suddenly feel close and near. To make it even more intense, one worships it in all shapes and colors, with text, pictures and music, like any other religion. The truthful as the good, and therefore the beautiful, is a basic Aristotelian principle that has definitely not passed the black-clad by. When this seems to be the reality in the heads of these self-styled fog-bursters, it would be naive to think that they are moved by a weaker force than one that has always made enthusiasts force the truth, contrary to society's beliefs. My conclusion is that this society is facing a movement that it will take a long time to establish a clear view upon, and that any lightly considered action against it may be like putting out a fire with gasoline."

[Morgenbladet, 1995]

HAHAHA wow!!

ANYWAY, enough with the pseudo-intellectual omniscient ego trip...seriously, so sick of people trying tell OTHER people what THEY, THEMSELVES, think "real" black metal is (or "real" anything). And for someone who claims to know it all you apparently don't know or conveniently left out the anti-Christianity/organized religion aspects of black metal. That in itself is not hateful, also quite common are lyrics about nature and folklore (I know that sounds REALLY funny/strange, imagining guys in corpse paint making songs about the trees and the snow and the mountains but it's true). Many bands, especially those out of Norway, promoted a going back to ones roots - paganism (some promoted Satanism and atheism as well).
I, personally, listen to it because I DO enjoy it since uh, I know what black metal IS and not what someone THINKS it is based on a few misconceptions from the media such as ALL black metal being hateful/evil/etc.
Black metal, like all other styles of music, is listened to for various reasons INCLUDING fun & enjoyment. And why is it such a problem for someone to listen to black metal for those specific reasons? Does that somehow fuck up your day?!?

So onward with my fav. black metal bands:
Immortal (love love LOVE them)
Kampfar (Valgalderkvad, to me, is one of their best songs)
Mystic Circle
Behemoth, I know not black now but they were in the early days

P.S. - that pic of Varg is hilarious (he looks like a grandpa in that pic)! Now Nationalist Socialist bm is something I can never, EVER get with or support and it's so sad that a lot of people actually think that black metal equates to that.

I'm like that with all kinds of music. This is why I like melodic death metal a lot. Fuck that douche who talks about the kind of people that SHOULD listen to this kind of shit because the last time I checked, people listen to music for enjoyment. Seriously, who would want to listen to something that will just piss them off even more? Music should either compliment the mood you're in (I listen to Suicide Silence when pissed because it makes me want to find someone I hate and pound their face until it's nothing but mush and blood) or be a stress-reliever and calm your ass down.
