Im thinking of getting my little brother the "No Need For Tenchi!" mangas http://www.viz.com/products/products.php?&series_id=123&section=profiles
He already read the first two volumes and he watched the first 4 episodes of the first series and seems to really like it. So, has anyone here read the manga and liked it/hated it?

I would consider buying him the DVDs but they are very pricy, kinda looks like there out of print or something and I dont think there is any 1 definitive box set with all 20 episodes in it.

I dug the manga, but the English dub is pretty good so I'd rather watch the series.

The timeline for the series as a whole is kind of weird.

And, yes, the DVDs are pretty nuts in the price.
I think I've seen the 'last' ova (7 eps) for like 30.

There's a lot more stuff:

The main reason I want to get him the manga is becosule lately he's lost interest in reading. He was going through sister's old Harry Potter's but lost intrest half way in and has no real favorite topic right now.

Before I re-watched it (The Ryo-Oki! 20 ep. OVA) I did quite a bit of research to make sure I was watching the right continuity and ya, it is very mixed up.

Well depending on his age I'd suggest 'Berserk' for a read.
But that's really into the 18 or so crowd.

Course, I started reading it when I was like 15, but, still...this is your bro.

What's your brother into, when it comes to anime/manga?

Hes 14 and has watched Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, a handful of Myazaki movies, Gotham Knight, FLCL, and has seen some Magical Shopping Arcade Abinobashi as well as kinda remembering Cardcaptors.
And like I said he really liked the few episodes of Tenchi we watched together.

Ouch, yeah. No Berserk for him...I don't want a nasty PM from you later.

I'll try and come up with a list.

I enjoyed the OVA very much, and it was the what introduced me to Tenchi Muyo!. I forgot where I watched it - Adult Swim if I'm not mistaken.

I watched the complete TV series late last year on animefuel - it was okay.

I wish the OVA had continued.

At least the Hellsing OVA is still ongoing >)

It did continue, they made about 6 more episodes to round the series off at 20 episodes. All in all they are pretty good but aside from a few revelations most of the original cast don't get much to do and there's quite a few new characters thrown in as well.

I just wish there was a thread here with every track in the series.

There's bits and pieces of it, but that's all.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (天地無用! 魎皇鬼, Tenchi Muyō! Ryōōki?) is a twenty episode collection of OVAs produced by AIC, initially released in Japan in 1992. The first two OVA series were later licensed and distributed in North America by Pioneer LDC, with FUNimation Entertainment taking over the rights for the third (and latest) series.

The distribution of the first OVA series was originally started in September 1992 and released six episodes that lasted until 1993. The first series was so successful that a seventh special episode was released in January 1994, followed by a Second OVA series with six additional episodes that begun distribution in September 1994 and lasted for one year until September 1995. However the Second OVA series ended on a cliffhanger and it wasn't until nearly eight years later in 2003 that a third OVA series was distributed in Japan. The third OVA series ended the Tenchi Muyo OVA storyline with six episodes, followed by a special episode released in September 2005 that concluded the storyline.

Tenchi muyo is one of my all time faves. I have the complete set. So I figured I would give you all I know about the series. Some you might already know but I hope I can fill in any blanks.

It starts with tenchi muyo the origanal series. Note that unlike most other anime wich are based on manga it was instead a light noval. This gave creators Masaki Kajishima and Hiroki Hayashi more freedom to create there work but less money to back it up. So as we know the original series was cut short.

A couple years pass and Tenchi became pretty famous in Japan. Due to this they decided to add to the series creating Tenchi universe and then the comedy Tenchi in tokyo. During this time four Tenchi movies were spawned:

Tenchi in love
Tenchi for ever
Tenchi Muyo: Daughter of darkness
Tenchi Muyo in love 2 eternal memory
(Note eternal memory is extremly rare and mostly unkown
outside of Japan)

There were then several fan mini spin offs made, Pretty sammy, mihoshi's story and carnival day. (Note: Carnival day is actualy an extra piece to the origanal Tenchi Muyo series.)

Of course this was not enough. Finely they created The no need for Tenchi manga. As you stated earlier there was some things that seem a little light. Lets say this, if you get the manga No need for Tenchi read it. It is actually the filler and connection between Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Muyo Ryo Oki.

Of course after that Tenchi Muyo Ryo Oki was made to finish off the Origanal Tenchi Muyo series. After which they followed that by GXP wich happens to take place in the same continuity as the origanal Tenchi muyo about five years after Tenchi Muyo Ryo Oki.

Also some ware in the middle of all this mess. Was Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure. Even though the story line is diffrent, it was a project ment to connect to the origanal Tenchi Muyo story line but due to money the project was cut and then they ended the series early. Easter egg, goodness, Shinbu from dual is actualy the unit Kasuki ends up finding at the end of GXP. There was suppose to be more of a connection but that all they could get.

And finaly the last series up to date of the series is another pretty sami spin off called Sasami pretty girls club. I can imagine you don't want that one, I didn't either.

Also note the series Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, Hasegawa canon created by Hiroshi Negishi. Despite this and even though it used a few of the same characters such as Kiyone. It wasn't counted as apart of any tenchi continuity by Masaki Kajishima. Masaki evidently won. Aint directorial rivalries fun.

So here it is. As far as I know it, the whole thing. This info I got from a combo of what I new filled with what I found on wiki.

As for Tenchi the series earns my official seal of Badassitude.

As for your Bro I suggest Dual! El Hazard, Gurran Laggan, R.O.D., Arouni Kenshin, and full metel panic. Each one of these comes with an excellent manga that I think fits what you discribed. Enjoy.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure, You mean that Eva-parody one that was on Tech TV? If I'd known that is was a Tenchi spin off I would have payed more attention in watching it.

It was meant to be an add on to the Tenchi Muyo story yet like I said they had to cut the series short and it pretty much lost its connection. A deceant enough anime but don't worry about it. If any thing else just check it out on youtube.
