You heard me, ONLY ONE! Some comment as to why you chose it would be nice.

Mine's Vagrant Story, hands down.

Played it for the first time last month - yeah, I was nine years late - on my PS2 and it was mindblowing amazing. The cinematique, story, music, script, scenario, complex and engaging battle system made me love this game like no other, as well as recognize it as marvelous achievement on the hardware. I was so overall amazed by all its depth that when I think back, it's even hard for me to remember it was not a PS2 game, lol!

In short, I'd say it was one of the games that reminded me why we, gamers, still play RPGs.

So, what's yours?

It came down to the Lunar and Suikoden series, but I'll go with Suikoden II.

By the way, I stopped playing Xenogears about a year ago, around where you have to fight in a tournament, but maybe I'll pick it up again based on that recommendation.

Chrono Cross

And the reason is because it is so epic. The score is one of the best out there, the CG cut scenes are amazing, the story, the replay value, combat system... do you want me to continue? It's just a great game and it's actually the only PS1 game that I own because I recently purchased it off eBay w/ the strategy guide because I was feeling nostalgic.

I'd say 7 or 8 but they were PC games before they were PS1 games, hence why u still see the midi files still flying around. So if ur gonna be ps1 exclusive locke, ud better have a go at half of us here.

Final Fantasy VII (ファイナルファンタジーVII, Fainaru Fantajī Sebun?) is a console role-playing game developed by Square (now Square Enix) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment as the seventh installment in the Final Fantasy series. It was released in 1997 for Sony's PlayStation and in 1998 for Microsoft's Windows-based personal computers.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Released: Nov 15, 1996

This is probably my favorite role playing game growing up. Sure i love the final fantasy stories but this was the first real vampire game i got to play. It had a great story if you can follow it and understand as I know it could be confusing. Plus it was an open ended world with many secrets and places to explore. Personally my favorite part was during this big war that happened in the game it was pretty sweet. The rest of the Legacy of Kain games are alright but this is the original and is just amazing and has great voice acting. truly great rpg of the PS1 era.
Some places have it listed as Action/Adventure while other list it as RPG, which i'm quite sure it is an RPG.

lenneth
06-04-2009, 07:44 PM
I'm okay with people calling the final fantasy series and its ilk RPGs since they are almost exclusively advertised/sold as such (even if they are technically jrpgs), but I'll never understand why people call games like Zelda "RPGs" or in this case, Legacy of Kain. Hate to pull a prak here, but why are you quite sure its an RPG?

WhiteAltair
06-04-2009, 08:16 PM
Just basically from what an rpg is defined as for example the PC, gets more power as the story progresses, sure Legacy of Kain didnt use a level system, but your health and mana grow as well. You gain powers from defeating bosses, you also adopt the role of a character, there's the main story quest, as well as finding all the secret locations. Sure it doesn't have the menus like a FF battle, its more real time but i don't think you can call a game an rpg cuz it has some battle menu. Your assuming the role of a fictions character in a fantasy world isn't that what some Role Playing Games are? or am I wrong? please enlighten me if I am. I get my sources from various people and sites, i mean is WoW not an rpg it is live action battles but i do believe there is some sort of system working there b/c the character will wait but its not set up the older FF games.

prak would probably be more articulate in the definition of an RPG. And what exactly RPG has become to mean (in terms of jRPGs). The "role" of a pre-made character is not a role at all, in terms of RPGs. I guess as far as the definition has been stretched, there's no reason an action/adventure game can't be lumped (inaccurately) into the same category. Games like Fallout or the Elder Scrolls series are RPGs because you create the character and essentially *are* the character. Final Fantasy and the ilk have either silent protragonists or characters with prescripted dialog who can select from a limited number of story-line options but you're still essentially just watching a script unfold by moving a dude from point a to point b. RPGs, in the sense of jRPGs, come from the interpretation of: levels + skills [strength, intelligence, whatever] = RPG. In that sense, WoW is an RPG and possibly even more so than FF or other jRPGs because at least you have more control over who your character is, what he says, what he does, etc.

