Before anyone asks: This is music from the first season/series not the second one. I've only uploaded the 14 new and previously unreleased tracks in the links below and there is no cover art. As is normal with Yoko Kanno releases, not all of the tracks used in the series appear on this soundtrack. There's still a few pieces unreleased but this is a majority of the ones most people wanted on the first soundtrack.

The torrent link above has all of the tracks listed below in 5.1 surround sound flac. The mp3 versions below were encoded by me. If you find something wrong with either one of them let me know.

This is a great upload and a big tip of the hat for finding it. This contains all of the essential missing tracks from Darker Than Black, which is really nice. There was so much missing from the 1st OST . . . while there's still a couple of missing pieces you know what? This contains virtually everything important that was absent from that OST but also provides some impressive pieces that, if included on the 1st OST, would have made it better. Tracks like "Total Eclipse" gives a nice hard rock flavor that differs from the jazz-dominated OST while some of Kanno's trademark emotional flair is heard in "Hoshimi-sama" and "Sekibetsu". In a way, the emotions of anger, sadness, and hope, mostly missing from the released OST, finally have an outlet here, giving a more or less complete emotional mood for this great series.

This gives me an evil idea . . .

Meh, what a ripoff. All that "unreleased music" talk and they leave out virtually everything of actual worth, again. That touching piano piece from Huang and Shioko's arc, nor the violin one from the start of Yin's for that matter; the jazz piece from episode 5; the orchestral piece from the end of episode 4 and quite a few pieces from the latter half of the series were all shafted again just for some lame rock tunes and some piddly atmospheric shit nobody cared about.

Worst part is, if they didn't inexplicably waste disc space with tracks from the first OST, there would have been room for all of it. I haven't felt this jilted by a soundtrack since Soul Eater OST 2. God, that was pathetic. *rolls eyes* I can't help but pity the poor bastard who wound up paying $300 dollars for such a worthless package. Man, fuck Aniplex. :/

I will agree that the disc space was wasted with all of the old tracks.

Now, on the other hand, be glad we got anything new at all. Darker Than Black's music has generally been screwed over and it's nice that we got as many new tracks as we did. I don't know why they're not releasing the rest, perhaps they're saving them for something else way down the line, but I think that the new tracks, combined with the old OSTs, is good enough. Maybe when the second season's OST comes out we'll get what remains of Kanno's score along with the new guy's tracks.

Soul Eater OST 2 got screwed over because they needed 3 or 4 OSTs to cover all of the music and they tried to cram it all in just 2. DTB's situation is pretty much the same.

I've no idea what Bones has against Kanno's music for this series, but I really wish they'd get over it. As for them releasing more stuff when Meteor of Gemini's OST's come out, I'm not holding my breath. I see a greater chance of Nipponsei doing a straight audio rip like GITS, Wolf's Rain and Genesis of Aquarion before that happens, and that's already grasping at straws, but eh.

I almost wish they wouldn't have bothered at all rather than wasting people's time and money like this. This was bundled with a $300 boxset. It's a pretty shit deal for the price they're asking, considering I've bought much more complete deals for much, much less in the past. And I guess I just feel personally burned that nothing, nothing I was looking forward to is here. It's amazingly dissapointing, especially since they could have put them here but they just didn't want to, copped out and threw in some shit buyers already payed for years ago. That just screams a certain disrespect, for both the music and the consumer.

As for Soul Eater, I get the feeling they could easily wrap it up with just one more OST, but I know that's probably not gonna happen, and the choices in OST2 really pissed me off. They were just weird; why waste space with shitty "characters goofing off" tracks like Woppai and 421000 when they could have put in some of Medusa's and Asura's awesome themes(I especially missed that chanting piece when Asura and Shinigami do battle, and the horror movie-esque violin song when Maka and Chrona first fight.) They even shafted Soul's piano number and that was a fucking plot point. I'll never understand it.

Yes, I'm a nerd. :p

From the rumors I've read Kanno and the director couldn't agree on a set theme for the music other than it should be "detective-esque". But Kanno wasn't given the musicians or budget she wanted and the director kept changing his instructions. The result was music that neither one of them were happy with and coupled with the OST's disappointing sales that pretty much screwed over DTB's music.

Now, I actually got most of the tunes I wanted. There's only two pieces I'm really missing was the piano tune you already mentioned plus the snare drum-driven piece from when Hei attacked Haung. Everything else I wanted wound up in here (particularly "Total Eclipse", "Super Kuro", and "Sekibetsu") so I'm walking out of this happy, especially as I'm getting the tracks for free.

All right, not to steal kyosei's thunder, but I decided to go out on a limb and arrange all of DTB's released music together into two "discs" for the convenience of everyone. I tested out both "CDs" and made sure they would fit onto blank CDs, and they do, plus they also go in order on iTunes and Windows Media Player. There's eighteen tracks on both "discs". James Wendt's songs on are Disc 2, Mai Yamane's tracks are on Disc 1. I tried to follow both the OST and Blu-Ray tracklisting somewhat closely but I did deviate in several areas for the interest of providing better flow. And, just for kicks, I also threw in the full versions of the OP and ED themes.

This is in compliment to kyosei's post for those who would prefer getting a comprehensive DTB experience pre-mixed and ready to go on CD or iTunes playlists or what have you.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for the upload. I've been looking for the unreleased tracks for a heck of a long time now. I'm really sad they didn't put everything out in the boxset. For 300$, it truly seems like a rip off. I'm glad we got more than we originally did. We can always hope that BONES and Yoko Kanno would come to some sort of agreement and have all the OSTs out =(!

