hey, i love silent hill. anyone else love it? ive got silent hill 1,2,3 and 4 but have only completed the first 3, the fourth one isnt as good. in my oppinion the first one is the scariest, although it doesnt scare me now but it did when it first came out :) for some reason the better the graphics get the less scary it is, dunno why that is.

In what order did you play them? Maybe it has to do with you getting used to the atmosphere of the games.

There is also another Silent Hill out, Silent Hill 0, which is currently available for PSP and PS2.

I've played 1, 2 and 3... haven't gotten around to 4 yet. But I'd have to say that overall, 2 was my favorite. I've heard that 4 is mediocre at best... I'm still gonna give it a try eventually though. I've got it sittin' on my shelf over there... just have to get off my ass and play it.

Silent Hill was a brilliant series with all four titles.

Origins on the other hand disappointed me. It was too short, too boring, and the system needs something refreshing injected into it or I may fail to show interest toward an upcoming instalment.

doomjockey
08-26-2008, 03:33 AM
So yeah, I've played all and like them all for different reasons.

I think Origins is probably the weakest for scare/survival factor because it allows you to arm yourself with a larger variety of weapons both melee and missile. Can't be too scared when you can just punch the crap out of something. Or bean it with a TV. In that respect it functions more like a battle royale version of SH. While I enjoy grinding monsters into the pavement this kind of dominance seems out of place in a survival horror game.

SH4, I thought, handled the survival aspect quite well since you simply can't stop ghosts for good unless you have special items, which are strictly limited in numbers, so there is always a credible threat roaming around. The story has almost nothing to do with the core SH plot sans a few referential locations, but still creepy.

I know almost nothing about SH Homecoming besides the inclusion of a rich physics engine, but hopefully it won't be as weak as Origins.

I've beaten 2 and 3, started a game on 1 but haven't beaten it yet.

Neg

I started with 3 (because of a friend's insistence), and I really think that helped me appreciated Harry. Still, the plots of 1 and 3 seem wonky despite my love of Mr. Mason and (especially) his beautifully twisted daughter. I think because of this I came to appreciate the series for its environments and atmosphere, moreso than for its plots. That of course changed when I finished 2. I honestly found it pretty banal and meh, until...

(spoiler about end of SH2)
...that fateful viewing of James and Mary's video. The revelation that James killed Mary flips the script, in just as big a way as Vincent saying "they look like monsters, to you?"in 3. It changes everything.

Still, I love revisiting locations, and find the majority of my joy with the series in them. That being said, What say we talk about our favorite environments/locations?

1: The School--easily has my favorite transistion to the hell/nightmare side of SH that I've seen so far. Going through the clocktower. *sigh* The piano puzzle is probably my favorite in the game (Not saying it was the most difficult). Plus, I honestly feel like this installment focused too much on outside environments. A "problem" that was phased out pretty nicely, imo :p

2.: Lakeside Hotel--The transistions and hell sides were the weakest in 2, to me. But, the hotel was sprawling and delightful, nonetheless. It houses the moment discussed in the above spoiler, and a favorite (if overused) mechanic of mine: abandoning your inventory for a stretch of gameplay.

And honestly guys,

LIGHTBULBS IN A CAN!!!! Honorable mention: 4 locks on a box that has HAIR in it :D

3: Central Square Shopping Center (THE MALL!!!)--Okay, okay. I have a thing for dead malls. Join me: http://deadmalls.com/

I played Silent Hill 1-3. I like all of them, but my personal favorite is Silent Hill 2. I think because that game felt like playing a movie mystery to me. Where as the other Silent Hill games felt more like the survival horror game they were intended to be.

The story in Silent Hill 2 is very memorable, and people who don't even play videogames much admit to playing Silent Hill 2.

I never play Silent Hill 4: The Room. The concept just didn't interest me enough. Maybe I'll play it some day.

doomjockey

What say we talk about our favorite environments/locations?

Agreed, the school is one of the best locations ever in any SH.

SH2's underground area (maybe under Toluca Lake, can't remember the name) was pretty freaky. Invisible prisoner and whatnot.

