Well, after quite a bit of training in the Lhusu Mines, Vaan and Penelo are lv. 27 and everyone else is lv. 20 and everyone has Quickenings. So, I finally bought all magic, armor, weapons, technicks, etc. and decided to move on with the story. So, I make it to the tomb place and engage the Garuda in battle. The battle couldn't have lasted but 2 minutes at the most. I rushed in and was lucky enough to dish out 10 Quickenings in a row and ending with a Cataclysm concurrence which instantly killed the "boss" battle. I figured the whole game would be easy if that happened every time, so am I right?

You just got very lucky. I rarely get above 8 Quickenings in a row. I suck. D:

All the mandatory bosses in this game are pretty much a joke, except for Elder Wyrm maybe and the Undying.

Unleashing quickenings first in a boss battle is definitely a good tactic, especially if you're good enough to end after getting mist charges for your characters. If I were you, I'd read some quickening guides, like on gamefaqs for example, because I actually learned a lot from them, and eventually was able to achieve the Black Hole concurrence, if but once.

I rarely use quickenings unless I am severely under-leveled. I think that they make all mandatory boss fights ridiculously easy, especially if you are adequately leveled. The only thing that they are good for, in my opinion, is for the extra MP you get. If you are going to use them though, I would suggest you wait until you know that you can kill the guy with the quickening chain. If you don't, you will be crippled by having no MP for recovery/offensive magic for a while.

I rarely ever used Quickenings, save for to level up Vaan in the very early stages of the game. I grew tired of watching the animations over and over again (which made getting the Black Hole concurrence - also, only once - a very grueling ordeal).

I only use quickenings in the beginnning of the game at the beginning of the boss fight until i get moves like berserk, haste etc. when i berserk and haste all and save the quickenings for the end when the boss has like 1/10 health left.

The only time I ever use quickenings is right at the end of a (tough) boss battle, just before they enter HP Critical and have increased defence, palings, etc.

I'm pretty much like Slavka. Quickenings are great for dealing damage to bosses in in defense mode or powerful marks, but otherwise not so much.

The only time I've used a Quickening out of necessity was on that one boss that drained your MP. Since I wasn't going to be able to heal soon, might as well unleash something useful with it.

See, I only used the Quickenings against the Garuda because I wanted to do some testing. I was confident enough that I could defeat it if our Quickenings failed, but fortunately I didn't have to. I wanted to practice getting the timing right with the Mist charges, too, and I couldn't have picked a better time. =3

I was probably the same level as you when I got to that point. I advise you to train more. I'm starting again and hopefully I will be a bit higher than expected at that point.

The game gets much harder at this point now that you are making your way to Archandia and when I found out that I was just halfway through the game, I cussed myself.

Quickenings are useful...

A.) When you know how to manipulate them. What I like to do is start with a party with three full Quickenings. Then I'll launch a single Level 1 with a single character and use the Charge to only charge Quickenings for that character and try to make a chain, leaving the other characters untouched. Then, once that character is done, I'll start up another character and use that character and the character I used before. Then when that's done, what I'll do is launch a Level 1 on the final character and only use the other two characters. Then, once that's over, I'll do another Level 1, until finally there's only a single Level 1 left from the menu and then go hog-wild with everybody. And if that's not enough, then I start switching in other characters. And then if that still isn't enough, I use Ether or Elixir (or give up for the time being and train my characters.)

B.) The biggest advantage of Quickenings is that they remove your characters from the normal battle flow and allow you to start ruling the battle by your rules. A Mark is using vicious attacks that keep KOing your characters? Use Quickenings! Some monster, Mark or Boss is hitting you with terrible status effects? They can't hit with them if they don't have a chance to act! Quickenings are incredibly useful at lower levels to take on some of the toughest Mark fights, including the Trickster, the "Belito" and even certain bosses.

C.) I always try to prioritize Quickenings as early as possible. Not neglecting other Licenses too much, but getting Quickenings quickly is an easy way to power through the game.

D.) A Concurrence is especially useful when fighting multiple targets, but only if you chain correctly to obtain one. I generally try to get at least three Level 1 within a chain if at all possible because that's the easiest Concurrence (Inferno) to obtain. Quickenings only target a single target-- the only way you're going to hit multiple targets with a Quickening is to obtain a Concurrence.

