I Love Doctor Who, have since the mid 80's when I was a 6 year old kid watching it on the local PBS station.

Not sure when it will start airing down under but in the US we have 4 episodes left.

The series finale has been and gone over here in the UK... 65min special to close it all up for you awaits. All I'll say is that as much as the final 2-parter is good, it's very very cramped and could have done with being a 3-parter.

Roll on the Christmas special with the Cybermen that's all I'm saying! :P

EDIT: Also, sorry to sound so pedantic... but should the official thread for Doctor Who on here really be called THE DOCTOR WHO STUFF THREAD? Doesn't sound too official really... I'd have thought "The Official Doctor Who Thread" would sound more, well... official? lol.

Just a suggestion of course, if we're going to make this thread successful etc.

I am a huge fan as well. I used to watch it with my dad during
the 80s. It was one of the few times I could stay up late.. I
have since rediscovered my likeness for it. I watch both Old
series and New series. ( Hence my Delgado ava with Simms
sig. well I haven't got my Delgado sig made yet so...)

I love the classic Doctor Who, especially the Tom Baker era. We have the whole Key to Time series segment on DVD. My grandfather and uncle taped almost every single episode, including the very first, "An Unearthly Child." I remember when the show was on PBS.

I like this new version of Doctor Who okay, but I would like it more if it wasn't for the RoseXDoctor shippines in the new series. I'm old school, and I feel that the writers should not make an entire story arc involving the Doctor having a romantic relationship with a companion. Rose is likable, but the whole romance thing that started up rubs me the wrong way. I find it nauseating.

Episodes of the new series that I really like include "Blink," several episodes of the current season, and "The End of the World," with Christopher Eccleston. I find Eccleston to be an awesome Doctor.

Rogue9a
07-10-2008, 06:46 AM
well the whole arc wasn't about their relationship, yeah she was in love with him and yeah he believes he could love her but the Rose arc was more about something else which is revealed in the season finale of the forth series

And, btw, what are you on about gara?

Shoden
07-11-2008, 03:04 PM
I admit, I'm a fan and watch the series when I can, but I feel like Eccleston was more of a childish fun loving take on the doctor, focusing more on the fact he can go anywhere, meet anyone and that Tennant put in a more serious, emotional variety of takes, from the lonely last of his kind to an all knowing sly fox who can get himself and his friends out of most situations.
I enjoy some of the classics when they're on too.

I'm not a HARDCOOOOOOOOORE fan though.

Theta Sigma

Well I'm more a Whovian than a hardcore fan, the sci-fi geek type who one day WILL go to a convention whether people like it or not haha! The type who has a replica [not plastic] Fob Watch as used in the 3rd series of the current format etc... so yeah, I doubt even hardcore covers myself! :P

Series 4 [or 30 depending on how you want to look at it] is rather hit and miss in my opinion... there are some fantastic episodes during it's run [Silence in the Library springs to mind], yet there were some absolutley rubbish ones at the same time [Midnight anyone?].

I personally think the best modern series so far is the second, although Donna is a superb companion, the original run for Rose was just sheer brilliance with Tennant. Episodes like New Earth, Girl in the Fireplace, Doomsday... all classics, a quality they sadly seem to have not matched since. It's been good don't get me wrong, but no series has been consistant as that one.

And while you're all watching series 4... I can now only look forward to Return of the Cyberman at Christmas, and then a measily 3 episodes next year... hmph!

Theta Sigma
07-19-2008, 11:57 AM
From Wikipedia
In The Armageddon Factor, the Time Lord Drax addresses the Fourth Doctor as "Thete", short for "Theta Sigma". He is called by this name again in the Paul Cornell novel Goth Opera; later, in The Happiness Patrol, this was clarified as a nickname from the Doctor's University days. In Remembrance of the Daleks the Seventh Doctor produces a calling card with a series of pseudo-Greek letters inscribed on it (as well as a stylised question mark). This may be a reference to Terrance Dicks' and Malcolm Hulke's book The Making of Doctor Who (1972), which claims that the Doctor's true name is a string of Greek and mathematical symbols.

'tis possibly one of the doc's true names.

I'm with you on this one. The fandom would explode with wank if they ever revealed his true name.

And to be honest, I don't really want to know. He's the Doctor, and that's enough for me :)

Just to be clear, I do like the name Theta Sigma. But I'd like to think it's just what the canon's been implying so far, a memory of his days in the Academy, and not his real name.

Theta Sigma

Ruttokoira
07-31-2008, 01:08 PM
Oh, Tennant is brilliant; his Doctor is adorkable, but there's still that darker side, which surfaces on occasion. And he pulls that off well.
..yet, I do believe Eccleston did that even better. He could really show us all the sides of the Doctor's personality. To me, he was everything the Doctor is supposed to be.

