I thought it looked absolutely fucking terrible. Sure, a lot of it was nice-looking, and I did geek out over plenty of the stuff in the trailer, but it looks like it'll be shit for one of the main reasons I hated 300: way too damn much slow motion.

Funny, I liked that movie for the same reason.
Compared to Gladiator, it actually let you see what was happening, rather than just chaos - yes, I know it was intended to show the complete chaos of hand-to-hand combat in the battlefield.

In no way am I saying that 300 is better than Gladiator.

I saw this before the Dark Knight too. Honestly, it got me more excited than the Batman flick. The song, btw, is "The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning", an alternate version of the faster "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" used for the crappy film Batman & Robin in '97.

Let's hope Watchmen is waaaaaaay better.

The trailer looks fantastic. Considering Synder's past work and watching just a few interviews and video blogs with him - it looks like this might be the "Citizen Kane of comic book movies" we've been waiting for. From what I've seen very little (if any) of the story has been altered; aside from cutting of things to give the movie an acceptable running time. Also keep in mind - anything cut can and will be on an extended DVD edition. They are also talking now to work in the comic within the comic "Tales of the Black Freighter" into the movie in the DVD edition. This movie is going to be great.

Watch the video interviews with Synder - he is doing the movie with the 100% utmost respect for the source material. I don't think slow motion will be a problem since there aren't that many fight scenes in the story.

I hear the movie runs a little over 2 hours and that the directors tried their best to cut out very little from the novel. Their storyboard the novel, afterall. However, I know at some point I saw petitions online to keep the movie at it's full length runtime because they wanted to cut it to make it shorter.

I'm just a bit nervous about the movie. I read the novel recently and it absolutely blew my mind on how great it was. So naturally I'm fearing the worst and thinking they'll fuck up. =/

It doesn't matter how long the movie will be when it is first released - it won't reflect how long it will be when it comes out on DVD. I get the feeling the DVD release of Watchmen is going to be freaking huge and will be the version everyone refers to when they talk about the movie.

Hey, if Kevin Smith is worshiping it, that must be saying something!!! lol
On an article of the Wizard, he says that it pretty much takes comic book adapts to a whole new level!
Pretty much, I cant wait to see it next year! I'm so tempted in reading the book, but I'd rather see the movie first, then go back and read it. That way I won't be dissapointed. I did the same thing with Wanted, and although not alot of fans liked it, I liked both, and treat them as separate stories.

Apart from the fact that the CGI Dr.Manhattan doesn't look too great and the face that they've changed the ending I'm quite looking forward to it still. The ending is quite different but I feel that from the looks of things it still has the same symbolism when all is said and done.

This trailer looks pretty awesome too. I think they only thing they did wrong with Dr. Manhattan was choosing a guy who doesn't really look like him before he becomes Dr. Manhattan.

I haven't followed any news about the film so far. I was starting to become interested, but if they rewrote the ending, the movie can fuck off.

I knew nothing really of watchmen before the trailer at dark knight, sept for passing by the books in between musty, pimply magic and poke' card players at the local comic shop. I'd have to say though, i liked the first trailer better.... First trailer, in my opinion, built the anticipation of the movie more.

I have pretty much the same sentiments if they changed the ending. I guess minor changes I can deal with. I heard they did not plan on using the alien-creature at the end at one point.

Yeah, I don't think it really matters that it's different as surely it has the same meaning even now?

If they were to use atomic weapons as I read in one part, then I don't see how it has the same meaning. What I find is that the alien-creature gives reason for the world to unite itself against a common enemy. Atomic weapons can just conotate another enemy existing on earth. So thus, just bringing about more war.

At least, that is how I summed it up in my head.

*spoliers*

I heard that Dr.Manhattan is blamed for the nukes. Sure it's not the squid but it's still an otherworldly-like being either way. The reason for the plan will be the same and I don't see the exclusion of the squid upsetting that too much imo. Sure I'd love to have the original ending but the studio has to appeal to a wider audience and one that would find a giant green squid a little silly and camp.

I think there's too much talk about the whole squid issue anyway. It could have been a terrorist attack, a disease or anything else to cause mass fatalities, it doesn't matter what it was. It just matters that it happened and united the world as one. Like 9/11 times 13, methinks. Well, that's how I feel anyway.

Solaris
11-15-2008, 01:46 AM
I don't find 9/11 to be very world uniting. It united a nation and then just had everyone pointing fingers and someone who caused it. I guess Dr. Manhattan could be a uniting factor, but still even then it doesn't tie in too well. =/

I wouldn't mind if they removed the space-squid. Even when I read it - I found that to be a hard concept to swallow. The images of all the people dead though was a very startling image - more so than the squid. Of course any change will piss of Alan Moore - but that is besides the point. Much like they updated the costumes so they didn't feel as "camp" - a change to the space-squid probably won't take away as much as some might think. Of course - now you have to deal with the fact you don't need to devote any time in telling the audience that famous artists / writers have gone missing - when you do that then the plan to include the comic within the comic seems arbitrary.

Of course - the story could remain intact to a T on the DVD release.

I am old enough (sigh!) to have read the graphic novels at the first issue, and the comic reading public was pretty split over its style at the time as I recall.
Having watched the trailers, I dug out the dog eared copies I still have and re-read them ...YUP!. They seem to have it down pretty close. This film will either be "HUGE" or it will mystify the general moviegoer and flop!!

me neither, its cause the squid is bizarre and other worldly, a threat mankind couldn't have imagined, whereas who'd be terribly surprised if a load of nuclear bombs went off, its kind of what they're built for.