SH3, I loved the freaking shopping mall, ironically since I don't like visiting malls at all for reals. Something about an empty mall and that droning song that accompanies it screams something like teenage wasteland. Without a doubt my favourite area.

SH4? The apartment. Why not.
The hauntings are pretty creepy sure, but what genuinely freaks me out is crucified Walter in his secret room. It's totally got that haunted house feel. A close second is the hospital with its corridor of 22 randomly placed rooms.

SH0 had the theatre going for it. I enjoyed the concept of placing the mirror on stage. Even though it takes you to pretty different versions of SH, they all manage to be creepy.

Silent Hill 2 is probably the pinnacle of flawless video game storytelling and atmosphere. It's like Charles Dickens joining the forum for invader zim fan fiction (Couldn't resist the Yahtzee reference.)

But yeah, great game, replaying the game, and I love having the Chainsaw. Also, how many people here loved using the Great Knife? I did :D

Also, I actually caught the Silent Hill film.. compared to most video game movies, it was pretty good.. as a movie alone... yeah... not the best, the film didn't adapt well, but the scenes with Pyramid Head were fucking awesome.

DOUBLE POST STYLEE

I rewatched the movie, and after having played 2, I'm a little up in the air about how I feel about (a) Pyramid Head being in the movie. I've read enough stuff to suggest that they are linked to the town (as evidenced by their appearance in the paintings in the Historical Society, and on the glyph on the noose podium in the prison).

However, their appearance there could easily enough be chalked up to that version of SH being built of James's perceptions. So, should I be upset that they used something unique to James in a movie that for all intents and purposes is refashioned heavily from the original game?

Bonus fun: Having finally played 2, this had me rolling when I was playing earlier tonight http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=gIPGW09zjbc

Nah. It's good service to the fans who were probably expecting to see him make an appearance. I think it was a decent thing to do since they couldn't really throw in too many overt references without alienating the mainstream audience. As far as iffy decisions go, I was far more annoyed with the decision to replace Harry's role with a general mother figure...too friggin predictable. Still a good adaptation overall though.

But, SH2 (DC or regular) is just the best for me.
1 just for being my first "scary" game
3 is just kind of fun
0 was a quick little romp

And, it was NOT worth full price....

I tried a bit of 2 on hard just now (action and riddle) and I have to say it really annoyed me greatly. Not because I couldn't handle it (I can dodge with the best of 'em ;) )but because it made me feel like I had to rush around. I know this is certainly conducive to getting a 10-star run, but it felt HORRIBLE to me. It made me realize that I like to....linger. I couldn't appreciate hole in the wall #546 because I had to run around like mad to avoid the patient demons in the apartments :o That's where I stopped, obviously.

This conclusion is certainly in line with my earlier claim that I appreciate the games for atmosphere and environments. Hard puzzle level doesn't bother me a bit, if you were wondering.

So, my fellow SH protagonists (^_^), have you ever tried and/or achieved a 10-star run on any of the games?

Nope. Not a fan of trying either. I am also a huge fan of lingering (makes me think of that old song by The Cranberries) and general time-wasting exploration. If I happen to get a good rating while I stop to bash everything in the area, good for me, but it's never a priority. Doing it this way, I believe I've achieved a max run of 7-8 stars, but it's been so long I might just be stroking my ego.

I think that's the amount I got on my first run of SH2. Mostly because I killed ALOT of bastard, and died less then ten times throughout the course of the game. Some of those guys were total weirdos though and ever since that time I've eyed my neighbours suspiciously...

I'm still with the game off and on, among other games but I'm trying to play sans firearms, which I usually do for 90% of the game until a dog really annoys me. TBH, the love triangle thing isn't worked out in my head. I can tell I'm going to be playing through it again as soon as I finish so I get to have a coherent experience (like with 2). It isn't helping that I'm insanely busy of late, and that yesterday (and today) I was feeling pretty much like death.

Still, I was bit pretty hard by 4 yesterday and I'm really glad (even if some of the story details are a little foggy). Deeper connections to 2 are certainly selling points for me, as noted above ;) Oh man, and

Has someone made the obvious FMV of SH4 set to Come on Eileen?