As for why he only stayed for one series, I've read somewhere CE himself isn't a huge fan of the series, he mostly took the job 'cause he wanted a challenging role, and to work with RTD.
I'd love to see him in Who again, maybe in a special (like Time Crash, with Five)?

And fave ep, yes! This is a tough one, but.. I guess it's the S1 two-parter The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Jack's intro! Dancing Doctor! "Everybody lives!" :D

being as to how i'm still pretty new to the series, i haven't seen every episode.
but it would be interesting if they brought in all the people who played the doctor in an episode(or a few). from the very first to now.
that's just a thought i figure i'd throw out there.

so far my favorite episode was that one where they were in a mine or something where to humans and some creatures were fighting each other and they were cloning themselves so that more troops could fight and the doctors clone is a bad ass chick. well the episode was something like that, oh, and the doctor had revealed that he had children before. that was cool episode.

Yup, he died 1975 (aged 67). Troughton and Pertwee (Two and Three, respectively) are dead as well. Baww :(

Theta Sigma
08-02-2008, 12:36 PM
wow, i just guessed. Thats sad.

Rogue9a
08-05-2008, 08:39 AM
yeah Hartnell would have been 100 this year if he hadn't died.

An interesting fact though
William Hartnell was 67
Patrick Troughton was 67, he died in 1987 at a Doctor Who convention in Georgia.
Jon Pertwee was 76, he died in 1996
Tom Baker is 74 right now
Peter Davison is 57 now
Colin Baker is 65 now but I doubt he'd come back he looks very different.
Sylvester McCoy is 64 and looks great I can see him coming back as the Doctor
Paul McGann is 48 and since he was only in the TV Film he could come in at anytime it wouldn't matter how much he's aged, which isn't all that much.
then of course we have Christopher Eccleston and the current Doctor David Tennant.

So really only maybe 3 other Doctors could show up again, 4 if Peter came back for another one.

Ruttokoira
08-05-2008, 09:52 AM
I'd love to see McCoy back; an episode with Five, Seven, Nine and Ten would be a dream come true :)

ok. we dont have stuff like that in aus i dont think.

Rogue9a

That would be kind of surprising, I know most countries have the mail rental service

You can also catch some episodes on youtube it just takes some wording, typing in Doctor who along with the name of an episode should get most of the ones that are out. Sadly most of the 1st and 2nd Doctor's episodes are lost, either destroyed or misplaced. The BBC destroyed most of the master tapes to clear up space in the 70's

HOW DARE THEY DESTROY DOCTOR WHO!!!!!!.

They didn't have a choice as the BBC Television Studios had a fire decades ago, and roughly half of their master copies were lost in it. Wasn't just Doctor Who, but other programmes such as Red Dwarf were also lost in the fires.

Theta Sigma

Rogue9a
08-19-2008, 07:11 AM
your coming up on what I thought was the best episodes of the season.

the fire did play a large role, but they also erased a good deal of the masters since they had no concept that they could release them first as VHS Tapes and then DVD's

Lord Brimstone
08-19-2008, 07:52 AM
Yeah, quite a few of the older serials of the 1st to I believe the 4th Doctor are incomplete due to whole episodes being lost. They are doing what they can to restore them. actually one of the more interesting ways they are doing this is with the audio dramas. You see while VHS wasn't even a thought back then and thus there was hardly any copies of the master film, Records were around and with the audio Dramas being popular, that actually saved the audio recordings of the actor and actresses from the actual recorded episodes.

So what one group is doing is taking the audio recordings and then adding animation to it. It's an interesting idea and I would like to see the results. BTW some old who trivia for you: my name is actually based off of one of The Master's many guises. Name the episode if you can.

They've got that from the official email that subscribers were sent a few days back, which did confirm a Torchwood eske pre-release download. So no need to worry, 320kbps downloads will be available in the next few weeks.

I've pre-ordered the CD personally, got the last 2 so gonna add to the collection haha. Also pre-ordered the Merlin soundtrack as I think that's just as good.

The doctor has a daughter? Was this revelation made before?

Yes, in the first episode of series one of the Original Doctor Who, where we are introduced to Susan, The Doctor's grand-daughter. This means he had to have a daughter in order to have a grand-daughter.

The Episode "The Doctor's daughter" on the other hand, is about a female clone that is made from some of the Doctor's DNA and other genetic material [made without his permission of course.]

I had to change my vote after watching a lot of his Episodes you can now download on the 360.

Nope this was truly the best doctor !!

