I don't know if anyone has realised this but just after you wake up in Besaid before setting out with Lulu, Yuna and Wakka to the beach, you should go to the girl in the shop who talks about her dog found something.

I thought I had to wait until after you get the airship but...

You can get it at this point. I went to the house on the far upper left and talked to the dog and I obtained the Overdrive. I didn't know that until now, but I think it gives me a better chance to complete the game now.

I'm going to see if there are any more things I can do before advancing the game and having to wait until you obtain the airship, does anyone know about any others by any chance?

YES. Right after you get to Macalania Woods and get the first Jecht Sphere, go back to Besaid Island to pick up the Jecht sphere outside the temple. For AGES I didn't know you could do this and had to fight Dark Valefor to get it wich is a bummer. Goign back can take a while but it is worth it in my opinion.

I'd take the bummer of having to fight Dark Valefor to get that over the bummer of not being able to fight Dark Valefor at all any day.

I just Zanmato'd Dark Valefor out of the way because I need to do the Besaid Trials.

How did you get back to Besaid Island? Isn't it far? Especially how they won't let you back on the shoopuf again.

Wouldn't you have to get on the airship and play the game a little while longer or can you REALLY do that?

Right After you get the first Sphere in Macalania woods after defeating Spherimorph the shoopuf is open again, so you can go back to Besaid. It doesn't take that long really. It does mean though you can collect all the Jecht spheres(except the Gagazet one) quite quickly. Then when you DO get the Gagazet one. Lo and behold you have got ALL of Aurons overdrives fairly early in the game. Talking to various people on the way back is also fun as dialogue has changed. Here are the Jecht Locations. (just in case)
