So last Oct my wonderful, backwards compatable, memory stick sloted, chromed-out 60GB (250GB upgrade) PS3 yellow light of death-ed on me. To avoid a panic, I didn't say anything. Thinking $150 is not worth the repair cost through Sony, since it's only guaranteed for 90 days, I ended up buying a new 80GB PS3. I have not been as happy since. I ended up keeping my old PS3 as a neat looking "display" to "ooh" and "aww" at.

On to the good news!

I've been searching for an easy, cheap fix all these months searching through the PS message boards and google and my answer was found 2 nights ago on a YouTube video that was posted on the PS message boards. After carefuly watching the video a few times, showing how to reflow the solder on both the CPU and GPU, I picked up a $10 heat gun at my local Joann craft shop, some thermal compound from Radioshack and 3 hours later, last night, I have a working PS3 again! I'll post the video I watched later tonight when I'm on a regular computer. For now I'm happy to say it works again. :D

In all fairness, it was an early model. They tend to over heat.

I can tell you that there's a huge difference in both systems. The newer models you and I have don't get nearly as hot and is very quiet. On my old system, the fans really kick in pretty loud after about 10 minutes of gaming. That's what I love about the newer models, almost no heat.

They offer a add-on for PS2 compatability in the store, but it didn't work on my model. Why are they even offering it, if the 60s are the only ones with the Emotion Engine, or w/e it was called?

I can't imagine how it would work. :/

Marv you should give me your 80 gigger, because you love me. And for my birthday.

I'll pay for it, too. ;o

I had already thought about giving it to my nephew since he's been wanting one, but then I though I wouldn't be surprised if my 60GB broke again. I'd be left with one PS3 if I wasn't able to fix it again.

I've only got a 40GB PS3, so i was thinking about buying a 60GB one (for backwards compatibility), because my PS2 is dead and i have a library of unplayed PS2 games begging for attention.

Now i'm not so sure <.<

That's not you in those videos :o

But he is subscribed to Phil, so A+ in my book.

I never said that was me, I said that was the video I watched on how to reflow the CPU and GPU. :p....

Raidenex, you can always get one of the earlier 80GB models with bc.

REFLOW

itp: I admit something

I didn't read the second paragraph of your original post. I was too busy worring about containment after you mentioned the ya know.....don't want to say it outloud, and all~

I'll appreciate it more, though. :)

here is the problem to everyones solutions! Ignore what I'm saying and just hack your PSPs!

(translation)

(Here is the solution to your problem, just mod PS3 since its out of warranty!) I forget who asked about bc and I'm to lazy to look back and copy and paste this.

OR

When you feel like playing some PS2 games, just take 30 seconds out of your life to hook it up and start playing. If anybody does start trying to chip/mod their PS3s and they break, I want you to know i'm glad and that i'm also laughing at you.

Good job fixing yours by the way Marvin! Mine is one of the newer 80GB ones anyway, so I don't think I'll have the problem. But if I do then it's nice to know I may be able to fix it.

Though a mate of mine who works in Gamestation has told me about a loophole in the Sony/Microsoft warranty system. If you go to Gamestation, you can pay them 38 for a warranty for a 360/PS3, then they give you a new system and send the paperwork to whoever needs it. You walk away with a brand new system, they are happy because they get the 38 and Sony/Microsoft just write it off as a repair. (because you have to send your old system to them by the way)

^

I've probably missed/mixed up some of the details with that, but it's something along those lines.

Is that why they did away with the whole backwards compatibility issue? It heated up a little faster than the system could handle? Hm. It would ..kind of make sense.

No, they scrapped the bc to cut the cost of building a PS3. Sony is trying to make a profit.

Can i just ask a quick question about emulators, you guys would probably know more on it than i do.
I heard that if you use daemon tools and using the ISO from a PS2 or PS1 game you can play it with certain emulators?

Also, can anyone link me an PS1 and PS2 emulator that actually works, iv tried a few. i just wanna play ff7 again (PS3 and my PS2 broke, it cant play ps1 games or DVDs anymore *gutted*)
