Well, personally, my theory is that Phoenix Downs only revive a person who faints from battle exhaustion. If the wound is VERY fatal, like getting shot through the heart or getting stabbed in the back, like poor Aerith, then they won't work.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that...

SPOILER REGARDING ANOTHER FF GAME

Aeris/th is hardly the first/major playable character to die in an FF game. In Final Fantasy V, Galuf went out in a big scene in which he used up all his energy against XDeath. XDeath KOed him and yet he kept fighting and fighting and eventually it was said something like "his spirit flickered out." Anyone who's played the game knows this-- once the other playables realize what has happened to Galuf, they actually Cure, Phoenix Down, Life, everything, but it doesn't work. So yeah, these people that think they're so swift "Oh, just use phoenix down!" -- it's actually been shown dramatically in another FF that it won't work for something like this.

People die in IV left and right. They get brought back in the Advance version, though.

You know, what's interesting is that even before the big one, another major character is killed in the exact same way-- President Shinra. And yet you never hear anybody going "whoa, Phoenix Down!" about that.


Of course characters can be killed for good! If that weren't the case, if they were indestructible, then that would really put a twist in the dynamic, wouldn't it?!

Because the Twins willingly used Break on themselves. Remember, at least on DS, Tellah used Esuna on them, and explained that to the others.

But the Mysidian Elder was able to restore them, with no explanation. I'm assuming:

A.) Being the head of a Mage village, he'd have access to some bit of ancient magic that would overpower that magical law, or maybe he had a group of magi from the village band together..

or

B.) Being their teacher/mentor, maybe the Twins' spirits or whatever reacted to him, accepted the fact that they didn't need to be wall-holding statues anymore, and let him restore them. Remember, Break doesn't KO, you're just immobile. Keep your Hp/Mp, just a status thingy like paralysis.

AERITH!!! Also if you think about it, in FF X how come whenever someone dies in who's a main character can be pheonixed but everyone else turns into a ghost? And also Auron turns into a ghost and yet he can still be pheonixed. IT MAKES NO SENSE!!! Why does Auron need to be pheonixed if he's dead? Can't he just do a Seymour?

If you didn't not phoenix Auron and he doesn't not turn into a ghost, then you shouldn't not just try using Seymour instead of that if it didn't work.

Yeah I always thought Phoenix down as a cure for being KO'd not DEAD. it just doesn't make sense for the characters to keep dying multiple times during the game and yet somehow, with a somewhat cheap item, be brought back to life.

Phoenix downs are some funky stuff. More like a bucket of feathery water to wake you up.
