...Leave the score alone.

Come on, the junction system and the characters and the backstory and Triple Triad (well, not so much) being hateable I can completely understand.
But there is absolutely no denying that the game had one of the best scores out there, definitely the best since the PS generation.

That is all. ~

So, um... to add more of a point, what's everyone's favorite song in this game?

If I told you mine you guys would laugh.

Oooh, that means your favorite was "Eyes on Me." Hahahaha, you like a girl song. (I liked that one too)

I did like FFVIII's score pretty well, although I don't think it's as good as FFVI's or FFVII's.

A while ago, FFVIII had the best musical score for any FF games (FFX was already out and when they were still saying this). I'm not sure where it stands right now, but it's my favorite score from any video game with Kingdom Hearts placing second.

My favorite song would have to be either Compression of Time or Premonition.

I honestly think FFVI or FFIX might have the best scores. I do like some of the scores on FFVIII though. Those being Compression of Time, Premonition, and The Castle.

Not as good as FFVII's... um... sorry but no. FFVII's has many tracks that are mixed more than they need to be. All the Ami variations > Aeris' Theme any day.

I actually don't like the lyriced overcommercialized ones. But anyway, mine is "Residents". No joke...

"Residents" is a fun one! But I forget when it's actually played in the game...

Yeah, this is a great soundtrack, especially after listening to the simplistic sounds of FFVII. It's actually one of the first soundtracks I bothered to import along with the arranged version.

That is a shocker. I totally thought you'd say "The Extreme" as much as I've seen you praise it.

But yeah, anyway, I'm picking "The Castle" which plays in Ultimecia's Castle near the end of the game. It reminds me of "Dancing Mad" somewhat.

Wow someone does pay attention... or were you one of the guys that replied to my piano recording thread, seeing as that's the one I started with? The Extreme is actually a close second, and yes, Castle isn't too far behind either.

But... nah, Residents is unlike any other track. If anyone can name something on another FF OST (or also on VIII) that reminds them of Residents or vice versa that Residents reminds them of, I would want to know what I'm forgetting...

I can't (completely). Me and my big mouth (I'll get flamewared now)... Anyway putting aside things like taste, lack of musical knowledge, etc. I'd say that FFVIII has the best orchestrated soundtrack of all FF. About which ones I like... well, there are too many plus we've done that discussion again.

Even though I do not like FFVIII, I would definitely argue in favour of its soundtrack. There are a number of good tracks and a few outstanding ones, such as 'Liberi Fatali'.

I probably prefer XII and VII's soundtracks to it, though.

Hmm, I'm kind of caught between FF7 and FF8 with the music. I think I prefer the FF7 score overall, but when it comes to the songs that you hear the most (battle/boss scores, damn card game) - I'd probably go for FF8. I do love those old FF7 battle themes, but I think FF8 just had the edge there :)

Alright, so it seems everyone seems to think the FFVII soundtrack is better or on par with this one, can I ask why? I'd like an answer from non-fanboys, please.
As for why not, well... while some VII tracks were great, there were not as many that stood out. The Shinra Themes got boring fast (I don't quite understand the praise they get) and by now I'm sick of OWA (as probably a lot are right now), and there are all those other Sephiroth themes that recur those three notes... eh. Birth of a God is probably the only one I can still praise, along with a few other non-Seph tracks. The location themes also kinda got repetitive after a while and gave me a headache, as good as they were at first, with the Forested Temple as an exception. I didn't have that problem with VIII.

It sucks how it's ALWAYS the place that you don't get to revisit that has the best location theme. Forested Temple in VII, Via Purifico in X, Draklor Labs in XII...

Alright I'm straying off topic here.

I prefer VII's soundtrack over VIII's because there are definitely more memorable songs in VII. Honestly, even after all these years of not playing either, only the boss battle music sticks out from VIII, while many from VII are etched in my mind. Tifa's theme, Cid's theme, Aeris' theme, Those Who Fight, Those Who Fight Further, Jenova, Jenova-Synthesis, the song that plays at the beginning, the song that plays during the Bizarro Sephiroth fight, Meteor's theme (I think), etc. etc. etc.

Tough call between 7 & 8, I think i preferred 8 to 7 though. 7 seemed a bit dark and drab, but it went with the game.... 8 seemed a little more uplifting and melodic, symphonic... or whateva

As much as I like the thread, I'm afraid that there's already an existing discussion of the topic (Thread 755) that isn't all that old over in the Anime and Video Game Music section, which is where all discussion of this type is supposed to be posted. Going to have to close.
