So I keep hearing this supposedly mock-worthy rumor that's probably long died out by now and has probably developed into a joke, where people claim Aeris is "the wolf". I'm not saying I believe it, just asking what is this "wolf" in question? I don't remember a wolf in the game or in AC.

That stupid speculation is from the movie. Aeris is NOT the wolf.

A wolf appears in many scenes, such as Cloud and Tifa passed out, by the old Buster Sword marking Zack's death site and at the Forgotten City for a brief moment.

Indeed it does appear there but its hardly just a random thing they threw in without any meaning.

A wolf shows up at various points in Advent Children. For some reason, a lot of people first thought the wolf represented Aerith. So it became a big joke. However the wolf does not represent Aerith as she is there to represent herself. It does not represent Zack either, which is what people moved onto once they decided the wolf did not represent Aerith. The wolf in fact represents Cloud's guilt about the past and the present. It shows up whenever he is feeling guilty and places where he has felt guilt. It finally vanishes when Cloud comes to accept that not everything was his fault.