Prak and a couple others are more sticklers for this than I am. I've always argued in threads like this that when someone asks "what's your favorite RPG" they are generally referring to jRPGs and so I overlook the misnomer, since even in game stores, Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger are listed as RPGs. For someone unfamiliar with the true RPG genre, how should they know the difference? But it seems weird to me to be like "well even though people call it action/adventure, i'm certain its an RPG!" Hell, you could argue that bubble-bobble is an RPG because you control one character and he has health/life points that go down.

WhiteAltair
06-05-2009, 02:29 AM
Well not only did i say people call it action/adventure on sites it's also listed as rpg. When i think to action/adventure i think of like tomb raider, and games like drakes fortune. But I had never known of Jrpg i'm assuming its Japanese RPG? I just always viewed Rpgs as Rpgs no Jrpgs or w/e and that some games were more rpgish then other like TES or Fallout. Then, with your theory on a true rpg is were you create your own character and stuff couldn't Madden, WWE, UFC 2009, or any other sports game where you can create a person be labeled as that? You follow a story, You gain attributes, You get more powerful so would this be classified as Sports RPG? Im not trying to be a dick i'm just stating my view on it if you classify an rpg as you ARE the character you create.

lenneth
06-05-2009, 02:42 AM
I'm probably a bit inarticulate on my definition of an RPG. When I first started playing video games, I was unfamiliar with pen & paper stuff, which is where the term RPG even comes from. The essence of an RPG is not the stats or the levels or even the character creation (that's my own error in emphasizing that in my previous post), but rather the interactions your character has with others (this I did reference in my previous post when talking about the lack of any meaningful interaction in most jRPGs or action/adventure games).

You can't really argue what a true "role-playing game" is. The definition has been bastardized and changed over time and allows for a ton of other genres to fit the category. The more its inaccurate definition changes, the more games/genres get tacked under the title of "RPG". FF and LoK are probably just as far apart from a "true RPG", but FF at least falls more properly under the standard "incorrect" definition of RPG (jrpg). I don't know how Tomb Raider (or any other action/adventure game) is different from Legacy of Kain, really, as far as your definition. ie. why call one an rpg and the other action/adventure?

I'm mostly just nit-picking. ;o

I feel like a bit of a hypocrite for always arguing with Prak about him getting on people's backs about this. I guess I have been more enlightened recently :O I should dig up some of his posts because they express the whole thing a lot more clearly than I can.

WhiteAltair
06-05-2009, 02:51 AM
I know about the pen & Paper stuff as I use to own D&D stuff as well as other games like it.
Well with tomb raider i haven't played it since that anniversary edition had come up. But as far as I remember LoK was different in the way you (not the fact that one is slightly more realistic then the other in sense of vampire/human) did the quests, find relics to increase your power. W/ tomb raider it was like go into this cave run from wolves, watch out for the weird t-rex and kill the butler in the training room.
Well whatever the case is some people find it RPG other find it action/adventure, my point of view its rpg, it was my favorite ps1 rpg and that's basically it. lol

Blameless
06-05-2009, 03:40 AM
Stat advancement (in whatever form), equipment systems, or particular gameplay mechanics (e.g. menus), are not what makes an RPG.

The ability to make meaningful choices (e.g. resulting in significant plot consequences), regarding those whose roles you have assumed, is what makes an RPG.

I would argue that Blood Omen - Legacy of Kain is not an RPG. The player has virtually no significant choices outside of combat, and the plot will playout the same regardless of what the player does. Kain holds the same opinion, states the same lines, and works twoard the same goals, via mostly the same methods, regardless of player input. If there is any character development (outside of game mechanics), it's well out of the player's control.

I think "acton/dventure" fits the game perfectly. It has a story and setting to explore, as well as combat oriented gameplay.

