Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Original Video Game Soundtrack
By: James Hannigan

Release: March 17th
Format: iTunes Mp3, 256kb/s
Length: 57.6 minutes
Size: 121.4MB unpacked

Hi guys,

This was just recently released and, given the outstanding and extremely effective score for the previous game in the series, I couldn't help but grab it. Now I'm giving back a bit to the community by sharing Hannigan's wonderful work with you!

This is Hannigan's second score for the game series, and I'm now very curious to see how the corresponding film's score turns out since (in my humble opinion) Hannigan's score for the previous installment of the series absolutely obliterated Nicholas Hooper's lack-lustre effort for the film. Hannigan demonstrates an understanding of the Harry Potter universe and ability to translate it into music that Hooper's score just didn't have for me. Where Hooper's score could be transplanted into a different film fairly easily, Hannigan's couldn't.

Anyway, I digress. This score is on par with the first of Hannigan's contributions, maybe even sneaks a bit above every now and again. Definitely a solid effort and undoubtedly a must-listen for anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of expertly-crafted, tasteful, and evocative orchestral music.

EDIT 2: Mp3 link, thanks to Ileferru: http://anonym.to/?http://www.rapidspread.com/file.jsp?id=xfd93gx4ot

Enjoy! :)

Hahaha, my mistake, Bio. I'll see if I can fix the title. :P

Let me know when you manage to find the film score, I'm very curious to hear that one too...especially to see if it's improved!

I'll change the title for you. Let me know what you want it changed to, the name would be too long to fit Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Original Video Game Soundtrack as the title, so maybe OVGS or Game Soundtrack would work? It's up to you.

I'm impartial — whatever's clearest. I think replacing the ("Hannigan, iTunes)" bit with "(VG Soundtrack)" or something to that effect might work nicely.

As I say though, whatever makes the most sense, doesn't matter to me. :)

Thanks a lot ! Last Hannigan's Potter was indeed a true gem, and the best score since John Williams has left the serie. And Hannigan being able to use Hedwige's Theme was a real improvement on his predecessor. So bad it had to be cut on the Itune release. I suppose it's the same here. We'll have to wait for the release of the game and a complete rip to hear what Hannigan fully wants to deliver on The Half-Blood Prince !

Question, why was it released in March when the game (and movie) release in July? Doesn't seem plausible to me. I'm not complaining, just saying. Wish more OSTs did this.

I was wondering this myself. How may copies is it going to sell now?

The only people buying it will be score geeks like us.

If I were a marketing department I'd release about a week after the game came out. A short enough time to beat the game rips, and a long enough time for people to play the game, love the music, and wonder if it's for sale anywhere.

Still, I'm not complaining either - it's great to have it so much sooner than we expected. It just seems like a curious business decision. :)

The extended use of Hannigan's music in the last trailer for the game is just wonderful. And so is the new arrangements of William's original theme, pitifully lacking in the official release of the game soundtrack. I'm waiting for the complete game rip with high praise !

It's absolutely idiotic if you ask me... You don't put write a new "Superman" comic but fail to include Superman because of rights issues...

Hannigan writes a score for a series, incorporating themes written by somebody else. And then he has to crop out all ocurrences of that theme - or even allusions of it. This has to mean half the score, at least.

Obviously the re-use fee for Williams' themes is high... I understand the reason behind the decision, but it's still silly.

Any news of a Playstation gamerip of Hannigan's music ? I'm sure it could be more complete (and so, including more Hedwige's Theme) than the PC one. I saw the movie last afternoon. Quite a mess about the music...

I 100% DISAGREE. hooper did an OUTSTANDING JOB on this one, i didnt think he could do it, but he really impressed me. I liked his OOTP score, but...WOW...

This has to mean half the score, at least.John Williams' themes in the game add up to not more than 3 or 4 minutes, Hannigan didn't use them too much... even less than he did in "Order of the Phoenix".

It's just that EA licensed the themes for the game(s), and not any use beyond that, which makes sense marketing-wise. Releasing the soundtracks is more of a good-will and nothing that generates mentionable profits (okay, mentioning this on a forum like this is pointless).

By the way, I just LOVE Hannigan's HP-scores, and I like them a lot better than what Soule did for the previous games, and even better than Hooper's work for the films.

Any chance of updated links?
My copies are all really gross, ear-bleeding 128kbps, which does a real injustice to an otherwise awesome soundtrack.