Thank you so much for the upload again, I really appreciate it! ^__^

02. Hoshimi-sama = Lady Stargazer
10. Keiyakusha = Contractor
11. Kuro = Black
13. Tentai Kansoku = Astronomical Observation or just Stargazing ;p
17. Kuroneko no Hikkoshi = Black Cat's Den
18. Shizuku = A Drop of Water
20. Mizu to Densen = Water and Electrical Wire
23. Super Kuro = Super Black
24. Sesshoku = Contact

Please read the disclaimer I left at the top of the post... If you had bothered to read my little note you would know I only uploaded the tracks that were exclusive and previously unreleased. My upload speeds (~30kps) are abysmal so that was all I had the patience for. However if you still wanted the full soundtrack in FLAC, Px has already uploaded the whole album here:

The song is played at the beginning of episode 8 with the body switching contractor, the opening scene where its raining and the body-switching contractor makes the other guy lose balance and fall off the building with the body control powers. I love that song!

i totally agree with you.. i hate when they dont release complete soundtracks.. especially when they leave out exceptional songs..

but the song playing in samurai champloo during jin's rescuing of the prostitute is called "Counting Stars" by Nujabes (RIP) on his "Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection" album.. it came out during autumn of '07.. yeah i guess he wanted to end our suffering somewhat..LOL

It's bad that I've been lurking here for as long as I have and my first post here is going to be a complaint, but I need to vent. I've been searching from the track from episode five for nearly four years back when this anime first came out. This track is the only reason I watched that show, waiting episode after episode to see if it would get another cue in one of the episodes. I was devastated to pick up the soundtracks and see that it hasn't made it on to any of the released cds. I've tried editing out all the noise and stuff from the track and just living with what's left, but I seriously fail at that kind of tech stuff and what's left when I'm done with it sounds awful. I wish there was a way to contact Kanno herself, but the more i think about it the more I realize the track is probably owned by anime producers themselves and will be theirs to do with as they please for the next thirty years until a copyright somewhere expires.

This is infuriating (especially after hearing the mounds of unreleased music Kanno did for GiTS:SAC 1&2, though those were eventually ripped). Why in four or five different soundtrack releases would you choose to duplicate songs across a couple CDs instead of include unreleased tracks. It's not like they don't know there's a market for this otherwise why would you release it at all? I'm going to try and give this another shot at editing and see if what I end up with this time is listenable, but I'm seriously skeptical, and don't value this anime enough on the merits of its storytelling animation to make rewatching and ripping of the isolated sound clips less than a complete chore. /complaint

Dude I feel your pain. I would pay so much money for the music from episode 5. Like you I initially watched the series because of the music. I'd seen one of Funimation's trailers. It had the song "highheel runaway" from the soundtrack playing over the trailer and I'm like "Whoa what is this all of a sudden". Then I watched the whole show and it was horrible....

Anyway, hope your editing turns out well.

What's different about this soundtrack as compared to the original OST? (original OST, hurr hurr)
- 6 tracks more than the previous
- 24-bit 48kHz 6ch lossless

Why no stereo MP3 version?
You'll have to ask the producers

I'm no sound producer and I don't trust my ability to downmix this to stereo properly without losing the intended channel balance. You're welcome to try; other people on the Internet have attempted to do so and you can google for their versions if you wish.

Is this really from a proper studio master, or upsampled from the original soundtrack?
I have no idea; you'll have to ask the studio. My audio hardware isn't awesome enough that I can pick out little artifacts that would betray "authenticity".

With that out of the way, this OST from the 1st season is offered, (lovingly?) ripped by Coalgirls from the Bluray boxset. It still does not contain all the music pieces from the original series (send your complaints to Aniplex!), but should be a worthy addition to any audiophile's collection.

It's absolutely not an upsample - it's a fresh master. It has frequency content all the way up to 24,000hz suggesting a master recording made at 48000hz or higher, although they could've "invented" those frequencies with an exciter. Not that it matters because it's all outside of human hearing range anyway.

More relevant, it has significantly more dynamic range than the released soundtrack CD. For that reason alone, it's absolutely worth having if you're a fan of this score.

Muchos gracias Herr Salat... did you really download a 22gb torrent just to extract and reupload the score? :D

No, fortunately, it was in a seperate folder. I think the Coalgirls rip from 2009 is just as good as this one. This is not for me anyway, since I don't have a surround system.

I really like this score. Too bad there are many missing cues! Tango, is it too hard for you to attempt a proper stereo downmix on this? You know... if you have time that is... :D

I'd be happy to, although it would be somewhat redundant effort... Playing back these files on stereo hardware will result in a sensible and fully automated stereo downmix. The channel distribution is obvious; front and back left to the left channel, front and back right to the right channel, and centre channel mixed equally between the two. Please note that the "sixth" channel in this score is 100% digital silence so there is no need to worry about where to put the .1 track - it doesn't exist.

Maintaining the pointless sample rate and the pointless bit depth in the stereo mixdown still pushes 1gb. It just ain't worth it.

If I downsampled to 44100hz 16-bit the size would go down to about 300mb and then it starts to be worthwhile - a CD-quality soundtrack with better dynamics and more music... but then people will moan about the downsampling and I will get angry with them and we'll all end up miserable...

Somebody, convince me this is worth doing...

*convinces tangotreats that it's worth doing it*

EDIT: Seems like I am less convincing than I had thought. :(