I have a hard time finding out where to put Holy Candles to actually let them do their magic. I've got two hauntings right now that I'm just leaving alone. One's in the bedroom and I can just automatically jet out the door without taking damage. The other is a lovely wall of babies over my box. I can open it from the hallway side, so no need to get rid of it, I guess.

Let me know if hauntings will ever take over the WHOLE apartment if left unchecked.

Oh, and you can move the load images (that little dude and the mark of Samael) with the analog stick~

Yeah, at some point if you do not take care of the hauntings, they will completely over run the apartment. At that point, there will be very little room to move around without taking any damage.

In addition, leaving the hauntings unchecked can have an effect on Eileen and...

Jeez I hate escorting. It should never be in ANY game.

Awesomely true. But that means you've made it to the hospital! Soon I shall pick your brain.

I have a hard time finding out where to put Holy Candles to actually let them do their magic.

Usually somewhere flat, like on a chair or a dresser. Sometimes I have a hard time doing so without taking damage. Failing that, Saint Medallions do the job a lot better.

Oh, and you can move the load images (that little dude and the mark of Samael) with the analog stick~

Yeah, at some point if you do not take care of the hauntings, they will completely over run the apartment. At that point, there will be very little room to move around without taking any damage.

In addition, leaving the hauntings unchecked can have an effect on Eileen and...

the ending of the game.

It's my first runthrough so I'm fine with any ending I get, but I will try to take care of them.

Agi, speaks the truth, Neg

I finally found the torch and when I did, I heard a door opening and I was like WTH?!?! It was Walter! I had already seen him twice in the woods but I am just so obscenely happy that he shows up on his own accord. It's like twisted elation. HEY WALTER, I *axe chop* LOVE *axe chop* YOU, YOU GLORIOUS BASTARD *axe chop*

Totally looked for him in my rearview mirror when I went out tonight :o

I despised the final battle in Silent Hill: The Room. I picked up every single Magnum round in the game and saved it for the final battle and after busting the final boss with every bullet , they're still alive. It takes quite a bit of swinging a melee weapon to take their sorry butt down. But, I guess it was one of the more challenging boss fights out of all the Silent Hill final battles to date.

SWEET. That has to be one of the best areas in the game. Possessed wheelchairs. Burping enemies. Dr Walter. The 22 rooms of weirdness. Did you wander through them all?

I'm not normally scared by games but there's one that still spooks me to this day

Eileen head room

...but luckily that's greatly offset by the playful wheelchairs scampering aimlessly down hall. They look quite happy to me.

Every time Henry crawls through a portal, it reminds me of James sticking his hand in that creepy hole. Maybe emerging in a familiar apartment? Wouldn't bet on it, but sounds like a great idea for a pic.

ari, I'm not too sure the boss is vulnerable all the time (depending on who we're talking about) but, yeah I never manage to end it with all the bullets in my inventory and I'm a basher who saves EVERYTHING. Then again, I've never gone in pure combat i.e. with bullets/guns taking up all my slots. Mainly cos you can't pistol whip.

I hear you finally do it in Homecoming, true??

Hi guys! Just got a quick (tech) question for SH Homecoming. Did any of you had any "problems" with loading game saves? Without spoiling anything, at a certain point, I picked up a few items for a puzzle and when I loaded my save the next day, the item had "vanished" from my item stock....and when I went back to where I picked it up, the item was NOT there seeing as I picked it up previous to saving. So I had to start over :@.....anyone else had other problems like that?? :\......thanks and SH rocks :D......

I did indeed. It was a great level, but still falls short of the building and apartment worlds. I dunno, I just have this fascination with the mundane. A deserted pet store/sports store (*cough*mall in 3*cough*) :swoon:

Finished 4, yes, yes I did.

Have to say my prediction wasn't bourne out. I was pretty well convinced that Henry was the one committing Walter's post-suicide murders :o

Have to report that it was an all melee game. Nary a single bullet fired.

Have to recommend the plot analysis by Silent Pyramid at GameFaqs. Two hours of reading it had everything making perfect sense, as opposed to the game by itself :o :o :o

In the state of Massachusetts, where
Ashfield is located, one can find two towns - Townshend and Sunderland.

