WHAT?!?! What kind of name is Tee-dus! I went through the whole game believeing his name is Ty-dus. *signs* This is the only problem with Final Fantasy. We never hear the real pronounceation of the names.*sighs*

Um.....I know that this is should be in the FF9 forum, but since were on the topic and I don't think I should start another thread, is Zidane's name pronouced Zi-dan(like the male name Dan) or Zi-dane(like the dog breed "Great Dane")???

I always thought that the "e" was silent.

Well, I never thought of the pronounciation until I heard it on the special trailer that was included on the DVD of Final Fantasy : The spirits within...

I don't think Tee-dus is a bad name...then again, I may be used to this type of pronounciation since I speak French but...oh well...

Tidus didn't look like a gay to me...He was just ...cheeful and cry-baby. that's all.

I thought that it was supposed to be pronounced Tie-dus as well, but then I heard how they talked about it on GameSpot and it is Tee-dus.

Also, I always pronounced Zidane with a short 'e', but then my friend said it was Zie-dane with a long 'i'. Couldn't tell you Raven.....

Miya,

They never say his name in the game, since you have the option to rename him. Yuna refers to him as the "New Guardian" I believe.

Tee-dus? is that the spanish pronunciation? Tidus -should- be pronounced the way its spelled, Tie-dus. And as for Zidane, i always pronounced it Zih-Dane

Well, as for Zidane, I've always pronounced the way it's written, mainly because of the star soccer player Zinedine Zidane...then again, the fact I speak French may have helped a bit for that.

I say Ty-dus (long I sound) as well. :uh?: There's one way to find out for sure. I read somewhere "Tidus" means "sun" in a dialect of Japanese. We need to find a pronounciation guide for said dialect. I'll research it when I get some free time because I'm a dork who likes things like that.

Yeah, when he autographed the blitzball in the beginning of the game I thought "how are they gonna work this with the voice acting?!" I'm almost done the game and they have yet to make the mistake of saying his name out loud. I think they did a good job of it, too. There's only one scene where it really sounds awkward, where he's listening to the recording Yuna made and she's like "To Wakka... to Kimarhi... to Star Player of the Zanarkand Abes..."

Well, 'Ty-dus' is the only one that makes sense...it's a water-based came right, and the name Tidus is derived from Tide, which is pronounced Tyde. So yea.

But on the International version, they interview the guy who voiced Tidus, and he pronounces it 'Tee-dus'...o_O

IT's Ty-dus......get it? Like after a Tide which is associated with water and the whole game has a lot of water in it. Like how ff 7, 8 and 9's characters are all named after wheater things.......Trust me, it's Tidus and teedus sounds really.....odd.

Tidus- Ty-duss

Chocobo- Cho-coo (long on the "o")-bow(as in bow and arrow)
Irvine- Eye-er-veen (possibly the weirdest pronounciation of any...o.O;; )

If Square really does end up making a FFX sequel, won't we hear Tidus's name in it?

EDIT: Found something!!! O_O On the official FFX site, there's a behind the scenes section where they interview the game's creators. One interview is of Tidus's voice actor and it's a QuickTime movie. Unfortunately, the piece of crap I'm using to access the internet has no sound card. >_< Anyone else want to listen? I'll listen once I get my computer up and running.

Da, Fujin, that's how I found out Tidus' name was pronounced Tee-dus and not Ty-dus. ^-^ I heard the interview and the dude pronounced it Tee-dus, so.. o_O

Btw; Konema, please keep this FFX only, and no other ff's ^^

Well, not only have I heard on Square's official FFX site with the voice actor's interview , but I also heard on the Final Fantasy : The Spirit Whithin DVD...There's a sneak peek of FFX on it , and it says " A young adventurer named "Tee-dus" (...) embark on a epic journey"

Since the trailer is officially made by Square itself, how can you still doubt how it's pronounced ? :p

This has already been brought up before in this thread: Tidus's name is NEVER said out loud in the game. He is always called "son of Jecht" or "Star of the Zanarkand Abes" or "Hey you" or whatever. "Tidus" is never said. For the most part whoever wrote the script did a good job with it, but there are a few scenes where it really, badly, stands out. Seymour has an entire conversation with him in which he continually says "Son of Jecht" this and "Son of Jecht" that. There's a scene where Yuna addresses her guardians, "Wakka... Lulu.... and the Star of the Zanarkand Abes." Jecht calls him "kid." Even Auron calls him "new guy," even though Auron is the one character who has actually known for a long time.