Personally, I think it's a great game, but it's not really an RPG. That said, role-playing is what one does, not what something is. With the right mind set, you can take on, and play, the role of just about anything.

WhiteAltair
06-05-2009, 04:14 AM
Alright then lol i will argue this from your argument. In Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, there is a story, and a setting to explore, as well combat oriented game play. So then is Oblivion a action/adventure too?
I agree with the ability to make meaningful choices
but in Blood Omen if i want to get technical you do have a
choice of an outcome at the end of the game. Sacrifice Kain, or Damn Nosgoth.
But your in the end i guess its what you believe it is and
that's what i stated in my last post, its an rpg to me
and i couldn't care what anyone said unless the maker
of the game came personally to me and told me otherwise.

Blameless
06-05-2009, 01:41 PM
Such categories need not be mutually exclusive. Oblivion can be called an action/adventure just as correctly as an RPG. There are also games that fit RPG better than Legacy of Kain that are also first person shooters.

Yes, Legacy of Kain does have a few choices and other RPG elements to it. So does Counter-Strike.

If we agree that the classification of a game is up to personal interpretation, why should the creator of the game (who never called in an RPG in the first place) saying otherwise sway your opinion?

WhiteAltair
06-05-2009, 04:18 PM
Well they're the ones who made it, and probably have an idea of what
they were aiming at when they made it. So I guess your right that if I thought it was an Rpg and the creators said it was not it wouldn't matter. It doesn't really matter anymore anyways this is my favorite rpg, end of story
thanks for different opinions and arguments lol.

I played Wild ARMs before Final Fantasy VII, and that was a pretty good game. Graphically wise it was below average compared to FFVII and the music was really good that it got me hook to that composer (which slips my mind currently). Oh, I loved the story of Wild ARMs that I attempted a fanfic. That one name still lingers in my mind... Odoryuk.

Others (Final Fantasy VII of course is one of them):
- Grandia, I enjoyed on the Saturn even though it was ported to the PSX.
- Beyond the Beyond, only had good music to it.
- Koudelka, game I haven't beaten because I kept freezing at a certain point.
- Persona 1, besides the english voices the story was good
- Saga Frontier, god dam this game was hard but the music was good.
- Legend of Dragoon, was sorta annoying at some points.
- Xenogears, an RPG that didn't keep my interest that much but it was a new concept.
- Final Fantasy Tactics & Vandal Hearts was too hard for me to play.
- Rhapsody (Adventures of the Puppet Princess), way too fricking easy.
- Star Ocean: The Second Story, I loved that game.
- Tales of Destiny, didn't interest me much.

JP games:
- Guardian Recall, Music is awesome
- Seishiroukan Princess of Darkness, I just leveled up my characters up and they were just strong.
- Madou Monotagiri (Puyo Puyo), fun game but beat it on Saturn.
- Little Princess, a little harder than Rhapsody but I beat it.
- Soukaigi (if I even consider this an RPG) was really hard.

For me it's a toss up between Final Fantasy IX and Suikoden. Final Fantasy IX loses points for getting a little too preachy at the end, but overall it's forgivable because the game makes the whole "existing" storyline work because the characters are built in a somewhat realistic matter (from a personality standpoint). Lots of interaction between characters and time for them to grow makes it a relatable cast.

Suikoden just reeks of awesomeness. The only way to describe it is every RPG cliche done right. But somehow every town, character, and environment still manages to spark just the right emotions inside me to make me care. Couple that with the fun of building your castle and the mini-games....it's a tough choice.

Final Fantasy IX wins out though, despite the Suiko-fanboywhore in me.

Well, it was Wild ARMs if you couldn't figure it out. I guess my obligatory comment was trying to answering the non-existent 'why'? Sorry.

No apology necessary. I definitely understood Wild Arms. It was just that you mentioned good stuff about every game except Tales. So I got curious why it was there among the 'favourites'.

Only one huh?