Holla.

Henry's image is not that of a hero or a maniac. Just an ordinary middle-aged
man. A lonely person, who closed himself from the world in his Room. His
neighbor is another lonely person - Eileen Galvin - whom he has no interest
in. Another neighbor of his is Mike - yet another lonely person, drowning in
his unrequited love for Rachel. Room 105 is the room of Frank Sunderland, who
has lost his son and wanted to find a friend in Townshend. Room 205 holds a
gamer, who, like Henry, never leaves his apartment. 102 - a woman, who loved
cats so much, that she never found a human being to love. And numerous other
instances of the same thing. This is reality - millions of lonely people,
languishing in their own cages ("coin lockers") and living their only life in
"happy" loneliness, dying little by little every day of this existance.

Wowza. Elenor Rigby (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=k9Itt02QOO0), can't resist ;)

Accordingly, the rewrite I came up with after I played it for the first time:

"I'm fixing a hole where the pain gets in, and stops my life from wandering, where it will go~"

I've jokingly made fun of 4 for being different, but at the end of the day, I absolutely adore it. You can see the Silent Shriners thread in GD for more of my opinion on why it's good that it's different from 1-3.

Doomjockey already said it in this thread, 4 embodies the survival aspect moreso than the first 3. You can't put down ghosts permanently for the most part (yes, there are the 5 swords of obedience), so it makes the game much more nerve wracking and challenging, even on easy.

When I play 1-3, I end up with dozens of health drinks and tens of med kits. In 4, it feels like every single one counts after the apartment stops healing you.

Neg

Were you as dumb as me and tried to solve that love triangle with the phone call? NOT RECOMMENDED.

I have now ^___^ Pretty simple really, Frank and others thought that Mike was her boyfriend, when in actuality it's the artist in 202.

Richard bumped into Mike in the hall, dragged him into his apartment, stripped him naked and beat him. Walter (and the gamer) thought that he really skinned him (hence the name on the tape and Walter killing him via electricution), when he actually just took his best clothes. The drunk took the shirt ("I'll keep this one for myself") and the cat lady took the jeans to wrap her dead cat in.

I like all 4 games, 4 wasn't as scary to me, and yeah; 1 was creepiest. Though 2 and 4 had certain enemies that scared the heck outta me o_o.

I think the reason 1 feels scarier is the cruder graphics. The harder it is to make something out, the scarier it is. Not to mention 1 had allot of disorienting and grotesque indoor areas.

Doom 64? I swear, I dunno how people decide what's survival horror these days.

I also dunno how prepared those games make you for SH. SH is classic survival horror so expect finite bullets, more retreat, and more puzzles.

Is Silent Hill Origins even worth playing?

I think Origins is probably the weakest for scare/survival factor because it allows you to arm yourself with a larger variety of weapons both melee and missile. Can't be too scared when you can just punch the crap out of something. Or bean it with a TV. In that respect it functions more like a battle royale version of SH. While I enjoy grinding monsters into the pavement this kind of dominance seems out of place in a survival horror game.

That said, it adheres very closely to staples of SH goodness (like psychological terror for poor Travis) so I think it was well worth the playthru.

Lol I know exactly what you mean.

Also, according to my friend, SH4 wasn't originally going to be a SH game; it was just going to be called "The Room". But in fear that the game wouldn't sell, they made some minor changes to the script/dialogue and changed the names of some places and people and then slapped the Silent Hill name on it. I've never cared about it so I haven't really checked into it myself.

But Origins felt like a Silent Hill game, but it felt like a different game that I can't explain at the same time. The first 3 SH games felt like I was playing SH. Homecoming had that eerieness that SH has, but you can't help but feel like you're playing RE4/5 in a SH setting.

Silent Hill is my by far my favorite game series. I enjoyed 2 the most though I'm not a big fan of Homecoming. For awhile there I was wary of either Origins or Homecoming because they weren't done by Team Silent but Origins was well done despite plot holes. I just find it funny that in the first 4 SHs the main characters have little to no fighting ability whatsoever, yet as soon as the Americans got a hold of the rights they put a punch-happy trucker and a soldier in the main character slot. That's why I'm excited for the Wii's Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for I heard there will be a serious lack of weapons in the game. I read in an interview with the games creators in NP that they didn't want SH to become like RE in the way that RE is more of an action-horror than a survival-horror because you feel so empowered by your weaponry in RE while SH should be more about being afraid of the enemies/monsters and not just being able to plow through them.