I've been saying Tye-dus, but I think now I'm trying to say "Tee-dus," since that's how it's supposed to be. (Besides, I'm trying to learn Japanese and "Teedus" is how it should be pronounced in Japanese.)

chronoserge
07-30-2002, 11:20 PM
I refuse to call him teedus, and that's that. It sounds incredibly stupid and weird, and it dosn't make sense either. CAuse it should be Tidus, after the weather effect and cause the game has lots of water and cloud and squall and zidane are all named after weather stuff's, so it's Tidus. it's pronounced the way it's spelled, if it was teedus, it would be spelled tiedus, but it's not, it's Tidus.

Ohhh......Whatever........

ACTUALLY EVERYONE!!!!
I remeber where I heard his names said!!!! I got DVD with my game that interviews the person who did Tidus voice....and all way through the interview he is saying Tee-dus....but when they interview the person who did Yuna's voice...she says Ty-dus..........oh this is just too confusin for me

Someone said that it should be "Tye-dus" because all the main characters in recent FF games have had weather elements for (Cloud, Squall... err, what's a Zidane?) so Tidus should be a reference to tides. But I read that "Tidus" (pronounced "Teedus") is "Sun" in the Okinawan dialect of Japanese. (Not sure what sun is in regular Japanese. I'll have to look it up.)

chronoserge
08-04-2002, 09:38 PM
But sun is not a weather affect my friend..........:P but a tide is, and since the whole game has a very water feel too it............I just think the real pronunciation is Tyedus. I just pronounce it the way it's spelled.

Fujin
08-04-2002, 11:48 PM
"Terra" isn't a weather element either, but it refers to the environment, like clouds or squalls or the sun.

What's a Zidane?

I guess Tee-dus is what Square wanted us to call him. I still perfer saying Tie-dus, even though it is spelled "Titus" if you say it that way.

Hmm.... I just think that it's amazing how they went through the whole game without even saying the Hero's name once. I was kinda shock to see a Name Entry for Tidus. o_O

I was just thinking, won't we hear Tidus say his name in Kingdom Hearts?

And what I said previously about "Teedus" being the correct Japanese pronounciation, I take it back. If "u" in Japanese is pronounced like the "oo" in "moon," that makes "Tidus" "teedoos." :uh?: Well, I'm still saying "Teedus" until his name is actually said in a game.

Wait, having not played the game yet, i dun know. But doesn't it ever once say his name in the game?? Doesn't it have voices?

Mystery_Man
09-06-2002, 02:44 PM
No that's been brought up twice that his name is never said in the game because you can change it. Teedus is the way the voice actor pronounced it so that's probably our best source. Unless someone is fluent in Japanese and can clarify.

If they do make a sequal to FFX I'd say that you'll play as Tidus again, you'll just rescue him shortly after the game starts and be able to change his name again. Least that's my theory and I'm sticking to it =).

I've always said it ty-dus, but of course, I could be wrong, as I've obviously never heard it pronunced by anyone but myself and my fellow gamers. It always amuses me to see people all up in arms, vehmently defending their pronunciation when there's really no surefire way to know you're right. Personally, I jusy go with ty-dus
because I think I would lose whatever respect I had for a man named tee-dus. *Shudders* If I was named tee-dus, and found myself in a world where no one knew who I was, I think I'd lie about my name.

EDIT: As to the interviews, you'll notice that the voice actors are even varied on how they pronounce Tidus's name. I think they're as clueless as we are.

Here's the way it goes: During an interview about FFX, the representative called him Tee-Dus, but during an interview about FFX-2, the rep called him Ty-Dus. So, in FFX, his name is Tee-Dus, in FFX-2 his name is Ty-Dus.
In KH it's pronounced Tee-Dus, just thought I'd throw that out. But most people, including me, pronounce it Ty-Dus because it sounds cooler and it's amore common pronounciation of the name.
