Pretty amazing, still can't believe my luck -- so today I messing about in the Ozmone Plains -- fighting the Garif Adventurer so that I could finally finish out that bestiary entry. So I went back to go save 'cause I was wrapping up, when to my wondering eyes, what should appear but the Lv. 99 Red Chocobo. I am not kidding -- I wasn't even going after chocobos and I'm not sure if I had even killed six since the time I had started the game. (Though I guess I had to have, since it's apparently absolutely not possible for it to show up without killing six, though it doesn't need to be a chain.) Well, this was the first time I had ever seen the sucker in all my time of playing FFXII, so of course I fought it, and killed it. Stole the Empyreal Soul from it, and Elixir. Drop was Ribbon and Gemsteel. If you have Libra equipped, his HP reads as 99,999, though apparently that's just what the game maxes out at. It's actually a little less than 2.5 times more than that.

Here's the wild thing though -- after I beat him, I decided to wander about the area some. So I went off, killed off a few more chocobos and Vipers and then when I returned to the area near Jahara -- the Lv. 99 Chocobo had respawned!!! So I did the whole thing all over again -- this time my steal was Elixir/Megalixir and once again I got Gemsteel/Ribbon.

(One other thing -- LV. 99 Red shows a most fantastic shade of red when flashing red because it's in critical status.)

Ohhh, that sounds good...I was going after all the hunts at the moment but I may as well go slay a couple of these Chocobos...if they do appear. Are they in the area where you enter the Salikawood? I remember seeing some black Chocobos around there.

Not that I know of. To my knowledge, and as far as everything I've read goes, the Lv. 99 Red Chocobo only appears in the Ozmone Plains and only in the area that has the entrance to Jahara.

(Oh, and as far as the chocobo goes, it's actually supposed to be really rare, Egami, so happy trails. I hope you do find it, but don't be disappointed if you don't. I've read of people spending hours on it -- that's one of the reasons why I was so astounded to encounter it twice like I did when I wasn't even going after it. And be careful -- Level 99. Red's only attack is a powerful Choco Comet that it uses a lot, and it's very good at evading attacks. So you definitely need a strong party, or you'll have trouble. But if your characters are all pretty well-leveled, it should be all right. I think it's also weak against Thunder based magic attacks, though I didn't try that myself.)

What luck! I wish I could find a couple of them. I spent about 7 hours looking for one. (I wanted the ribbon so I could use the Demon Shield without getting the negative status effects.) I still have yet to find one.

Alright, thanks for the info. I tried to find it yesterday but no luck. Oh well, back to the hunts...need to beat that Pylraster now.

For all of you having trouble finding the Lv.99 Red Chocobo (like I was), I found a nice video. The description didn't make much sense to me but after watching the video I tried it my self. Not long after I did what it showed I managed to make one appear.

Yep, that's what I did. I got one, but it wasted me. Ah well, my average level was 66 anyway. Unless you have some trick to avoid it, Agent and whoever else found it, what was your average level?

There's no negative status effects with the Demon Shield >.>? I have two of them and it is like evade 45 or 50 and absorb Dark element. No harmful effects on it?

Well, I have three characters at Level 99, so I was running around with my lower level party and just stuck with it. I think the average level was somewhat higher, maybe somewhere from 70-75. I mainly just hacked away with physical attacks since I had strong weapons and armor. I think on the first battle I even tossed a Megalixir because my party had come in drained of MP, but only because I had a few anyway and didn't see any reason not to (I've completed everything else in the game, including Yiazmat and Omega XII, so I figured "why not?")

Oh, and BTW, there's a free Ribbon in the Pharos Subterra.

Oh, and BTW, there's a free Ribbon in the Pharos Subterra.

I know, as well as in the Henne Mines and the Cerobi Steppe, already had one. and I have no use for Gemsteels as I made the Tournesol and Masamune already, and I know it doesn't count at the Bestiary. However, I wouldn't call the game complete without at least encountering and killing a Lv99 Red Chocobo.

It really is a shame that there is no special reward or aftermath or proof of having killed one. I would have expected at least a Sky Pirate's Den thing, a Montblanc reward, or a seperate Bestiary entry.

Yes. That is what I meant. I sometimes get the shields mixed up since I usually never use them. It also turns out that I was doing this for nothing, since the ribbon (I finally got three of them) doesn't prevent the status ailments from the shield.

Yeah, 'tis a shame. I guess it's just one of those things that's in large part just there for fun. Oh, I read something elsewhere about there apparently being a Lv. 99 Wild Saurian also. Anyone know anything about that?

Screw you, man. :p I grinded (or is it "ground?") those freaking chocobos for THREE FREAKING HOURS and I couldn't get ONE, let alone two. Now I'm really pissed.

I haven't heard of one appearing like the Lv.99 Red Chocobo, but you can lure the wolves in the Estersand to the Wild Saurian. He will eventually use cannibalize on them and grow levels. You can keep doing this until he is Level 99, sadly this way his hp maxes out at about 14,000 but you can hardly damage him even at level 99 yourself.

No, I "merely" cast Break on all the chocobos I encountered. After three hours of it, I got rather pissed off and put FFXII down. I'm playing KH now; I just made it to Agrabah.
