Not bad quality to be honest. Bit to quiet but overall ok. Arranges are nice (especially mana and kh). I like big suites so construction of the concert is great for me. But sometimes music is too... shy? Action parts are just not powerfull enough (clash on a big bridge for example). At least it's my opinion. After one listen. And that darbouka (or whatever it's called). It was nice years ago, but puting it, just to put it, doesn't make sense. It gives nothing to arranges, dosn't make music richer, just annoys. But overall quite good concert. And at last FF sounds a bit different, choir gave it new freshness;). Thanks:).

Hi folks,

The Youtube rip is incredibly good, but it's suffering generational loss. Transmission -> Recording -> Transcoding -> Upload to Youtube -> Transcoded again -> Downloaded from Youtube -> Transcoded to final MP3.

I have digitally extracted the audio from the torrent of the video, normalised, split into tracks, and exported as LAME 3.98.2 -V0. I've also filtered out some noise in the upper frequency range. There was no audio above 15.5khz so I lowpassed it during encoding - this enables LAME to devote 100% of the bitrate to the audible sprectrum instead of wasting it on encoding silence.

Also, the previous version was at 48khz - since there is no audio above 15.5khz, this is pointless; once again LAME is wasting bitrate encoding frequencies which just aren't there - and it's a bugger to burn to CD if you wish.

There is still generational loss, but this audio has been through considerably fewer re-encodes than the Youtube rip - these tracks are sounding quite a bit better. Also, there is the concert performance of the Fanfare here, and not the earlier studio recording as was included (and in poor quality) with the previous MP3 upload.

Finally, as Youtube's limit is 10 minutes, the Youtube rip suffers from gaps and repeated sections where two sections have been spliced together. This edition has every piece of music in full, uninterrupted.

Original poster - feel free to do whatever you like with this rip. If you like it, you could add it to the first post... Or even just keep the link as a mirror if you wish.

:)

Thanks Danny for mostly better rip (it has much better volume). Mostly 'cause CT/CC suite is slightly corrupted near the end (last minute). Or is it just me? So if U could check this, I would appreciate:).

I totally agree...the solo part at the end (encore: OWA) was incredible, but i rather heard OWA on its own.

Actually solo is the most annoying part for me (and I'm glad that on Symphonic Shades solo was separate track, so I just can skip it there;)). But indeed, only CT/CC should have darbouka. It just fits there. And I also discovered that I never liked those solos, nor in Battlefield from Play!, nor on Symphonic Shades etc. But I admit I was quite impressed by skills of the player. But not instrument itself.

You're completely right. The torrent of the video is knackered there. What a pain in the arse. Sorry about that, folks.

** Please don't spread my rip yet! **

I am going to go through every track and try to repair any dodgy bits. I can patch the faulty Chrono areas from the YouTube rip. It's only a couple of seconds.

Will do this tonight. At work right now.

Forgive me for asking but why would you wanna normalize orchestral peformance? It kinda screws up the 'emotion' in the music since it makes the low volume higher, and the high volume lower.

I think you should use a gain boost or something to increase volume

Cause OWA is impressive on its own...it doesnt need a 'impressive skilled' darbouka player. It was a really annoying part for me to because i was expecting the whole OWA :(

You're misunderstanding normalise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_normalization

I have NOT dynamically compressed! I have merely increased the overall volume so that the proper dynamic range is utilised. In other words, I've just applied uniform gain.

Please, please, whatever you do, don't think that I'm the sort of person who would butcher a recording with ear-shattering dynamics compression! (Search back through my previous posts for a number of lengthy, angry diatribes against this very practice.) ;)

Am I the only one who has no appreciation for Kingdom Hearts and Secret of Mana music in concerts such as this? Part of it must be that I never significantly listened to the soundtracks outside of the game so I never got attached to any of the melodies. Thus none of KH or SoM tracks were very interesting to me. Plus I never really thought Kingdom Hearts had many good melodies to begin with.

On the other hand, the CC/CT track is wonderful and ALMOST perfect but i didn't notice any of Radical Dreamers, my favorite track of all CC/CT music. Thankfully, all the other MAJOR tracks are included so I won't complain too much.

The Final Fantasy track is also well done and of course there is no way to capture the "best" tracks from ALL the games in a 15 minute suite.

Actually KH has a lot of great themes. But they are more subtle than for example FF. It's different music. Different kind of hmmm... sensibility. Personally I think that Shimomura is much better composer than Uematsu and I just love her KH and Legends of Mana music. But to be honest I hate KH as a game (unplayable for me). As for Kikuta's music I never listened to his scores, but I played those great games. So mostly I don't care for the music, but this suite is fantastic! I was really impressed by this. And I was even more surprised, 'cause I wasn't expecting too much. Maybe not catchy, but just great listen:).

And now I can say, that it's one of the best game concerts ever. All suites are great, all are fresh (at last new material! good material!), and performed very good (at least for my ear).

Valtonen's orchestrations are magnificent, aren't they... I get a little fed up of that damn drum thing as well, but everything else... it's ravishing. At the ten minute point in Secret Of Mana, choir and brass hold a single note all playing unison, and then the most subtle key change, the choir splits into two parts with one half singing a semitone higher whilst the other half maintain the previous note - leading into a moment of pure Goldenthalian cascading strings and woodwind - horns and bass strings play the main melody over this, the choir re-enters for a gleaming climax... Love it, love it, love it. These may be some of the most extravagant arrangements of all time.

