Ok I'm looking for a really good futuristic movie. Something with exceptional effects and a solid story, even wierd off base films that maybe only a few peeps have heard of.

I dont want the Matrix, no Aeon Flux, no I am legend, nothing with "Star" in the title, and no anime.

FUTURISTIC MOVIE ON THE LINES OF GHOST IN THE SHELL PERHAPS? <--- a few caps here. Hm.

Anyway, let me know please.

Hmm, what about "Event Horizon"?
Story starts when prototype spaceship called Event Horizon, which was lost 7 years ago when trying to reach some far star, shows signal again. Dr. Weir, one of the men who had built that spaceship, was sent on a rescue mission with captain Miller and his team. Their objective is to find out where Event Horizon was all these years.
This movie is from 1997. They say it's sci-fi thriller. Cast is pretty decent, Laurence Fishburne as captain Miller and Sam Neill as Dr. Weir.
I quite liked that movie. First 2/3 are good, than it becomes a bit stupid. But I still think it's a worth seeing movie.

A.I. is pretty good too.

Equilibrium is a pretty solid flick.

And the best movie ever: The 5th Element

Why oh why am I the first one to suggest it? Johnny Mnemonic got suggested before fuckin Blade Runner? Jeezy Creezy

I'm going to punch you through the internet Neg

I also suggest:

Dark City
Children of Men (it feels close to modern day but is still the shit)
Alien
Aliens
Serenity
Minority Report
Escape from New York (if you don't mind a film with a sort of oldschool feel)
Metropolis (if you don't mind old movies. I don't mean the anime but that's cool too)

And I doubt you'll like THX-1138, George Lucas' first movie, a lot of people don't, but I think it's pretty neat

If you want duuuuumb but fun go for Stallone's 90s romps, Demolition Man and Judge Dredd. Heavy on the dumb, really, but equally heavy on the fun.

I agree with Libra. Both of these films are pretty good. I'd say Equilibrium is better for action and The 5th Element is better for some fun.

I like Equilibrium except for the fight scenes, they look way too rehearsed, not natural enough. Even the director didn't like it, the choreographer made it stiffer than he wanted.

Blade Runner. A must see.

One of the best movies of all time

God I love that movie.

Do yourself a favor, get the Collector's Edition (it's the big one in plastic case) with the, what?
3+ versions of the film, more commentary than you can shake a stick at and
MOAR.

It's one of the only box sets that I actually OWN and have watch EVERY dvd

The second Riddict film is an aquired taste. The first Riddick film - Pitch Black - is a cult classic. I've played Escape From Butcher Bay and own the two films and own the anime short. Riddick is a sweet mythos - but at times gets very outlandish and space operay.

It depends whether you watched it in the theatre or the director's cut on DVD.

Theatrical Version = quite brainless(the main story elements was cut out from this release including dialogue changes( more puns, no religious themes), violent parts censored for a more PG rated audience.

Director's Cut Version = Awesomeness X10<33333

The film itself does depend on your taste but i highly recommend it from my side. It's far better from that Babylon A.D crap thingy that Diesel's in right now... (i vote Babylon A.D on the same class as Battlefield Earth) >:

You are my favourite person about now. Blade Runner is like the best film ever on so many levels.

A lot of the better action titles have been mentioned so I'll throw some good dramas out there. The Quiet Earth and Solaris (the original not the Clooney remake) are among some favourites. More recently, I thought Sunshine was ok. Not great though.

You might also try Dune (1984) if you want to laugh unintentionally. It's big on action and drama but fails so hard in so many places.

Ktulu's list pretty well sums up my thoughts on the matter (especially about Metropolis, which every movie buff should see) but I'd remove Minority Report, (as it is a pile of fail with poor acting, god-awful pacing, disgustingly bad lighting, and designs that make me want to smash my face into a brick wall) and add The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Not necessarily. The movie is constructed in a way that first time viewers can get into the film as well. Now - no doubt being a fan of Firefly takes the film awesomeness to a whole new level - it is not detriment to find enjoyment with the film.

How is V for Vendetta not mentioned yet? Granted, I didn't like it that much, but a lot of people did, and I never hear the end of it.

Also, Dune is so unbelievable (as in, I didn't get into it) by today's standards. I kept waiting for the protagonist to be slaughtered.

Oh yeah, and I saw Doom for the first time the other day on TV. Definitely not a movie to buy or rent, but it kills 2 hours if you're procrastinating for writing an essay or something.
