Hiall,
usually I mostly rip Rockman stuff, but for my first GH contribution, I picked out something really special:

Finally!
After more than 10 years, I've finally managed to gather the necessary tools to
give this long overseen PC version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles a proper music rip.

Granted, many fans wouldn't even bother giving this version a try, since MIDI is obviously
"pure evil and has been crafted by Satan himself", but someone like me, who grew up with the
PC version of S3K long before hearing the Mega Drive version and it's differences the first time,
has been waiting for a long time to finally have it in MP3 form.
Alone the alternative versions of Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base Zone are worth it,
which turned out that way since the original Mega Drive music partly came with samples that were not supported by MIDI.

The only actual MIDI files to the game that have been floating on the internet for a while
came from a horribly broken rip with many breaks in between and lacking any loops.
So, I took it upon myself to make the best rip of it to date.

The first step was to properly rip the MIDI files from the game and give them seamless looping points.
The second and more ambitious step was to encode the tracks with custom SF2 sound fonts
found at http://soundfonts.homemusician.net/.
I am not a professional musician for making a full fledged and perfect custom instrument setup for each track,
but I gave it my best to make the rip stand out from your average General MIDI sound.

Tools used:
-Sonic & Knuckles PC CD: To get the tracks directly from the sound test.
-MIDI-OX: For recording the MIDI signals into files.
-XMPlay & MIDI Plug in (v0.6): To turn the MIDI into wave files and equipping them with decent sound fonts.
-Adobe Audition: Minor editing.
-LAME 3.98

Sound fonts used:
-FluidR3 GM /GS
-Twenty Bank
-Creative 2/4MB General MIDI

As a bonus, I also threw in my original General MIDI files with original sound test numbering.

Enjoy, mucho!

47 - The Doomsday Zone
At 0:13, you kicked major ass for balancing the volume on the instruments. On some occasions when playing the original song through the Mega Drive or a ported version, one of the instruments plays too loudly, and could only be fixed by the normal means of switching to Mono or doing some internal work. Kudos for that.

Kick-ass work on the rest of the collection. =)

Heh, thank you. But all I really did was assign the instrument banks, most of the praise actually goes to whoever assembled those excellent sound fonts.

If you ask me, this rip even rivals the official Sonic & Knuckles Arragement album in terms of instrument quality. I especially like how well Sandopolis Zone turned out, with all authentic sounding flutes.

Sandopolis Zone got a very Egyptian feel to it now than before, that's for sure. =D

Thank you for the sound rips and recordings Splashman.

I grew up playing this on Windows 95 and didn't have a Genesis when I was little.

Didn't think I would ever be able to hear these arrangements again.

When I joined this site, this was one of my first downloads. I absolutely loved these arrangements then, and I love them now. If you ask me, I think this is the definitive edition of the Sonic & Knuckles Collection soundtrack. Thank you for your work, Splashman. You did this old game justice.
