Well, I presume you're having trouble against Jenova BIRTH on the Cargo Ship, which is level 25. So if your party is around this level or close to it, you should stand a chance. If you have Aeris in your party, use her for healing, and have Cloud and the remaining character hit Jenova with magic and powerful physical attacks.

Jenova is water elemental, so strong fire and ice attacks deal considerable damage to it (especially if you managed to learn the enemy skills Flamethrower and Beta earlier, use them, as it deals enormous damage to the fiend). Also, use the Choco/Mog summon materia, as it may have a chance of stunning the fiend (Aeris's second Limit Break Seal Evil is useful for doing this too).

If you're still too low however, simply run around the Engine Room of the Cargo Shipand fight in random battles for some quick levelling - the Shinra Marines you can fight there give reasonable experience, and you can steal Shinra Beta armour from them if you equipped the Steal materia.

Also, it goes without saying, immediately after the fight, don't forget to grab the Ifrit summon materia left behind by Jenova, as this is the only chance you can get it (until much much later in the game).

Tip before u leave junon: train in the grey corridor to the underwater reactor. set the alarm off next to the soldiers and train on the random battles by defeating the smog monsters at level 50 with enemy skills like beta from the midgar zolom and matra magic from the custom sweepers outside midgar.
you should reach lvl 20 to lvl 40 in no time. no need to train on disc 1 then

I'll go with what everyone has says so far, as long as you can match your enemy's level by using the sense materia, you will be fine. Always be a level or two higher then the enemy.

Meh, as long as you have the best weapons/armor at the moment and you've slotted materia that can suit your needs, you should be fine at level 23-25. This whole, "match your enemy's level" is for pussies.

I train too much, hence making the game boring...
Why not just try it with the best equipment available like the previous post said?
Equip your best materia and make it a challenge. Don't even think about the levels!

How the fuck does Enkidoh remember everything to that level of detail is the real question. ><

Obviously Enkidoh has a decent memory and is confident in their ability with the game. That and, he/she has been through it recently.

Well, yes and no. I did do another play through of FFVII recently on the PC version however, so I guess it was fresh in my mind.

I did also use the official strategy guide for reference so I had that to fall back on as well. In the end though, I guess as FFVII is one of my favourite FF games I just try to help people struggling in it (it's probably the White Mage in me responsible for that ;)).

Nostalgia probably accounts for some of it too I guess. ;)
