Taku Iwasaki (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=132) 'Music' Collection

>Under Construction<

I was bored and when I bored, I make huge discography threads...
Taku Iwasaki (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=132) is my second favorite anime soundtrack composer, and he never disappoints. His most recent works are: Gurren-Lagann, Soul Eater, Persona, and Kekkaishi. His Getbackers (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1840) OSTs are the oldest anime songs I have on my computer (before I was an anime ost fan). Hope You enjoy this collection even though I posted most of this already in separate threads.

That's the stuff!

This guy is really exceptional, he can brilliantly compose in almost any style, and often mix several genres to produce a unique sound.

Thanks a bunch for this great collection, jedinewtype.

Wot?! [Tongue in cheek alert - before you get offended or somebody starts flaming me!] ;)

If Yoko Kanno was John Williams of anime then Taku Iwasaki would be James Horner or Hans Zimmer. Hope You enjoy this collection even though I posted most of this already in separate threads.

I thought you *liked* the guy! Why are you comparing him to a thief and a hack respectively? And why are you comparing Yoko Kanno to John Williams? Madman!

Iwasaki is a genius. He can bounce around genres better than anybody, and still he makes every note sound as if it is coming from the heart. From the heavyweight, ultra-cool electronica/orchestral hybrid, James Bondesque music in Read Or Die, through to the enchanting melodies and warmth of Bincho-tan, he really can do anything. And yet his style is completely unmistakable.

A fine fine composer, and I thank you for starting this thread. :)

Iwasaki is fantastic. If you can get ahold of it, I definitely recommend getting the soundtrack to the PSX Cho Aniki--he composed some really excellent tracks for it. I found it once on Slightlydark, but it's long since been rotated out, and I don't have a backup :/

You forgot the FULL Gurren Lagann OST that was released some time ago. ;) It's a two-disc set that contains all of the tracks in Best Sound (save the extended Dai-Gurren theme, which, while the theme itself appears, the intro is gone) plus virtually every other track composed for the series.

Hmmm. I'm a lot less enthusiastic for this one. The guy's overrated, and Gurren Laggan' R.O.D. and Robin all left me pretty cold. He's got Kajiura syndrome if you ask me: he's competent in some genres and just boring in others.

But then, when you listen to Kanno all the time, everything else sounds like lame and meh. :p

I'll give some of it a chance when I have time. Call me when you start a Kouhei Tonaka thread and we'll really talk. lol

Taku's style is blend of electronic and orchestral unless someone knows of a soundtrack avoid of electronica; maybe his old stuff?

Even his oldest works contain electronic elements. Witch Hunter Robin is filled with synths and electric guitars, Now and Then, Here and There is heavily electronic as well. Simply, that's his style, he combines orchestral and electronic elements together, unless he's composing some jazz pieces, which are actually devoid of electronica.

Kekkaishi is probably his most traditional work, electronics, while not gone, are definitely less important on the OST. Oban Star-Racers is also fairly traditional, although like Kekkaishi the electronica elements are still there. His score for Origins: Spirit Of The Past is the most traditional of all (then again, I haven't seen the movie in a while so this is somewhat of a guess), but I don't think the score for that movie has ever been released.

I do have the Kekkaishi, Now and Then, Here and There, and Soul Eater scores if you guys want them. No scans, though, they're all off imported CDs (and I haven't had my SE score translated yet).

Edit: And personally, I don't think Hans Zimmer is a hack. I think he's immensely talented and his Remote Control Productions group and the composers that work/worked out of it provide some of the most interesting TV, movie, and game scores out there.

Wow, that's some comment!

I totally disagree on the Zimmer part, but besides, very interesting.

Listen to the Rain Man or Black Hawk Down OSTs sometime and you'll change your mind on Zimmer. ;)

I'm a big Iwasaki fanboy, big enough that I buy his OSTs to give him money rather than yank 'em off the Internet. Bandai officially sells the Witch Hunter Robin's OSTs too if you want to give Iwasaki and Bandai some cash.

Another thing on Iwasaki, his works get progressively quirker after Kekkaishi. Soul Eater is one of the oddest OSTs I've ever heard, but it's extremely diverse. One track that seems to be called "HarmoNIZE" has a drumbeat that's Nine Inch Nails-esque filled with straight-ahead rock guitars and then strings at the end, with a screaming English vocal (in fact, all of the songs with lyrics on the SE OST are in English, elementary-school English, granted, but it's perfect elementary school English). One that's called "Krieg" is rock-based with guitar solos galore, and another that's called "Blitz" has strings and jazz horns backing up an acoustic guitar and handclaps that's borderline applause over a techno drum beat. It's a very, very interesting score.

Thanks for sharing, jedinewtype and others. I haven't actively sought out Iwasaki's OSTs in the past, so many of these albums are entirely new to me.

Now for my thoughts on Iwasaki (which, as it turns out, are the only thoughts that matter). He's done amazing work with emotionally moving classical/orchestral music and fast-paced electronic action music. His major failing is that many of his symphonic songs are pretty much the same as his other symphonic songs. Take a few songs from Kekkaishi, Rurouni Kenshin, and R.O.D. together and try to tell the difference. It reminds me of driving on a long stretch of highway in a cornfield; you're leaving miles of nothing behind while heading towards miles of nothing.

But he's definitely getting better as long as he doesn't stick to just one genre of music, unless the anime absolutely demands it.

Has anyone found out what new anime he's doing? I haven't seen him as the composer for any series since Soul Eater ended which is quite disappointing. I know he's involved in something called Katanagatari that's beginning in mid-2010 but is he involved in anything right now?

He's probably my favorite composer working right now on either side of the Pacific so I'd like to know. On the other hand, him not being involved relieves some strain on the old wallet.

Someone mentioned PS (and Saturn) Cho Aniki, and I thought I would add that he did Ai Cho Aniki on PC Engine CD which is an absolutely brilliant soundtrack. Actually, I had no clue that his roots were in anime, I'll definitely have to listen to some of this music, and go buy the CDs if I enjoy it as much as I did with his game stuff.

Plenty. Akira Senju, Michiru Oshima, Yoko Kanno (sometimes), Yuki Kajiura, Hikaru Nanase, Kenji Kawai, Ko Otani, Kuniaki Haishima (for Monster), and there are plenty more.

I have bought Oban Star Racers OST V1, and I must say, dwnld'ing it from here is pointless. The tracks are too quiet, so they have to be amplified with Audacity. After volume is raised, the only wise choice is to export in a lossless format. Cause, if you choose MP3, the tracks will get compressed A SECOND TIME. And who needs twice compressed music?

Then I'm gratefully looking for your lossless format^_^
Could you please upload it? Any lossless format is ok.

Anyone listened to the Taku Iwasaki - Katanagatari OST?? It is actually amazing. the last song gives me shivers down my spine, probably because i watched the anime too, which is also great.
