Hello everyone, this is my first post on the forums (and a new thread too, so presumptuous of me!). This looks like a great community you have here.
I'm sure most members of this forum are aware of the new teaser page on Square Enix's Japanese website. When game companies release trailers, it is the responsibility of forum users like us to speculate, so lets hear the theories!
Summary: The teaser site here (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/0706/) shows a sketch of a countryside by a river, and a boy riding a dragon. The number '4' is superimposed on the whole scene. In the background music similar to that of the NES/GameBoy era is played. The website features a countdown timer which is at 141 hours at time of posting. In all likelihood a new game will be announced at the end of the countdown.
Speculation has run rampant, from people claiming that a new DragonQuest/FinalFantasy/Seiken Densetsu game will be released, to speculation of ports or re-releases. The '4' makes many speculate that the 4th game in a series is going to be released.
My personal opinion is that we are likely to see SaGa 4 announced. SaGa (AKA Final Fantasy Legend in North America) is a notable franchise owned by square which currently contains 2 series which have 3 games each. The original SaGa series ended at SaGa 3, and the Romancing SaGa series has also seen 3 entries. Other games have been released under the SaGa name, but they are offshoots without numbers.
Additionally, the music played on the page sounds very very similar to the overworld music from Final Fantasy Legend (SaGa) 1. You can listen to the music from the game here (http://www.fantasyanime.com/saga/fflmusic.htm).
Although many people dream of a new game from another franchise, this is unlikely, as most other franchises have a 4th entry already. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) already have a 4th entry each. Chrono, Kingdom Hearts, do not currently have any games numbered '3' yet, so they are unlikely. It could be a port of a '4' game, but then probably not Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, because they were both remade recently for DS already, and in any case this amount of advertising effort would be unlikely to accompany a port.
So let the speculation begin!