Jon Pertwee played the Third Doctor Who from 1970 to 1974. He was 50 years old when he begun playing the role. He was born July 7th, 1919 and died in his sleep May 20th 1996 at the age of 76 in his New York hotel room while attending a Doctor Who convention. His Doctor Who episodes were the first to be produced in color, and the only Doctor from that era to have the least number of episodes missing. The majority of his adventures were Earth-bound, as the TimeLords were punishing him for stealing the TARDIS in an earlier incarnation. His turn at the Series gave us major villians still used today, such as "The Master" and "The Sontarans", and one of the fan's most favorite companions, Sarah Jane Smith, and also took U.N.I.T. well beyond two guest-appearances from the Patrick Troughton days.

MP3 would probably be more compatible with most computers software... not everyone likes using iTunes for some reason. I'd be fine with both, but MP3 would be better for everyone if you're willing to do so please. :)

I really like the look of the new Doctor... reminds me of an eccentric character, somewhat Paul McGann like.

And the photoshoot he's done with the TARDIS proves that it's going to be a much darker and scarier product, which I was hoping for really!

Kinda got sick of David constantly going "I'm sorry... I'm so so sorry" every time someone pulled their bottom lip out haha!

No overall I'm looking forward to Spring 2010, time for a revamp anyway!

Do not know if its only in USA but all the old Dr Who's are no on the Netflix that is part the 360' menu. Works great and for 9 bucks a month you can just watch them a lot easier then downloads.

Btw I was surprised to find out there is a large portion of the episodes totally missing from the series. I have seen a few that they reconstructed from TV shows that people had taped recorded with animation done over the top. Totally amazed me to hear that they might be gone forever.

In 2001 there was a fire in the BBC Television Centre that managed to destroy several archives of television programmes. Some of which obviously being Doctor Who.

The Beeb have since asked fans of programmes to send in copes they may have taped on VHS to help back up a list of lost series, but the Doctor Who lost episodes were before this type of VHS backup were possible. And so animators have since made it an effort to use still exsisting audio tapes to create animated replicas of the episodes.

Here being an example of this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qMAhFZ2blYA

Also the BBC are starting to digitally restore a lot of the B&W classic series, and bring them to their full colour glory. But there'll be some time before that kind of content became public I'd think.

The lost episode had nothing to do with the fire but seems copies where just sent out and no originals kept. A lot of the series has been redone on DVD and I have seen many of them. They are not btw amateurs doing the restored animated episodes, but have been working with BBC using the some actually soundtracks and some home tape recordings. (http://www.restoration-team.co.uk) There is a great mini show on the 2nd DVD of the Invasion explaining the process with some the people who even turned in the cassettes they made with a mic pressed up to the TV.

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/protectedimage.php?image=JamesGray/Doctor_Who_The_Invasion.jpg_30032007&width=140

Released:
6th November 2006

The release of The Invasion onto DVD heralded the first time an incomplete story had been released on its own. When the story was originally released onto VHS, Nicholas Courtney was drafted in to briefly fill in the blanks left by the two missing episodes, but this time around something far more ambitious was in order, with Cosgrove Hall, who had earlier collaborated with the BBC on the webcast Scream of the Shalka, being called in to produce animated versions of Episodes One and Four, using their still surviving soundtracks.

Well my facts are still accurate, episodes were destroyed in the fire, regardless of what you've seen. I was fully aware of who has done the restoration on the episodes and didn't actually say they were amateurs, you have added that in yourself.

And secondly, there's no need really for the small fonted remark at the end, telling me what I can and can't do, as if I took your quote out of context or something. I merely used it as a reference as to why I was posting.

Why can't the BBC put on some of the old Doctor Who , how can you vote for your favorite Doctor when you don't know al his incarnations. I have a TV rip of Patrick Troughton in 'The Dominators' this came from a show called Breakfast With The Baldies from Australia, respect due! As a footnote it is a fact that the missing episodes were taped over because of financial reasons by the BBC, i do not know what damage the fire caused so i can't comment, i have all the Loose Canon reconstructions and all the early BBC dvd's, even remember some from first time round Galifrean greetings to you all!

If you are going to quote, please cite your references.

The Doctor Who missing episodes are the installments of the long-running British science-fiction television programme Doctor Who that have no known film or videotape copies. They were wiped (or "junked") by the BBC during the 1960s and 1970s for economic and space-saving reasons. ~ Doctor Who missing episodes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_missing_episodes)
Other classics were also lost. See: The British TV Missing Episodes Index (http://www.btinternet.com/~m.brown1/eplist.htm)

The BBC is not the only one that destroyed, or is destroying, archives. It was a common practice in the days of expensive storage, no archiving preservatives, when films & tapes were bulky. Disney recently made some acquisitions stipulated with the condition Disney not be responsible for archive preservation. Leaving the fate of back catalogs in doubt. ~cite?

