I downloaded a DVDA simply entitled Brazilian Jazz from a torrent. It has a number of selections from Bossa All Stars, Ricardo Leo, Armandinho, Claudio Guimares, Mrio Sve, Aquilo Del Nisso, Nilvaldo Ornelas, Aquarela Carioca, Torcuato Mariano, Marinho Boffa, Rui Motta, Vidor Santiago, and Antero Vilhena. So, I am looking into these artists' albums and what not.

I'm loving jazz now, especially these brazilian groups, so recommend me other people/groups. I don't remember listening to anything quite like these guys or else I would have gotten into this genre much earlier. =]

Jazz is my favorite kind of music, and I am particularly fond of the great Jazz ladies. If you are interested, I could put together a little something.

This collection features a legendary singer called Della Reese. All tracks were recorded between 1959 and 1964, and "Don't You Know" was a #1 hit back in '59, and "Not One Minute More" was also million-seller in 1960, and peaked at number #12.

Just unzip, and enjoy! Let me know what you think once you've had a listen:

Considering the artists and similar styles that Argus Zephyrus on the original post said is looking, i presume one of them would be Bossa Nova. A mix of Jazz along with Brazilian rhythms.
I'm not a connoisseur to exactly tell what artists or bands do you need to listen under this genre, but i can suggest you to listen the album 'Wave' by Tom Jobim: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:0ifpxqlgldfe

If you like Samba and Bossa Nova, you might like Luciana Souza (Brazilian vocalist, one of her tracks comes with Vista Media Center ("Muita Bobiera"). She has two albums of Duos with a guitar player, and they are very entertaining) Also, try:

Chick Corea (piano, latin rhythms, very original style with awesome solos)
Marc Anthony (he has some sappy stuff, but his peppy salsa stuff is great, and the bands that play with him are usually outstanding. Try the track "celos" or "barco a la deriva")
Antonio Carlos Jobim (Brazilian Guitar)
Astrud Gilberto (great female vocalist in the samba/bossa style. You might find some of her stuff corny, but you might love it. I do :) )
Cannonball Adderly (sax giant. Has a bossa album called "Cannonball's Bossa Nova" that is GREAT!!)

I would try some of that. Chick Corea has a lot of different stuff, some totally electric, some totally acoustic, with different instrumentation, but all with latin style. If you want electric-ish, check out the albums "The Leprechan", "Alice in Wonderland", "Light as a Feather". If you want acoustic, try one of his duet albums with Gary burton, which are very fun to listen to. They are called Native Sense and Crystal Silence.

Hopefully that gives you something, if not a couple things, to listen to that you will like.

A couple recommendations of non-latin-sounding groups or artists:

It depends on what you're into..

Piano:

Oscar Peterson (he has a lot of great stuff)
Ahmad Jamal
Horace Silver (actually a little latin-sounding sometimes)
Thelonious Monk (a little "out there" but great)
Duke Ellington (his band is a bit bigger, i would definitely recommend the 70th birthday concert)

Smaller Bands:

Lee Morgan (Trumpet player, awesome! Listen to the album "the sidewinder")
Art Blakey (Drummer, also awesome)
The Brecker Brothers (Michael Brecker, sax. Randy Brecker, Trumpet. more modern-sounding)
Cannonball Adderly groups (quintets, etc. Cannonball rocks)

Big Bands:

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band (loud. Great soloists, great compositions)
Maynard Ferguson (High, loud trumpet player. I like his version of "spinning wheel". Listen to the older stuff from the 60's or so.)

These are just some I like...

So it's called Bossa Nova? I see. Thanks y'all!
I've gots searchings to do.

Zulu, thank you, the album is quite nice.

Edit: Say, if any of you are interested in this DVDA I got, I can post the Torrent file or maybe upload my downmixed version and post links in the Download Links section.

The downmixed version is stereo, 96kHz/24-bit flac (whereas the original is 5.1 surround 96kHz/24-bit) - I used foobar2k and a downmixing plugin to convert (wav to wav), but ripped it with a program called DVD Audio Explorer. I use Foobar2000 with WASAPI output plugin to an external "soundcard" that only takes stereo pcm, no DD or DTS, that's why - it's like a binaural recording now. =]

You should check out Buena Vista Social Club (Self titled album) It takes all the Cuban Jazz Stars and puts them on this legendary album. Also you should check out Papa Gato by Poncho Sanchez. As far as regular Jazz goes, you can't go wrong with Coltrane, give his album Blue Train a try. Also Miles Davis is one of the best, Live-Evil is a great album, it's "jazz fusion" if you are into that kind of thing, it's funky. I also second Thelonius Monk, you need to pick up the album Straight, No Chaser. I have other things I'll come by and recommend from all walks of jazz, including more Latin. I'll also drop you some links for you to sample things.

I can't believe I didn't mention coltrane OR miles. I love John Coltrane.

A couple of names not mentioned yet: Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock. Along with Horace Silver they're probably my 3 all-time favorite jazz artists. :)

And also Oliver Nelson, Art Tatum, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker,

Django Reinhardt for the lovely gypsy jazz,

Nat King Cole's early work (The Nat King Cole Trio albums),

and anything John Zorn touched. :p Stuff like Naked City is quite harsh, though.

Pat Metheny Group - a brillliant world jazz fusion band. Been going for agessss. I'd definitely try them out -- "Imaginary Day", perhaps "Letter from Home" and "The Way Up" [which is more guitar-centric than the others].

I don't listen to much Jazz so much as I listen to Fusion Jazz.

I recommend Weather Report, Aghora, Cynic, Gordian Knot, Sean Malone, Return to Forever and THE LEGENDARY Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I LOVE return to forever (chick corea + friends...). My dad always used to listen to weather report, also, so I like them too. Mahavishnu is fun sometimes, but i've never heard of those others.

Though, I must say I was disappointed to find that you weren't looking for jazz, Bossa Nova is also great.

There are many great artists including...
• Antonio Carlos Job
• Elis Regina
• Carlos Lyra
• Joao Donato
• Os Gatos
• Tamba Trio
• Dick Farney

The list goes on and on, but this is a good list.

Speaking of Brazilian music, if you also like samba you should look into Beth Carvalho.

And just because I want to, here is a list of some great Traditional Jazz and swing artists...
• Louis Armstrong
• Cab Calloway
• Turk Murphy
• Spike Jones
• Woody Herman
• Lu Watters
• Nat King Cole
• Billie Holiday

After watching The 1st Ladies Detective Agency I've re-discovered Jill Scott who's jazz and R&B. Even if it's not quite what you're looking for she's still a good listen.

You'll probably like Jazz-fusion too; it's more rock driven than your typical "bebop" or "smooth jazz" but keeps its characteristic "cool" rhythms. Here are some bands if you are interested: Casiopea; T-square; Dimension; Trix; Chick Corea Elektric Band; Weather Report, etc...

Midnight Rendezvous of Casiopea:

And if you are into Nu-jazz or acid jazz you should hear The Cinematic Orchestra:

You could also dig upon the classics; Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus; Dizzy Gillespie; Miles Davis; John Coltrane; Billy Evans; Louis Armstrong, etc...
