Help!

I've decided to give the FF series a shot. But, I need your guys' expert opinions on which FF I should play first. I have most of the PSX titles right now. So please vote on which one you think I should play first. And if you want, give a short explanation on why you think it's the best choice.

Thanks.

Yeah, it doesnt make a difference really. Every FF is completly different and if you're the kind of person who likes graphics to be nice its probably best you start at the begining as they get better as you go along.

Yeah. I see. But I only have Tactics and 5-9 right now. So it's kind of impossible for me play the first four, unless I buy a Wii.

Tactics FTW. Though that is a turn based strategy and is quite different from the main series, so take that into account. I recommend playing the older ones first so you don't get spoiled by the newer pretty graphics. Replaying VII was burning my eyeballs out of their sockets. I don't now how I put up with those blocky bodies before.

VI, IX, and Tactics are all really good, so you can't go wrong with any of them. V is pretty nice, too, if you're into the whole job system thing.

Play X first. Then it won't seem like such a disappointment.

I'm serious.

Not only that, when you play the PS1 titles, and the classics, they're gonna seem great. I'm not joking. Go backwards.

That was my experience at least... I still love X, but if I hadn't started with it, I probably would have hated it.

:holdit:

Do you mean a DS? So you can play the GBA ports of I, II, and IV, as well as the remake of III? I-IV aren't on the virtual console.

Just trying to clarify. Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking.

From this poll, I would say VI, but you really should start with IV. You have almost a 1,000 posts here, and have never played FF?

He has probably played them for a few minutes and then just puts it away,
kinda like what i did to FFXII, I bought on release date and only played it
a few hours and put it away...

Man, I hardly ever play a game the day I buy it :o

I mean, seriously, it's usually months before I get around to it. Sometimes it is shorter. Like, say with PW and PKMN~

I would agree, Asamiya you should go back to XII it is great fun

On topic though I would start with either VI or IX. V is a lot of fun but can be at times unfairly hard and as great as Tactics is it is not really representative of how Final Fantasy games usually are.

Ok ill give it a try,

start with final fantasy 3.

that is my humble opinion.
sure, 6 and 7 are awesome, but the simplicity of 3 is good for begginers.

Depends which 3 you're talking about. Original 2-D, or the remade one for DS?

Because the original sucks ass.

Can you get VII or X for Computer?
I wanna try them, as they seem the only *puts on fire-jacket* good ones.
I have III for the DS, and although somewhat fun, not to deep a story, and extremely repetitive.

pretty sure the original is extinct, so obviously im talking about 3 for ds.
the minimal complexity of the game and story is ideal for begginers.
this doesnt mean you will not get you ass handed down to you in a silver plate at the final stage several times.

the only final 3 available outside japan is final fantasy 3 for the ds.

Unless he gets the ROM. There is a fan-translated version.

doomjockey
06-14-2008, 08:58 AM
Forget the NES titles unless you have a DS because otherwise, you're in for headache. Yeah, FF was great for it's time, but the key words there are those three before the comma. I'd go with Zak's advice and start with something up-to-date. Probably FFIX since it combines decent 3D and classic FF gameplay.

Usually I'd recommend my favourite, FFVI, but a lot of people take issue with the dated graphics which isn't too horrible a sin I guess; the game is 14 years old.

COUNTLESS fan translations.
but in a legal way (in english) only the DS version have ever seen light outside japan.

and again, its complexity is good for beginners

i dare you to reach the last castle and say that again.
thats the reason why i said "that does not mean you wont get your ass handed down to you in the final parts of the game".

because you WILL get your ass handed down to you, in a silver plate, and in the cheeks there be engraved: i told you.

I'd say VI, V is a bit more complex and difficult gameplay wise, and VI is a good introduction, not to mention my favourite FF. I'd recommend play VI-IX, then V, then X onwards. V is out of place because it's more fun to play once you're used to FF, imho.

So I started playing VI a few days ago. Iam very impressed with this game. Not only were the graphics very good for it's time (the way the screen changes into battle mode is freaking cool as hell!), but the story is is good as well, and easy to follow. The music is fantastic (really love the world exploration theme). The battle system is simple and fun. And I love riding around on those giant bird-like creatures (forgot what they're called). It's turning out to be a great game so far. Might even qualify to be one of my favorite RPGs soon.

If you're going to get an emulator and a ROM stick to the fucking original.

Simple solution:

Read up on all of them and start with the one that most interests you.

You are not going to get any objectives opinions from anyone here, so take the time to do your own research into the games and go from there. Ultimately, that should prove far more rewarding then going on the words of some of the cretins around here.

Not really. I used to have it for my NES years ago. And it didn't appeal to me at all. lol

@ Harkus: It's been two days since I last saved. Right now, I'm at the first (are there more than one?) path choice screens where you can catch up on how the other characters are doing on their mission. I going to put in some more time later on tonight. I think I'm going to choose Loche.