To learn more about Quickenings, see the this thread here (Thread 34683).

I think my best chain is something like 30 or more. Those of you that have only gotten something like 8 should look at the tips I just posted and also in that thread I linked in order to make the most of Quickenings.

i can't do quickenings i'm too slow. i can barely do 8 most times I can maybe do 4 but killing the enemies for me is more to do with my weapon.

My best chain is 25 (fluke I normally rarely get over 10) and have never got black hole. I only use quickening's with my tanks in the beginning (although I still buy them for my mages for extra mp). Later on in the game when everyones kinda a mage then I use quickening's for only the ones i'm not using as a mage for that battle (not during a big boss battle though because I need that for healing and buffing), or before I use berserk on someone, or before they put up a paling.

....Oh yeah, Quickenings are good for more than extra MP. I had forgotten they existed....

<_< Seriously, I'm always too busy managing healing and buffing during boss fights to think about Quickenings. Probably helps that I'm overleveled... (I got lost and wandered around some area far longer than I should have, though I've been holding off on the fighting to let the enemies catch up, and it's starting to show.)

That's really impressive. My best chain is 29. And I only did that once. I'm pretty sure it was against a Mark, but I don't really remember which one. I usually get over 20 though.

I also agree with you. Quickenings are indeed very useful, through the entire game. Their only problem is that they drain all your MP, and that can be dangerous against bosses, especially if you've learned to rely on it a lot.

I use quikenings in the start of the game as well to train vaan on the dinosaur outside of rabanastre, i also used it against the esper on top of the mountain at the mosphoran highwaste (it was hard)
And than i used them to get the mistbreaker achievement in the sky pirats den...

Sounds cool.

I restarted this game recently and forgot how much having quickenings increased your MP. For that reason alone they're cool. Other than that, I usually whip them out when I'm being crushed by a boss and don't want to lose. It does tend to make some fights too easy when you're lucky enough.

My problem with Quickenings is that they look like demo screens that you'd see at E3 a couple of years before the game came out.

You know, just some shots of the characters is a neutral, black space, doing pretty looking explodey attacks.

They lack the personal touch, and hardly any of them actually feel all that appropriate to the characters that use them.

Also, given that the game strives to be as realistic as it can (given that it's still a fantasy game with magic etc), having the characters suddenly pull baddies into some black area and throwing them into suns or hitting them with massive fiery swords from outer space, just feels completely out of place.

I don't really use Quickenings at all, mainly for this reason. They just didn't feel right and I didn't like using them. And I never suffered through not using them, as there are more than enougb ways to deal death to your enemies quickly without them.

So they don't really figure into my playing of FF12 at all... They are quite handy for getting rid of the little helpers that sometimes accompany bosses though, I suppose.

I've never been a big user of Summons either (in any FF). It was fun using Neo Bahamut on basic Shinra troopers in FF7, though!

Quickenings are fun but not useful outside the main storyline. Try that on the 2 hardest bosses in the game and the upper echelon esper fights and you end up getting killed very quickly. Other than that, they are fun to use though the loss of mp does have drawbacks, you can't really lose if your leveled high enough.

I used quickenings on the bomb king in salika wood, i dont know why but he used renew over and over everytime i got him down to the last 1/4 of his hp he used renew and called some more of his little bombs to help him, so i used quickenings just before he was about to renew himself and finished him off.

I cant remember him using this on my last play through over two years ago, i am playing IZJS now though so maybe its different XD

Got the Black Hole concurrence 3 times once I got the hang of spamming Quickenings.

Just gotta be quick on the buttons, espeically when Mist Charges come up.

The trouble is that the damage is highly random, so even if you get the high concurrences, you only occasionally do the kind of damage you think all that effort deserves.

And sometimes, the damage you do is downright insulting!

Plus we have to be realistic about this. If all it took to kill the super bosses, was to hit them with a Quickening chain or three, then they wouldn't be much cop, would they?

The first time I used Quickenings, I totally failed and thought "what was the point of that?" and never used them again until a few playthroughs later when I had to kill the Bomb king to get the Zodiac Spear before Phon Coast. I don't remember using them since. I hate using really cheap things like those because it makes the game less fun, and it's hard for me to know when it's worth it (it usually never is to me). I felt the same way with Aeons in FFX. I feel a lot more accomplished if I beat the boss without them, too, which I like :D