Even with only the soundtrack, The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve (William Hartnell, 1966) was voted one of The Best Doctor Who Stories. The 10 greatest episodes of Doctor Who ever - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/3674193/The-10-greatest-episodes-of-Doctor-Who-ever.html)

Right now, I'm liking Sylvester McCoy. But, there is a Doctor Who for every mood!

It has always, to some extent pandered to its fans and their wants and needs, I dont think it is a bad thing providing it doesn't become mired in its own history, indeed many of the new series production crew and writers are long term dedicated fans of the original series.

Yes Eight travelled with Charley and C'rizz for a while in the audios. The first one was human (and female), the second was a Eutermisan (?) and male. I'm sure he had other non-female alien companions.
Ten travelled with a green looking lady whose name now escapes me in the DWM comics.

But the other Doctors had non-female alien companions too, on television. Turlough wasn't from Earth if I remember correctly, and neither was Adric. And if alien counts for robots then Kamelion and K-9 fit the description too :P

I agree though that it would be a nice thing to repeat!

What we have to do is help each other. And stop with the flaming critiques. Everybody has a bad day. Ignore those posts from people sharing a bad day. Move on and help spread the Doctor Who goodness. Give a hand to the polite, but needy.

RE: bad day/week/month...(time travelers may experience longer down time). Shucks, Doctor Who had some bad regenerations, too. (ie: the War Doctor, ect.).

<hr size=6 color=green>Maybe what we need to start is a new site for flaming Doctor Who. A place where you don't need to be polite. A place where the grumpy can vent, hammer, slam, critique and generally just kiss kick some random butt! ie; dalekshatedoctorwho.com (http://www.dalekshatedoctorwho.com/)

How would an invite work? If here is freely available but the d/l thread is closed except to invites then what happens when you don't invite someone? Here becomes a war zone again. In particular I'm thinking that the so far unjustified "clique" allegation becomes more relevant.

Hew1tt
01-02-2014, 12:44 PM
For myself, a discussion thread is needed first, the d/l thread is a secondary, most of us have a way of receiving d/l at this time... invite only??, who would we want out?

I leave it to Ex Me, for his reply and to others, who drop in with different views, to the group as a whole to determine the end result.... or we can keep the status quo, which is in effect at the moment.

How would an invite work? If here is freely available but the d/l thread is closed except to invites then what happens when you don't invite someone? Here becomes a war zone again. In particular I'm thinking that the so far unjustified "clique" allegation becomes more relevant."unjustified"? There is a clique. There is always a clique. Usually there are many. That's what happened in my schools, workplaces, clubs, ect. That is true here, too.

From time to time, I post a list of wanted rarities. Share some of those, and "they" will find you.

Engaging discussion with the kiddos about the ontological paradox of the FEZ in Day of the Doctor.

The Fez's life goes something like this:
1. Wait around in the vault to be discovered by 11*;
2. Get thrown back to the middle ages to meet 10*;
3. Get tossed, dropped, buried, and recovered centuries later, and placed in the vault;
4. Go back to #1.

The Fez has no beginning.

At every iteration, the fez gets handled and worn a little bit more. Although the doctor goes through a regeneration in-between, the fez has no renewal and just keeps getting more worn.

After a gazillion iterations, the 11th * might not care to pick up the worn out fez anymore, letting it escape the loop...?

---------- Post added at 09:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:42 AM ----------

a gazillion iterations,

Surely the point is that there's only one continuous loop not a gazillion iterations of the same events? Everyone experiences their part in the sequence once only, the fez is removed from the display once, the fez travels back in time, the fez is recovered and placed on display. Each event happens one time and forms a continuous loop of cause and effect. A paradox sure but the fez won't wear out because it didn't.

Each event happens one time and forms a continuous loop of cause and effect. A paradox sure but the fez won't wear out because it didn't.

I want to agree, but that's the paradox. If MS so much as frays the hem in putting on the fez (does a fez even have a hem?), there is no point in its subsequent history when that hem gets unfrayed. Being continuous, the cycle has no identifiable reset point at which such a [worn -> new] jump might occur.

Are you suggesting that because the fez is caught in a repeating time loop, it is impervious to physical change?

BTW - Do not mistake my timey wimey confusion for any kind of authoritative argumentation. I only understand this well enough to keep the kiddos thinking. :-)

It's an interesting point. From everyone's perspective each event occurs once but I suppose, were the fez sentient, from it's point of view it goes repeatedly through the loop. However within that viewpoint each action occurs in exactly the same fashion each time ie the fez never gets frayed and never ages since it wasn't frayed and aged the one time that everybody but the fez experienced the event. From this we must conclude that, within the temporal loop, time does not progress endlessly but must reset each time through.
