I don't mind turn based games some of my favorite are, but I definately don't mind action oriented RPG's either. In fact I think that now a days all epic ass RPG's should have an epic epic fight system like Dissidia :D Imagine running through the awesome world of your fav RPG busting out moves like that !

Yes, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Only played like 5 minutes of chrono trigger and I didnt really understand the battle system :D But everyone says its a good game so I need to give them both a go. Do I need to play trigger first to understand the story of cross?

Lunar: Another game I hear is great, havent played any of them though. Need to look into this :D The Silver Story Complete is a good version to have?

And yes, Suikoden, I was considering suikoden II for my next game as I have nevered played one of those either. I like games with great bad guy characters and I hear the villain from 2 is a good one :D

What Wild Arms would you guys suggest? Graphics aren't totally necessary in a game, but if I am going to play a retro game I still like at least the 2d artwork to have aged well. Suikoden II is an example I think looks this way, Final Fantasy VI as well. That's why I am iffy to start Wild Arms, and was considering starting at Wild Arms 2 or 3. What do you guys think?

Grandia II is another option I hear is really good. and Dr. Faustus yes I have every single Star Ocean already, but have only played first and second departure which I thought were pretty good RPG's. I will probably start on til the end of time right after I finish Tales of the Abyss! :D

You don't really need to, but CT is a good game regardless.

For action-RPGs I'd always suggest 'Okami' and if your PSP is hacked 'Macross: Frontier'

Star Ocean : Till the End of Time is pretty epicI concur~. The voice acting gets griped with, but the gameplay, story and item creation more than make up for the sub par acting.

It's the only version I've played start to finish. I tried the gba version and it seemed like stuff was cut, I didn't care for it.

Next year they're coming out with a redone version for the PSP that'll have better graphics and more story if you'd want to hold out for that.

also, if you're good with strategy RPGs Disgaea is one of the best games ever.

hmm I dunno Im not usually a completionist :D The most important aspect of a game to me is if the setting/story intrigues me. I always like going for getting the best weapons and stuff like that but when it comes to Cooking or something Im not really interested in completing it 100% :D

Give me the ultimate weapon to beat your nemesis with and Im good to go ;)

Ive wanted to get the SMT series a go for a while too but I been trying to decide which one looks the most evil because I wanna get that one :) definately been looking at Persona 4

I suggest these ones.

FF Tactics: There are plenty of good Tactical RPG out there, but this one has the particularity of an outstanding storyline. It's for the PSX and the PSP, I didn't played the PSP version yet.

Vagrant Story: Also for the PSX. It's a kind of a solo dungeon-crawl with an outstanding storyline. It has a battle system based more on developing your equipment rather than your character, it's a love or hate game for many people, so be careful.

Parasite Eve: What can I say the PSX has the best RPG's out there matching my tastes. This one was an intent to combine survival horror with RPG. The survival horror factor is kind of non existent, but the storyline is great and the battle system is really fun. The sequel kinda blow the storyline.

A note about Chrono Games: If you want to get deep into the storyline play Trigger first, if not, go with Cross and considering that you like Xenogears, you will have more fun with Cross.

I guess maybe this is just a generational thing. I can't possibly imagine liking Cross more than Trigger. It completely blows my mind when people don't think CT is one of the all time greatest games ever of all eternity amen. Like, untouchably good.

Not really, it's matter of tastes rather than generational. The storylines from these two games have a different style and the gameplay as well. In CC you deal with dimensions and in CT you deal with time traveling. It depends on which you feel more confortable. I personally enjoy both the same way, because I tend to see things as a whole. But the gameplay of CT has more replay value to me. Neither are better than the other, both are equally great to me.

I actually started with FFI as my first RPG, so it's not that.

I played CT long before CC, it's just I enjoyed the battles/music more.

CT is a classic, like 'A Midsummer's Night Dream', and I think it will always be that way.

However, for me, CC is like a more relaxed and enjoyable inspiration version of it, say like, "The Vision of Escaflowne".

While I can appreciate Chrono Trigger as a classic, for me it's one of those games you play through and put down.
It's good for what it is.

Chrono Cross on the other hand is weaker in a lot of aspects to CT (characters, story, and lack of diverse locations for example) but for me it still manages to be a game I want to play over and over again.

There's something about it that brings me back over and over again.

It was the first game I ever bought on impulse (I saw opening movie in a demo disk) and I've yet to regret it.

Anyways, TL/DR?
My paragraph for the day.

do you like turn-based strategy games? i can think of a series that i really like its called fire emblem, its battle style is kinda similar to Final Fantasy Tactics

Sackboy

ActRaiser - I really wouldn't call it an RPG, but it does hold some elements of one. This is a classic SNES title that's both side scroll platform and midevil style sim city where you are god.

Secret of Mana is very high on my list. An action RPG with a beautiful story, graphics and music.

Final Fantasy Tactics is also recommended. One of my most favorite FF games of all time next to...

Final Fantasy VI. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

probably before the psx was even thought of.
and yet, while i enjoy CT like a madman, CC has something so special, so magical, that everytime i achieve a 100% on it, i delete the save and start over.
no other game has made me done that voluntarily.

Actually Super Mario RPG was my first RPG ever. And I got into it for a while before I played other RPGs. I was so young playing this game I probably didn't even know what an RPG was, which is why I didn't get into other RPG's for years to come...

But man did Super Mario RPG take up some of my early childhood lol. I had this friend named Kuni who was an exchange student from Japan, and he showed Super Mario RPG to me, and it blew my little 8 or whatever year old mind. Bowser joinin you, the sword bad guy, aaah those were the days ;)

I had to get that game the moment I played it at his house ;)

Secret of Mana I need to play for sho I have it and played a bit of it but havent got more than like 30 minutes into the game.

Another good series that a lot of people outside of Japan don't know about is the Ys series of games made by Falcom. Ys book 1 and 2 can be found on the turbografx CD or on Wii virtual console. they are up to Ys 7 I believe plus a few non numbered games mixed in on various systems and the PC.

Knights of the Old Republic

It's combat is real time turn based.

Be good or evil.

3 different starting classes.

3 different Jedi classes.

And unlike nearly every other RPG EVERY person from main charactors to the "I AM ERROR" space fillers have voice overs, which for the most part is top tier i.e. Bastila Shan is voiced by Jenifer Hale and Jolee Bindo is voiced by Keven Michael Richardson.