Well, out of all the RPG's I've enjoyed, I'll go with Xenogears. That game had a big impact on me.

Maybe thats not 'nuff said.

It's my favourite. Like the Thread Topic suggests.

And fyi, I've played all the FFs for PS1. I'm currently working through downloading and playing through all of the others, like Wild Arms, Suikoden, Lunar Star, etc. I've also played half of Vagrant Story (mediocre at best), and I'm currently playing the PSP remake of Star Ocean (First Departure), which is still technically a PS1 RPG. I've probably dabbled in others but my memory is hazy, it is 1:30 AM and I've been feeling light-headed all day anyway, so I cannot remember.

first departure is a remake of the original star ocean, which was on super famicom and not translated/released to the US. Star Ocean: The Second Story (Second Evolution on PSP) was on PSX.

If this is a question of which game creates the most nostalgia for me then the answer is Final Fantasy IX. I just wish now, that during my 10-16 year old stage I had vested more interest in the likes of Xenogears, Chrono Cross and Vagrant Story, and not Final Fantasy VII. (Though on recollection, I did own a copy of Vagrant Story).

Anyway, vote for the worse game on the PS1 (which I also had) - Punky Skunk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punky_Skunk).

Ah, I see.

Star Ocean (Super Famicon) - Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP)
Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1) - Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP)

Is simplez!

Thank you for clearing that up. I was under the impression SO1 was for PS1. Silly me.

Hehe~

Crafty Squeenix

Mind you, it's a nice layout. Very easy to use, and very easy to get used to. Battles mainly consist of:

- Mash X
- Then again
- And again
- Consider pressing L or R to unleash a special attack
- Decide against it and just mash X again
- Victory! 300EXP and a Rusty Dagger obtained.

I'll probably download the famicon version and see what it's like. Even though it'll all be in Japanese...

Right, but even beside that point, Wild Arms 4 was just really boring and just didnt seem to have the effort the first 3 did. And yes, the western theme was there unique thing, too bad they ditched it.

I only played the demo of it but thought it was good.

The Final Fantasy games are only a small portion of available RPG's on the PSX. What annoys me is how some people think that only RPG's (IE. The Final Fantasy Series) by Square are worth playing.

Put a spoiler tag on that shit man. I haven't heard of half those games.

I will throw up some Front Mission 3, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, and the Suikoden/Star Ocean/Lunar games though. Fantastic.

And you can't possibly tell me you've played all those games, nor that all those games are worth playing. Just because Gamefaqs has a completed (is it?) library of ps1 rpg's doesn't mean that they are all worth the mention in a favorites thread.

Edit: And Breath of Fire is amazing.

I gotta be honest; the only PSX RPGs I've ever played are FF titles, so that's all I have to choose from. Even Vagrant Story, the closest possible thing to one that's not one, I've never played or even knew anything about until I read about it somewhere in this forum. I had a demo disc years back that included Brave Fencer Musashi that I always wanted to get, just could never find.

So, the answer I'm gonna have to go with here is FFIX.

I put that list there as a reference to all of the other RPG's available for the PlayStation, NOT that I have played all of them. That list was just to refer to all of the other RPG's available for the PSX/PS1. As I stated at the end of that post, the majority of people who I know myself, state a FF game as their personal favorite and have no idea of any other RPG's available.

Some people play games with blinders on and are oblivious to any other RPG which isn't made by Square.

There ARE other RPG's besides the FF games. That's all. I am NOT attacking anyone for their opinion on what they consider the best or their favorite.

Sheesh.

Except for the fact that he's usually right about that sort of thing.

Good damn luck with that, bro. I'm still kicking myself for parting with my copy of SSSC. I have EB, and it's very charming and quite good, but it feels a bit like a rehash of SSSC.

Loses the thread.

Im sorry but FFVII is the only RPG i liked on PS1. Most of my other RPG's I played are on N64, PS2, PS3, Xbox, and Xbox 360.