I'm also a big fan of the games' music by Yamaoka who I find to be a musical genius. The fact that his favorite SH is 2 is a big reason why I enjoy it so damn much. I liked the OST for Origins as well but Homecoming wasn't what I expected from a SH game. This is mainly because while I realize that there are going to be ambient long, droning bg music as a part of the soundtrack, I didn't expect 99% of the music to be this way. I like previous OSTs for their song songs with singing and lyrics. All in all, if I had to recommend what SHs to play to someone, I would only recommend 1-3.

Neg

I took my time on the first, making sure I got everything and such and killed as many monsters as I could. Second time I didn't use my flashlight (didn't know about this until after I beat the first play-through), and only killed the bosses and one's that got in my way, and the UFO ending, last time...I ran my ass off. Since I had that alien rifle, the bosses went down easy.

My friend got the game before me and he told me pretty much what I said I did. He didn't tell me why though. But after 20 hours in my first play through (just to get everything, get familiar with what triggers which cutscene, and kill every monster), I pretty much knew why after a lot of shit was unlocked for my second time.

A lot of SH's history involves the civil war, with the cult forming shortly thereafter. It'd be genius.

IDX
05-08-2009, 03:02 PM
Did not know that. Now that I think about it, they never said how or why the cult was formed, did they? The only thing close to it's roots was in the movie about how the founders of the town were witch hunters, but that's about it. Unless I missed something of course.

I have played 4 and beaten it two times! A few years in between but it matters not! But it's not the kind where I can play it repeatedly like the other ones. Not one of my favorites. I think it moves too slow until towards the end.

And if you can summarize it in a few short paragraphs, I'll read it :).

Neg
05-09-2009, 02:09 AM
Alright, I'll write you up a summary this weekend.

There's a couple tidbits about the history of the cult in 4, of course you have to find all the memos, which is easier than having Eileen read all the journal entries in the woods. Good lord, that's what made me start beating her in the first place.

I can play 4 repeatedly, but I play SHs more than anything else, mainly because they are relatively short. So yes, more than Pokemon.

Alright, IDX, from skimming back over the FAQ, this is the short of it. Right after the civil war Jennifer Carroll was murdered by the Christians for her faith regarding the Order (the cult). Just check out her statue in Rosewater Park in 2. She lived with Nicholas who is called the doctor of god in one of the paintings in the church of SH3, iirc. So basically the idea is she gave birth to the first coming of 'god.'

This is all really sketchy, which is why I prefer the (overtly) character driven Silent Hills more (2, 4, Origins), as opposed to those dealing with the cult in specific (1, 3; I'll argue that 4, while about the cult, is more about that dreamboat Walter, his victims, and those lovely tenants of S. Ashfield Heights~)

BLAST FROM THE PAST RESPONSE FOR ARI

Haven't played Origins. I heard the game was rather disappointing, so I wasn't even sure I should even bother with it... Should I?

Opinions differ. Purrr found it to be repetitive. Think he used the word bullshit, too :o

I found it to be delightfully character driven in spite of it being technically an odd numbered entry. Is it short? Yes, one of the achievements is finishing it in 2 hours. However, the environments are fleshed out well and it incorporates the ability to move between the nightmare and misty worlds at will, when faced with a mirror. It's Link to the Past with rust and blood :D

I genuinely love Travis and it might sound crazy, but in some ways I want to make it my second favorite SH.

I think I might play it again on my PS2...after I beat Re:Chain of Memories. Maybe.

Neg

Bad ending IS quite fun ^_^

I don't like planning out what I'm going to play next--makes it feel like work and not fun--but there is a greater than 0 chance of me playing Homecoming in the VERY near future.

Especially seeing as I'm the last of our gory band to play it.