Yeah what he was referring to though was Velocity of the performance going up and down like ochestral traditionally does. Normalizing it was a good idea just bringing it up a bit.

Compressing it would've been more an issue lol but as long as it doesn't cause unecessary clipping. I don't care. somtimes Orchestral varies velocity too much for my tastes.

These are really entertaining arrangements, but just a little over-fussy and over-orchestrated for me. Still, the concert must rank as one of the finest of its kind.

I think you're referring to 'dynamics'. Velocity means speed in a given direction doesn't it? The speed at which the music's played is called the 'tempo', but no one was going to fiddle around with that :)

I believe dannyfrench just applied gain to a sensible level. There's no compression of dynamics going on.

I'll wait for the Chrono bits to be fixed, but so far the music I've heard is mixed with pure Awesomesauce.

They got lots of positive feedback and are pleased to announce that there will be a CD by the end of the year. And they are also negotiating with the Japanese about a DVD, but there's no date yet.
And they also said that there will be another concert in 2010, which will be called "Symphonic Legends"! (Personally I'm hoping for Nintendo (Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, and so on...))

I personally dont think he was the one responsible for the CD release nor the quality of it, because he was credited for the orchestrations and rearrangements (although some rearrangements where not as good as they could be: Halo...tooo slow!). I think the audio engineers where here to blame for faulty mics, equipment or mastering itself.

It might had something to do with the delay of its release. Maybe some where not happy with the quality, and some not happy to lose customers cause of the delay.

Thanks for the download, Tonedeaf. <3

My favourite concert so far, because the arrangements were fantastic, and with the exception of Kingdom Hearts, the games are all favourites of mine. (Nothing against KH, I simply haven't played the games. XD)
I hope they release a CD. I want to buy it. :)

You are welcome.

I was almost semi disappointed in the Chrono Medley, but then I gave it another listen and found that they did Magus' theme to my exacting specifications (meaning they made it super-epically-awesome.) In fact I'd say the Chrono Medley doesn't reach it's potential until AFTER the ending theme "To Far Away Times" is played. It's somewhat ironic that it doesn't get truly awesome until after you think it's over.

In other news, I am so buying this on CD.

I know what you mean...
Not to complain but i think this arrangement of Frog's Theme was a bit better because to.

But the Chrono Suite overall was better @ Symphonic Fantasies

Tonedeaf: Thanks for sharing.

Valtonen's orchestrations are magnificent, aren't they [...] it's ravishing.

Definitely. I find it amusing that the guy who went to the same music classes as my sister has matured into a wonderful arranger. I'll let him know that you enjoyed his orchestrations. :)

When I watched the concert live, this one sent shivers down my spine. It also helped that it had one of my favourite themes from SoM playing as well. Another wonderful moment goes from 16:00 all the way to the end of SoM part when it slowly builds up to one of the main themes backed by the choir while parts of the orchestra play their own thing.

Also, I'll have to say that I was somewhat troubled how Jonne could handle "The Oracle" (11:30 - 13:20) which is a rather crazy piece in the OST. I was happy to hear that he managed to adapt it well without losing the music's integrity.

As much as I like Secret of Mana's music, I seriously hope that he'll tackle Seiken Densetsu 3 at some point. In my opinion it has better music than SoM and would sound awesome with a big orchestra and choir. ;)

I have just spent some time cutting apart the mp3 SuperBen and "SMaxtor from CetraConnection.de" provided. I now present the Symphonic Fantasies Concert (sans German speakers and most of the applause,) with each piece as a separate track.

Thank you so much I was just sitting down to do same thing. I am wanted to play this on the radio and though that german narrator is cool.. I just does not work on air.

Thanks again !

Did this get pushed back? The Amazon page already posted says December 31, 2010. :(

Edit: According to this (http://www.amazon.com/Symphonic-Fantasies-Wdr-Rundfunkorchester-Koln/dp/B003DQ0ARG) it's now being released on June 8th. Well, that's definitely better than December.

Can anyone tell me what the hell does this mean??

Note that the recording of the finale of the concert will not be included for artistic reasons and will only be released digitally at a later point.

Why the hell won't they include the final piece? It was a nice blending of different tunes and I liked it ...

Really many many thanks for the video recording. I enjoyed it a lot.

On it, between 01:14:01 and 01:17:16 there's a song I do not identify. I'm totally sure it's not part of FINAL FANTASY series, but don't know from which videogame it does come from. Anyone recognizes it?

Anybody has this to re-up?

It's the best audio SMaxtor provided, I would like to have a copy but it's down unfortunately.

I don't have the video recording any more, so I'm not quite sure what part you're referring to - but I'm guessing it's in the Final Fantasy suite!

Jonne Valtonen makes quite liberal use of his own Fanfare Overture throughout the suites - and frequently goes off on a flight of fancy that has very little to do with the original thematic material - possibly you are hearing those sections? The suites aren't just medleys - there's a fair bit of original linking material in there too that holds it all together.

No, it's not FINAL FANTASY at all, I've been in the FINAL FANTASY world for years and I'm totally sure it's not from FINAL FANTASY series. In fact the song I say is not from the concert itself, but from the pause while the people is moving up & downstairs and the radio comments and put music from other games like TETRIS and so on.

That should be "Gem'X (Main Theme)" from the "Symphonic Shades" concert.

Oh, and the link to the audio file seems to work quite well.