Not to pick at anyone's posts here, but there are many other RPG's on the PSX/PS1 besides the FF series.

Expand your tastes in games people!

I do expand my tastes in games but most of the rpg's I played were not on PS1 they were either on PS2, PS3, or Xbox 360.

back on PS1 I played mostly adventure and shooter type of games.

Yeah, wish I had Eternal Blue as well. Oh well, but definitely one of my favorite RPGs. Still love the theme song from the original Sega CD release. Might pick up for PSP but that limited edition still doesn't hold a candle to Working Designs one.

Could also try Swapmeets, Flea Markets, Second Hand stores etc.

I got a mint condition copy of Super Empire Strikes Back from a secondhand store for 2$AUS. The Box was in new condition, the manual and even the safety manual Nintendo bundled with games back then, weren't torn or falling apart. The game cartridge itself was still in the plastic wrap and the whole box was still shrinkwrapped.

I pissed off two of the clerks there, who wanted the game as well, when I bought it lol

Because clearly, there hasn't been any time at all to grab any games you may have missed since then. It's not like ebay or Amazon exist. At any rate, newbies with Sephy usernicks, avas, and sig pics are easy targets--perhaps too easy.

Again, good damn luck. I'm sure there are several copies of SSSC available, but you'll be paying out the nose for one. Last time I looked, which admittedly is a long time ago, copies were going for 70+ USD.

I agree completely. With Ebay, it's a game of luck to get what you bid on.
I just did a search on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com) and found Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (http://video-games.shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=Lunar+Silver+Star+Story+Complete&_sacat=1249), about thirty copies for sale, ranging from 30$USD to 200$USD. So it depends mainly on A: How badly you want it and B: How much you're willing to spend to get it.

Psycho_Cyan
12-29-2009, 08:26 AM
Yeah. The shape of the game is another consideration. An actual "complete" SSSC will go for probably twice as much as a non-complete. Then there's whether or not the game is mint. But even with pictures, ebay sure can be like Forrest Gump's box o'chocolates, iykwim.

Reading comprehension ftw, pal. I called you a newbie because of your two-digit post count. On a slightly related note, you may be surprised to find out how many FFVII fankids come through with Sephy usernicks, avvy's, and/or sig's. Many wind up leaving before their post count hits triple digits because the rest of FFS doesn't care about their CloudxSephy yaoi fanfic or we don't agree that ZOMG FFVII IS THE BESTEST EVAR or whatever fanwanking they spew here. With that in mind, many of us (us being shriners who've been around a while) see the Sephy kit and naturally assume that the owner is another one of 'those.' Basically, it's guilty until proven innocent in the eyes of many of us. For what it's worth, while you haven't proven your "innocence," I at least have a reasonable doubt about you, iykwim.

You have your opinion about FFVII. Everyone else has their own opinion of FFVII. From my perspective, FFVII is overrated, and I do have my reasoning for that.

However, I will not go into detail about those reasons in this thread. I have already stated my feelings about FFVII in threads in the FFVII forum section. So let's not derail this thread anymore. It hooked me on the series and I've now played most of them. FFVII and FFVIII are also good PS1 RPG's. just started Vagrant story which I bought off the PSN yesterday. I think I'm opposite to you on that. I think the battle system is good but magic stocking becomes a chore and enemies levelling with you gives no incentive to try and become stronger. The story I feel is one of the best in FF (so far, I've just got to the part after the TV station incident in Timber, where you go to galbadian garden)

Story was meh in an RPG? Seriously? You though FF8 had so much to offer in the gameplay front so you just ignored the story? The story was crap, I do not play RPGs for a one dimensional love story, but the game play itself was terrible in FF8, the game just totalized the stupid soft gay story line they seem to do in every JRPG these days... I mean it's not like that cool Hard Homosexuality like it was back in the 80s. The fucking linking/drawing magic was just stupid busy work. And you had to watch a tutorial on every fucking thing.

