Yeah, the chances of the whole 'remake' thing going away isn't very likely. Enix has been remaking their games since the early 90s and now that Square is Enix' cash cow I'd say they'll be following suit.

As far as the remake goes, as much as I want them to do it, and I think they will end up doing it, it will not be until they finish working on XIII and versus XIII. They are also working on Agito, Parasite Eve 3, the Last Remnant, Dissida and Star Ocean 4. They are too busy now for a remake of VII.

If there is going to be an announcement for a VII remake - the next best venue would be the Tokyo Game Show in October. I for one hope there will be a remake - After watching Advent Children and playing Crisis Core and Dirge Of Cerberus - it is hard to connect FFVII to these new properties simply because of the disparity in the graphics.

One can argue the quality of the finished products of AC, CC and DoC - what can be said is that they gleamed interesting looks into the FFVII universe. Also considering that CG movies where made for all the games / movies at the same time - it feels like you are engaging in a larger entity. Playing as Zack in CC, you interact with then a puny pre-mako infused Cloud who looks exactly as he does in the Advent Children movie. When you play as Vincent in Dirge - he appears as he did in AC. I would like a remake to tie FFVII into the new properties visually. Hell - they don't even have to have any voice acting and I would be content. Just a graphical overhaul would be more then enough for most fans.

The ONLY thematic change I dislike with the new FFVII material has been the shift of Sephiroth's involvement. For those that really paid attention to FFVII's story 10 years ago - it became apparent that Seppy wasn't in control but it was Jenova who was pulling the strings all along.

Now - a quick little blurb in the FFVII Ultimecia now gives Sephiroth fan boys the world over the 'proof' they have been looking for years that proves Sephiroth is the most badassed of the bad asses.

Thats what we're all hoping it WILL be.

If they change the story-line or anything apart from the graphics, they'll get flamed by almost every FFVII fan on the planet.

Well - I didn't mean so much as changes in the story. What I mean is - extra stuff without changing the story. More mini games - extra bosses - tweaks to the gameplay. Additional scenes from say - CC / Dirge via flashbacks. I'm just thinking of a few examples here.
