Silent Hill is well known for its scary soundtracks, and of the four installments I've played(1-3, Origins), it's not disappointed.

The Resident Evil REmake is also masterful in its music. I think it was the only RE game where music, rather than the absence of it, gave more shivers.

The Zombie theme in Conker's Bad Fur Day after you killed Batula. Not really sure if you can call it music, but it was indeed creepy as hell. You could hear moaning and children laughing, and the zombies popped out of nowhere.. the sound of it couldn't be described.

The reason I think Doom is scary beacause of the monsters trying to sneek up on you and surprise attacks.
I haven't played the game, but I've watched my Dad play it when I was little, but I wasn't really scared that time.
I know it's weird.

The music when you battle the final G-Virus form of William Birkin in Resident Evil 2 had a distinct creepiness to it. Along with a shrill almost possessed opera singers voice to top it off. The early resident evils had a great way of freaking you out :)

This track was scary as hell when you were navigating deep underwater, desperate for air. On a side note, it's damn near impossible to collect 2D bubble sprites in a 3D environment.
Banjo-Kazooie (N64) - The Haunted Church (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz4VAHjgmw4&feature=PlayList&p=E54CC18179554B82&index=69): I remember first hearing this music watching "snippets" of gameplay on the title screen. Leave it to a kids game to conjure up images and thoughts of death.

Eternal Darkness (GC) - A Purpose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqC6W61Gyl4&feature=PlayList&p=6CC2B4CEEE8E69A7&index=0) (starting from 2:00): I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet! This is the music that played when your sanity meter was running low. Positively bone-chilling!
Eternal Darkness (GC) - The Gift of Forever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JC13_TlBaRw&feature=PlayList&p=6CC2B4CEEE8E69A7&index=2): I might actually have enjoyed this track if it weren't for that voiceover at the very beginning. Share that line with anyone in a decent mood and they're in for a bonekill the likes of which they've never seen.

Resident Evil (GC) - Vacant Room (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BsPyu8jQ4w&feature=channel_page): I think one of the first images you see when this music first plays is a moose's head mounted on a wall. Whose eyes, by the way, glow red when you turn off the lights. Yikes.
Resident Evil 5 (X360) - Executioner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nQSfyYmoHo&feature=PlayList&p=0DB42B60626735D6&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=20): You don't even need to play the game to understand why this ranks high on the chill factor. The screeching violins are reminiscent of the original Psycho soundtrack.

I'd say the music from the Silent Hill series, although not scary at all IMO, but sometimes unnerving and/or tense. Same with scores for games like Dead Space and the earlier Res Evil games.

As for games itself, never really played a game I'd call scary, although the atmospheres in games like the Silent Hill games, Dead Space, the Siren games can be tense, but not scary. When I was much younger like 10-12 years ago, I always found the original PSX Clock Tower creepy. The crap controls and the music didnt help.

Plenty from the Mother series.

Even some tracks from the Kirby series are quite scary-- which is one of those sorts of factors that makes the series unique.

Yume Nikki's soundtrack is certainly terrifying, but also quite depressing and oppressive.

Ah, I find that song to be more sad than scary. From Mother 1, I find the underground theme to be the scariest. It's a very foreboding song, especially for the NES. Then again, Hirokazu Tanaka was easily the best at mood pieces on the NES (see also: Metroid), for sure. He's the reason the first two Mother games had such a surreal or dark atmosphere about them at times.

-this one would creep up my spine bc I would listen carefully for the soft fade in to know he was coming

Ghost Dance - Monkey Island 1 (PC) - (no link :( )
-This one sounds silly, but the chimes toward the middle always made me jump

Agreed, RE's music is pretty scary. When I played Ocarina of Time as a kid, that one particular dungeon that exists under the graveyard in Kakariko Village freaked me out, with especially chilling music. Still kind of does.

Not to mention a few tracks from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask:
Majora's theme
All battle themes against Majora, especially the first one.

For me, Clock Tower. Dear God, the dead silence....hearing nothing but your own footsteps.... not knowing when and where Scissorman will come out... The bgm made it even worse. :ashine:

I've only heard 2 seconds of this and I had to pause it. I just don't want to listen to it.

I don't have many horror games but the menu music on Return to Castle Wolfenstein PS2 scared the crap out of me way back when.

Michiru Yamane's Requiem of the Gods from Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Something about the grinding organs and wind instruments really suits the setting of the Royal Chapel, and is even more spooky going through the room with the church interior background scaling as you move (all the while trying to avoid being skewered on the damn Poltergeist Swords). Erie, haunting and oh so good. :)

Castle Zvahl by Naoshi Mizuta from FFXI would probably run a close second. The theme of the Shadowlord's haunted mansion is definitely oppressive and spooky, especially as it doesn't actually play til you reach the actual inner Keep of the Castle, having just spent nearly an hour navigating the labyrinthine outer Baileys to arrive in the castle proper. And what a theme it is.

I still remember the first time I heard it while on my way to fight Raogrimm's demonic alter ego in 2007. I nearly wet myself in fear hearing the dark oppressive piece suddenly come through previously quiet speakers. I remember thinking; "Oh shit. I'm screwed. Utterly, totally, screwed."

Definitely fitting for what was the final dungeon of the game originally. Still an awesome piece of music. :)