I agree about FF8 most shitful storyline ever in jRPG, Didn't Played Faxanadu, but Chrono Trigger is awesome, but I didn't feel that the RPG's were mastered at SNES, I don't know, I prefered Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story & FFT Storylines over the most RPG's in SNES(I'm not Including Chrono Trigger, the aproach of the story in that game is just way to different in comparison to the most RPG's of SNES), it's just like that, 16 bit RPG's storylines had a lot more MacGuffins in comparison to PSX, It's just my experience, Of course there are a lot more stupid RPG's than good in both Consoles, but everyone has his own choice to what pick up.
I think the really decay of the jRPG's is the PS2, I mean we have out of the laboratory shitty games as FF X-2 & Shadow Hearts 2 & 3, very disturbing games.

The first 2 have all kinds of epic sequences, including 2 of my favourites from any FF (Assasination attempt on Edea, and the Battle of the Gardens). The last 2 discs are just silly though, and focus almost exclusively on the dull Squinoa romance.

FF9 was a similar experience. I really enjoyed the first disc and a bit, but when you left the Mist Continent, the game plummets in interest. Seriously, the Mist Continent has loads of great locations and action sequences, but the outer continents... don't. Being captured off-screen at the Desert Palace is still the biggest, lamest cop-out ever, too.

So I'll be really boring and say FF7.

Oh Vry... You boring bored man... xD

Kinda thread necro oh well. I'm a sucker of the PS1, my fauvorite console ever.

I can't name which one is my fauvorite, but you can throw a dice with these ones.

Final Fantasy VII, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy Tactics.

Some Honorable mentions, Legend Of Mana, Chrono Cross, Suikoden I & II.

The only downsides for me with FFIX were, for one, after Disc 2 it seems that you're taken too far out of your way and forced to take far too long to complete places that seem very trivial for their overtly long length. Oeilvert, Ipsen's Castle, etc. The other is the DAMN SHIMMERING ISLAND!!! Once you're in, there's no turning back to level up, so if you're not strong enough to fight your way through, you better start the hell over again ASAP. Yes, start THE WHOLE GAME OVER!!! I was fortunate enough to have a cousin who loves (well, at least loved) FF games many years back and helped me through the parts leading up to it so I was leveled enough. That was before I became good at RPGs. . . .

I have to go with Tales of Destiny 2. The awesome story and side scroll action battles with a really nice soundtrack makes this game, in my opinion, untouchable.

So many games to list it's very hard to narrow it down. I really want to say Xenogears but if I go by amount of time put into and amount of times replayed I will have to go with Final Fantasy Tactics.

Favourite RPG? If it wasn't for the sheer overating of the FF series, I would have gone for FFIX. However, no matter how much I love that game (I actually love almost all FFs) It's still overrated, and drives me off. So I'm going to say Digimon World 3 was my favourite RPG.

Digimon World 3? wow... That's a different one.

I played that one & never finished it. I've got after you leave Amaterasu Server. Then my patience bar was empty after that.

i'm gonna choose "tales of destiny 2", the battle, the story, skills, magic, it was awesome dude,,

but valkyrie profile, FFIX, FF VIII, Chrono Cross, Chrono trigger, are worth to play though,,

Legend of Mana. It had such an odd and charming world that sucked me right in. There were a lot of great rpg's on the system.

Man it's hard to pick between Final Fantasy 7 and Tactics. Both had excellent stories, but i'll go with Tactics for the sheer fact it's gameplay was as addicting as crack cocaine.

Definitely Chrono Cross
The Story, The gameplay, and the fact that there are so many characters!

Final Fantasy 7.

I looked back at the PS1 games I played back then, and noticed that I hardly got any RPGs for it. I lost interest in them at around that time, and I didn't notice. I mostly got games in all other genres, like racing, action, sports, and platformers. None of the RPGs on the PS1 interested me. I didn't get back into RPGs until I got a DS.
