Hi everyone!

I know we've all been waiting for this for a while now, especially in lieu of the pain in the ass that the game has turned out to be for ripping, and so I'm happy to be the one to finally bring you the original soundtrack, freshly released.

It's fully tagged, obviously, and comes in a nice 320kbps bitrate so there should be no worries about quality.

I know the composer and I truly admire the work that's been done here, so DO please consider purchasing it. Don't actually, but you know...consider. It's the thought that counts. Or something. :P Nevermind.

Anyway, it's really atmospheric, intense for a large portion of it, heavily dissonant, but very well constructed. Those with some appreciation for modern music or those who liked the BioShock soundtrack will find lots to love here. LOTS. Just as a general FYI, this score was composed and produced entirely using real instruments and live recording techniques...there's no heavy post-processing and/or layered synth elements here, despite the fact that it occasionally sounds like it. Just mentioning so you get an idea of just how cool a symphony orchestra can be in terms of making weird noises.

Here it is:

Please, anyone with more time on their hands, put it up in more places and give me the links to the mirrors so I can add them to this post.

Please enjoy! :)

Almost purchased this on iTunes but I'm glad I saw it on Amazon.com later. Higher bitrate and no protection. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say thanks for sharing it here! =)

As I recall, it was supposed to ship alongside the game, then got pushed back to the 11th (yesterday, EST), then got pushed back again to the 25th. All, I reiterate, withouth a word of explanation.

Wow, that's the stuff! And thank you also for your comments, Mathazzar. So many times you just have a score posted and no explanation, so you take some time downloading to often discover it's not at all your style of music.

Thanks to your presentation we know exactly what we download. Kudos!

Mein Gott! A beautiful, dark, old fashioned horror score that doesn't resort to stupid synthesisers or electronica percussion to get its point across - just a big orchestra getting the crap knocked out of it!

On top of that, this is clearly influenced by Jerry Goldsmith's seminal 1979 score for Alien - check out the very first track - it's almost bordering on the romantic.

Thank you!

Reminds me of that mostly, along with James Horners Aliens score (and little bit of Predator), spiced up with a little more percussion and what almost sounds like a little bit of penderecki thrown into the mix.

OMG! Main theme is just... AWESOME! Beautiful. But one thing about whole score - it's not an easy listen. Dark and creepy music it is. But really interesting. And there is one thing that i'm sure of - i will never listen to this at night;). Thanks for sharing!

You're all quite welcome. :)

I know what you mean about the presentation...that's one thing that annoys me with a lot of the things that surface around here. You get a link and maybe some technical information about the music, but if you don't already know what it's like then in most cases you're just SOL and you end up waiting however long for something to download only to discover that no, in fact you weren't looking forward to a soundtrack full of jpop polka remixes.

But back to Dead Space, the comparisons to the Alien score are inevitable and very accurate. I have also heard (as someone mentioned) that Graves (and Rod Abernethy, his overseer) worked with or studied under Goldsmith, so I'm sure some of the techniques used here were picked up at that point.

That said, I agree that it's not an easy listen by any stretch of the imagination, but it's hard not to appreciate it for its creative orchestration, intensity, and of course perfectly compelling in-game presence.

As a general note, if people like this kind of orchestra-only horror score with romantic elements, do yourselves a favour and check out Nathan Barr's scores to Hostel and its sequel...beautiful orchestral horror, it's excellent stuff.

I agree!! Hostel has a fantastic score. I only hope that Nathan Barr will release his score to True Blood because its so far fantastic.

Thanks.

For me, this soundtrack works far better in the game than hearing the music without playing the game. Really fits in to the game and is huge part of the atmosphere in the game.

However, there is nothing in these tracks to remember after hearing them like this way. Nothing to hang on, no hook nothing to get back at.

That would explain a lot - if it's true, he's a truly lucky man, to have studied with Goldsmith... Graves is consistently underestimated as a composer, I think - and yet he is obviously highly skilled.

My feelings about Alien don't really concern the whole score - as a whole, it has more in common with avant-garde classical music and Horner than it does with Goldsmith. The instrumentation definitely isn't as inventive as Goldsmith's. But the main theme is, without a doubt, a very Goldsmithian piece - mixing Alien and Freud in even quantities. Above all, it's a THEME, which isn't the usual done thing in the world of horror - particularly this kind of uncompromising hell! :)

That said, I agree that it's not an easy listen by any stretch of the imagination, but it's hard not to appreciate it for its creative orchestration, intensity, and of course perfectly compelling in-game presence.

Who needs easy listening? That's what Burt Bacharach is for. ;)

This definitely isn't the kind of thing you'd put on for a romantic dinner with your girlfriend - nor is it the kind of thing you'd listen to late at night with the lights off... But I think the uphill struggle is really paid off. It's very, very rewarding score once you get through it.

As a general note, if people like this kind of orchestra-only horror score with romantic elements, do yourselves a favour and check out Nathan Barr's scores to Hostel and its sequel...beautiful orchestral horror, it's excellent stuff.

Thirded. How Barr managed to get away with writing such brazenly romantic scores to such horrific films is beyond my comprehension - they're both very beautiful pieces.

Thank you again for your post. :)

Quite so. The score was supposed to be a cacophony at times, according to Graves. Rather nice action tracks, thx for the link!

It's got great music, thanks for this a lot. ^_^

Though I must say, despite great music, great graphics, and plenty of fun... the game was saddeningly easy.

The achievement/trophy for playing with just the Plasma Cutter I figured would be difficult, but that's actually the easiest way to play.
