For a game of this size and scale that is reported to take "at least" 60 hours rushing through the story and about 120 hours to complete all sidequests, the tracklist seems rather short in total length.

This is only supposed to be a selection of the soundtrack. A longer soundtrack will eventually be released according to Music 4 Games: (http://www.music4games.net/News_Display.aspx?id=1271)

The official soundtrack for Dragon Age: Origins will be available to purchase and download online from popular music sites when the game ships on November 3, 2009, while selected tracks from the soundtrack will be included in the Dragon Age: Origins Collector’s Edition.

Does the soundtrack get it's own CD ? Or it is a DVD with other contents in it?
Is the soundtrack directly on mp3 format at 256cbr ? (or it was just encoded like this..)

I won't say too much about this since I may have to review it for Tracksounds anyway, but as a general impression I was underwhelmed by this score. The music is serviceable and Zur has managed to transcend the sea of mediocrity that I find he usually swims in (with some notable exceptions, including Syberia II), but I refuse to accept "serviceable" for a game that's meant to be a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. First of all, where Baldur's Gate had a sizeable live ensemble, the one used in this score sounds positively tiny — the string section in particular sounds puny, something that could easily have been fixed with some layering of virtual instruments. It's not like Zur is experiencing a shortage of budget or anything. Furthermore, I took issue with the fact that many of the main horn lines sounded so ridiculously nasal that they totally removed any sense of nobility in the writing itself.

Anyway, suffice it to say that I was expecting much greater things from this score. This should have been a Lair-scale effort; it wasn't, and I fail to understand why. I don't like to be negative about composers because I know firsthand how hard and convoluted the work is, but I will humbly submit that I think they could have hired someone much more qualified to provide the level of musical prowess this title begs for than Inon Zur.

That being said, the score is still a cut above some other scores in the genre, and I can't say I didn't enjoy listening to it — though it failed to keep my attention as well as I'd hoped — but I guess I should count my blessings. Anyway, just wanted to drop in my two cents. :)

Well I haven't played or listened to the soundtracks of the Baldur's Gate series so I have no expectation there. I enjoy the soundtrack a lot more than the usual recent western RPG soundtracks so in that sense it was a great job. Of course it is no where near the quality I have from some of my favorite scores but I try to not compare something I enjoy with something I may enjoy more because that just makes me more critical of them.

It's a decent track; I expected more, to be honest, as Dragon Age is a game of truly epic proportion. I won't go in-depth as I don't think my English is good enough, but it fits in the game nicely and does its job of "reinforcing" the gameplay and cutscenes.

Most themes are forgettable, even if decent, especially the the combat pieces. They're just long sections of bass and thumping sounds (plus the occassional heroic horn), plus a chorus. I greatly enjoy the calmer and somewhat sober themes, especially the ending piece "I am the One". It's a great vocal performance with a nice, "weaving" melody to it that's really both sad and majectic and serves as an amazing ending.

I advise you to try the soundtrack, it's definately worth at least a single hearing. For the last theme, at the least. :)

Are there more tracks ingame (which I suppose) like on the score? Sadly if not. Otherwise, for an RPG with that playtime, I'd expect something more decent in selection and variety.
Like Oblivion with its truly nice 2-3 ambient themes gots sometimes annoying after ~40 hours of play.

to extract .fsb files I use a program called "ToWav"

http://rapidshare.com/files/307699932/ToWav.7z

just extract, then copy the files you want to extract to the "ToWav" folder

then run "ConvAll" and extraction should start

I'm gonna go a step further - and say that Zur did a poor job on this score just the same way the Crysis score was poorly done. It's fortunate that the games he scores to are good enough that the gameplay and story take enough of the gamer's attention away from the music to cover it up.

I've heard better work from OCremix users composing music in their dorm rooms. Zur has no excuses.

They were both serviceable scores, as I said, but they should have been so much more. Especially this one. I continue to be disappointed with this score.

Someone please explain to me why Zur is so popular these days? He doesn't even make particularly good mock-ups...

I thought Fallout 3's ambient exploration music was VERY atmospheric and fit the game perfectly. Also by Inon Zur. Is it something to listen to outside the game? Maybe not, but that doesn't make the music automatically bad.

I agree the music fit fallout 3 very well. However, on these forums often times the criticisms to a soundtrack come from people who only listened to the soundtrack separate from the game.

JohnGalt
11-20-2009, 11:16 PM
Since I've played both Fallout 3 and Dragon Age now quite extensively, I should mention that my critiques are *not* coming from a purely musical standpoint. There's little doubt that Zur's scores for both these titles work in game and provide the appropriate atmosphere, but there's more to it than just having a workable score.

My criticism was a personal one, and it boils down to the fact that I have yet to listen to an Inon Zur score — in game or out of it — that actually moves me, compels me in some way, or transcends its medium to leave a lasting impression. Syberia II was melodic and beautiful and it was about as close as he's come thus far in my experience with his music.

Banzai!
11-20-2009, 11:35 PM
I think Inon Zur is getting worse over time. I liked the Crysis soundtrack but the only good part of the Fallout 3 music was the main theme. IMO this is possibly the worst music made for a Bioware game.

Hi, everyone, first time posting since I joined.
First of all, thanks a lot for this soundtrack, I barely found it :D

I personally am a sucker for video game soundtracks, even though I haven't been playing too many games in my time. I remember the first soundtrack I ever heard was from Elder Scrolls III: Morowind and it's that score that got me into the genre (aside the fact that many genres of metal contain this kind of music more or less). Some my favourite soundtracks are Shadow of the Colossus, the complete Medal of Honor franchise, the horrific "Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth" music... and now this one.
