Details on FFXI battle system (GameSpot VG VGSP)

Ziff-Davis Wire

The latest Famitsu magazine in Japan has revealed some interesting pieces of information regarding the battle system in SquareSoft's upcoming Final Fantasy XI. The online multiplayer game is a complete departure from previous games in the series in terms of its look and style, and the combat system is no different. SquareSoft will do away with the random battles in the previous Final Fantasy games, as monsters and enemies will be visible on the map. The battles will occur in real time, but there will also be a menu system. Players will be able to engage an enemy of their choosing and will be able to switch between simple attacks, magic, and items using a pop-up battle menu.

Currently being beta-tested in Japan, Final Fantasy XI will be released in that territory in spring 2002. A North American release should follow later in the year.

Kinda sucks that we always get it a year later even though the dumb company is in American soil. Such BS. Yes I know it is because one, I live in Hawaii and two, I pass by Square Soft Company every day to work.

Oh and I dont think the game is being tested not in japan but in Hawaii. You would think it is since the company is on this island.

Actually, testing for FFXI began last December in Japan.

He said the game would be released in Spring 2002, not the Beta. And a year later we get it.

Even though there may be a Square building in the states, that don't mean they do programming there. The main programming for theres I would imagine goes on in Japan.

I don't see why they don't just have the voices in English. To my understanding isn't English a 2nd language tought over in Japan? IT would save square massive amounts of money if they just made them in Japan and then they could release them all at the same time?

heh, it'd be cool if they did the voices in English, but as you put it, it is a second language, not their first. Besides, it's a matter of cultural pride to have a company from your country make products in your own language.

Also, if you ask a lot of people outside the country, they complain about the "Americanization of the Internet"...

Well, from what have seen, there is a certain amount of English in the Japanese version of FFXI. The names of allies and of enemies are in English.

But..could you see an American company releasing a one of the most anticipated games in Spanish only, just because the game will be a good seller in Mexico?

It won't be long before we get it in North America. Stores around here are taking pre-orders already, four to six more months I think TOPS.

looks like I'm gonna go have to preorder Myone <.< >.> Working at Jacks Pet and Aquarium is paying off, w00t. Any ways, yeah, makes sence that Japan would get it before us since Squaresoft is a Japanesse Company or what ever *blabs on*

I wonder why they are releasing it on PS2 first? I thought that they were using a multi-platform approach? If so, then when and what other platforms are they gonna use?

It will be on PC definitely. Sony just always gets the Square products first.

And they cant have English voices if you type what you want to say. Makes no sense.

I really liked Final Fantasy VIII and X but XI is obviously going to be different because it's online!!! I think it is going to be really fin though. If you love rpg's and are one of those people who has been wishing you could play final fantasy with your friends this is the chance. Making alliances is going to be really fun and I've heard that it would be almost impossible to get anywhere in the game on your own. Each person will be able to customize six characters and an alliance will be made up of three players making an alliance with a total of EIGHTEEN PEOPLE!!!!!! That sounds pretty cool to me. The classes and jobs are rather exciting but I want there to be more of an objective than in oethr online games where you complete quests. I want there to be a way where you can kind of say "Hey, I beat it!!!!!" This would be rather difficult to do but it could happen, right? Squaresoft has been an amazing company and has brought many great things to the final fantasy series. With what I've seen in this game so far, I'm really excited!! The only thing I can think of that disappoints me is that you need to have DSL or another type of high speed internet connection will cost a minimum of $50 a month. You also need to purchase the Broadband Ethernmet adaptor for the PS2 which will cost around $150 but I read that FFXI may come with it so that's a semi-good deal. If they make you get the high speed connection and the Ethernet Adapter they best not charge a montthly fee to play ffXI that's not fair at all but we may get suckered in to paying. Let me know what you think about all of this.

I see that electronics boutique will ship there pre-orders out on November 2, 2002. I did pre-order FFX, so I will pre-order FFXI too.