I'd say I need to be ready for Shattered Memories, but who am I kidding, I never play games right away :o

Assuming you're talking about R:CoM, then it's alright. Not a big fan of there being not nearly as much dialogue as the others, but it DID come from the GBA. But it can be hard at times and can make you want to kick a baby during others :). Because I've played it on the GBA, it just feels pretty...I dunno, familiar? It's more fun to me than the GBA though.

I dunno! I like it. We'll just leave it at that.

I may have to pick it up just for kicks then. I've bought far worse games (e.g. Mario is Missing, Sonic and the Secret Ring). At least SH0 wouldn't as bad as those.

The only problem is this game seems to be extremely scarce to find these days... if I can't find it in-store somewhere, may have to resort to ebay.

I remember talking to Solaris and she decided she wanted to play the series. That made me think and realize that it can be an expensive proposition if you aren't lucky enough to have well stocked game stores with healthy used sections. Sometimes, even that doesn't help, as I've seen plenty of the entries going for $30, in said sections.

Getting into this series can be expensive, if you don't play it smart. And you wonder why I try to snag every copy I run across (besides the initial need to replace the ones I borrowed from a friend and sent to other friends :erm:) ;)

I sent her a copy of 2. Wonder if she ever played it...

I can get Origins again for $19.99 for either PSP of PS2 at this local comic book shop. The first and third games are the most expensive I think. I mean, if you see the first one going for $50, second for $10, and third for $40, then you might want to have a pretty healthy wad of cash if you want to get them.

Yeah, I saw Origins on amazon.com for $19.99 + shipping. However, I'm gonna see if any places here in town have it first before resorting to online ordering.

I prefer my games in brand new condition. I don't like used games because I would say 60% of game owners don't take care of their discs properly.

I'm only missing the first and second ones. I played those when my brother was living with us. I have 3 and up though. He doesn't. LOL.

I lucked out on getting the first one as cheap as I did. $20 was my bid on ebay (my maximum) and someone did the same after me. But because I placed mine first, mine counted. If they put in a penny more, I would've lost. And it had hardly any scratches on it too.

Neg

I've played the first and second one. LOVED the first one! The second one was so creepy, but awesome! Working on Origins right now. <3<3 Just finished beating the boss at the theater and heading toward the Riverside Motel. I'm loving Origins!! Except for the sanitarium. Ugh...

I am ~planning~ on playing the third and fourth installment. I want to play Homecoming, too. But I don't have the right game console or the right computer requirements to play it. But I'm really glad I'll be able to play most of the series. :D

Random question, would anyone know where I could buy the actual soundtracks, NOT bootlegs?

Neg

Sanitarium bugged me at first, too. And then I realized that I didn't like it because I was getting lost and it was creeping me out (just like the subway in 3 did the first time) and so I figured hey it's doing its job. And, doing it well.

It really is the biggest trouble when doing a speedrun to get the Sprinter accolade. Just takes practice, though.

Thanks for the link to the script, Eddie! I usually just use the memo faq at gamefaqs, but having the script is really handy. I bookmarked it :)

I'd recommend looking for a place that sells anime/video game kinda merchandise. There's this place close by me that sells replica's of weapons and stuff from anime and video games. They also sell toys, soundtracks, and trading cards. If there isn't a place like that near you, ebay works too. My friend bought the SH2 OST from there. I burned myself a copy before finding it at a shop in Kansas for $20 so I bought it for myself (along with the KHII OST and a live orchestra of FF music).

Thanks for the advice! I'll try the game shop close by my place and take a look. Hopefully I'll also find SH3 and The Room games used (along with the soundtracks).

Is there any way to tell which OSTs are the real and official releases from ones that aren't?

IDX
06-22-2009, 01:32 AM
I know that Silent Hill 3 had the soundtrack included with the game. But as far as I know, that's the only one that was released "officially" outside of Japan. Most stores import the soundtracks so usually, there's some kind of paper thing covering some of the left side of the case that has Japanese writing on it. Hard to explain but all the video game soundtracks I have had this paper cover thingy.

You can look on amazon, ebay, or whatever site that sells the CDs to get a look at what the real one's look like. If you ask, I'm sure they'll tell you if they're bootlegs or not.
